TOS Version 3 test PBEM

The other big problem on the allied side was the failure to tear up the
roads, esp. in Malaya and Borneo. I tore up a lot of them myself, but
the British and the Dutch refused to do it. By the time Misfit got around
to attacking those places, none of the cities should have been
connected to each other by road.

I don't know that this was a big one. I had transports stacked up in IndoChina to do a massive drop of troops next to Singapore, but as it turned out the lack of road / rail damage made it unnecessary.

The march thru Indonesia was predominately done with marines and transports (except for Sangkoelirang which I did use regular land troops).

I'd like to give myself a little credit for good positioning of air units to capitalize on my lightening advance. It created a lot of ship sinking opportunities.

The other points you made are quite valid. (I did go out of my way to kill any guerilla I could get to, to deprive you of picking off my weakened units).

I guess it's arguable if you consider the bomber the attacker / the fighter the
defender (of the airspace), or the bomber the defender against an attacking
fighter.

I noticed in TOS v3.0 that my fighter bombers (on bombing missions) consistently shot down opposing Wildcats and Fighter Bombers.

Can you quantify the number of aerial battles with fighter bombers? If the
sample is large enough, and your fighter bombers shot down considerably
more fighter bombers than you lost against them on air superiority, then this
would confirm my interpretation (the FB has a=5 and d=4). Furthermore, if
many Wildcats on air superiority lost against your FBs, then I would consider
it unlikely that the FB's defense value of 4 was compared to the Wildcats
attack value of 4.

I'm sorry to say that I did not keep statistics this game. I will however the next time I play. I do remember that I lost considerably fewer aircraft to interceptors than I shot down.

I noticed that too :(

I didn't keep statistics either but at one point my four carriers were carrying a total of 10 Fighters on A/S (if I recall, 8 Wildcats and 2 Fighter/Bombers) as a sort of trap for the Japanese Bomber Wing but when Misfit sent in his Fighter Bombers first, I ended up loosing more aircraft than he did.

I accept all critiscism for this game ... I have never taken part in a PBEM where such close cooperation was really necessary. Also, as this was only my second look at the Pacific scenario ever (the first being the ODT PBEM) I really didn't know what I was doing.

Now that the carnage is over, I can emerge from my jungle island hideout! Actually, I got back in town a week ago, but between my new job and seeing the Dutch were down to one city, it didn't seem worth it to jump back in and slow things down. Good game, and some great strategy by Misfit, to be sure. I'm sure I could have played the Dutch much better, and I'll agree on the coordination part. Having played in a WWII PBEM at Civ3DuelZone recently (started after this one), as the Commonwealth, I saw how powerful a coordinated campaign can be. Not only coordinating research, but also intel spotting, helping one ally to get the Intel Agency, etc. Of course, as the Dutch, I saw my main purpose to be a speed bump, and did my best at that, but especially in this version, it seems they have even less to work with. The roads issue is debateable, tearing up the roads early cripples my (already small) economy, and could deny me my own resources, when by the time he came to Borneo, he already had sources of everything he needed. I think it's more critical for China, where he is forced to move overland.

Anyway, thanks again for the opportunity to see a more realistic Pacific scenario (even if realism isn't great news for the Dutch!). I won't be able to play a rematch, my new job has me travelling too much, I'm barely keeping up in the PBEMs I'm already in. Good luck, though, and I'll be sure to lurk if you play again!
