“Shapiro’s rhetoric has the potential to threaten the emotional and mental safety of much of the campus community. If you do not feel comfortable around a climate that will be created by Ben Shapiro’s presence, we encourage you to seek a safe environment for yourself,”

Emotional and mental safety? WTH? Inner peace comes from within. Ben Shapiro is a douche but unless you are forced to listen to him how is he threatening anyone.

If I was a conspiracy minded idiot I'd be tempted to think this weird fragility epidemic is a bunch of paid actors to make actual left leaning individuals look ridiculous and weak.

Instead of trying to silence or drown out opponents go debate them.

If this was a nursery school I could understand protecting them for scary ideas but these students are supposed to be adults.

Know your enemy, dont stick your fingers in your ears and say lalala.

I was hoping this was just a phase and still am.

Shapiro is a troll. Trolls stir up trouble. Trouble finds victims, and not necessarily weak victims. Nothing wrong with a warning when the local deplorables want a good whipping up by a big name troll.

The people chanting at him are also trolls. And dumber ones than Shapiro. The whole point of a troll is to make people mad & reactive. Now Shapiro gets to act the victim. How about everyone stop acting the victim? The world will be literally burning & then people will know the true meaning of "unsafe".

So your solution for dealing with political agitators is to not say anything, thus allowing them to dominate the airwaves, until we're all screwed? Forgive me if I don't invite you to any strategy meetings.

I don't even know this Shapiro, but the solution to nutjobs is usually to simply destroy their policies in debates and media appearances. The reason this didn't work with Trump is because he got something like triple the amount of media as everyone else, and the Dems picked the worst possible candidate. Even so, she still got 3 million more votes than the Rapist-in-Chief. This is how Pauline Hanson was banished into deserved obscurity in this country two decades ago, and she only came back because the media landscape changed and they began to actively pursue the **** for ratings.

I do see the point in the OP though. There really does seem to be an epidemic of people being wimps lately. Emphasis on the word "seem." I think you'll find there is very little difference with previous generations, and it is simply advertised more, because "millennials, avocado toast, participation trophies, etc."

No need for paid actors, just report and exaggerate it every time some college kids do or say something stupid and make some annoying behaviour out to be a real problem.
From time to time I would hear and read some stupid pseudowoke nonsense in German universities. 99% of students just ignore these weirdos.

Instead of trying to silence or drown out opponents go debate them.

I don't see any point debating with transparent sophists like Shapiro and the rest of the pseudointellectual dark web. They don't mean to seriously discuss serious issues. It's just baiting, misdirection and projection.
If I had a choice between debating and protesting these dorks I'd just go play video games at home or read a book in the park.

You make it seem like Shapiro wasn't going to act the victim to begin with. That's part of his gig, just like the rest of the alt-right trolls.

Yes, this would be the intellectually honest approach. But what would you do if you couldn't win those debates? Some people would just make up some mental gymnastics about how they can and need to deplatform Ben Shapiro

By "win the debate" do you mean finding a way to keep the right wing troll from repeating the same lie over and over and over? That's the problem with the "just go debate the right wing troll" theory. Their "debate style" is to just keep lying until you want to punch them, then claim that they won. What Shapiro merits is a savaging that the law won't allow, not the respect of pretending his lies are worthy of debate.

Just show it to be a lie, and Shapiro is done. Boom. Not that difficult

That can keep a person from winning an election, as happened with Hanson. It can't keep a troll from trolling, unfortunately. Erick Von Daniken's books still sell, even though he's been discredited literally thousands of times.

Well, I guess that depends on your expected outcome. Did you expect Erik Von Daniken to stop existing? That was never going to happen. But Daniken is a marginal figure, who isn't really taken seriously by the vast majority of people. I see no reason to deplatform someone like that

Sure man. Just like Trump. I mean, showing him to be lying certainly stops him from repeating the lie.

Oh.

Wait.

No, that demonstrably doesn't work.

The alt right has adopted the "when shown to be lying, just lie louder" approach. It isn't about convincing anyone, it's just meant to get attention.

The issue is when such a person is given a platform. I mentioned Hanson for a reason; her political career was destroyed in 1998 after two years, and her repeated attempts at relaunching it were laughed at. She was a punchline. Then television networks in this country grew desperate for ratings, so they deliberately began to air interviews with her, knowing she would be racist, because it increased ratings. People were watching, not just to support her, but to denounce her, and yo cheer on her critics. Suddenly, she had a platform again, and she was able to scrape up just enough support, combined with contingent circumstances, to become more politically successful than ever in 2016.

Idiots shouldn't need to be deplatformed, because they shouldn't be provided with a platform to begin with.

No, calling people out for lying works. I've done it myself. Whenever I see people lying in debates, I just call them out for it. If they try to double down, I put them on the spot, push them even harder on it. Then again, I got the truth on my side so I don't really need to resort deplatforming

Well, I guess this is where you and I disagree. I've never been afraid of ideas. I can defend my views in an open debate. If you can't, do you ever consider that you might be wrong?

Having seen you in operation I know this isn't true. What you do is lie, and when they rephrase you tell the same lie again to "push them harder." Eventually the repeated lies push them into saying how much they would rather not be limited by the medium since that kind of repeated lying in real life would undoubtedly be stopped by the simple expedient of breaking your jaw, and you report them. Effectively, deplatforming them is the direct and obviously intended result of your behavior.

Shapiro came from Breitbarf, which is like an idiot factory.
This is the big problem today. This lunatic fringe websites that run around traditional media. In the one hand, it's great that the traditional monopolies, like the Murdoch Press, can't dominate the airwaves anymore. On the other, it allows the nutters who even Murdoch thought were too far right to thrive.

The big issue, of course, is that the mainstream media gives these idiots platforms to spread their crap, and that draws them more viewers. The mainstream does this because they are desperate for ratings; this is what happened with Hanson. Even with this, the nutters would traditionally have disappeared back into their holes - Hanson will be gone next election cycle - but Trump actually supports the nutters, giving them greater reach than they should ever receive.

I fell down a rabbit hole looking at old threads today, and noticed a guy posting links to InfoWars from about 2014. He was summarily ignore, as I don't think anyone had even heard of that cesspool at that point. Now, everyone has heard of it,even though I doubt even 1% of us have ever read or watched anything from there, except maybe on a comedy show mocking it.

Oh Tim, didn't we already go over this. Your threats of violence are a joke. Both online and offline, but especially online. Besides, unlike you, I don't need to fight to prove I'm right

Mainstream media kinda tanked their own credibility with their own lies. I guess I could give you examples from the Finnish media, but I'm guessing that's obscure enough for you that it's not worth getting into

You have literally been caught telling racist lies in threads here in CFC just today, and when called on them you continued to make them. So you herby disproved your own bullcrap.

And I'm not afraid of ideas. Nice little right wing bait there; I've heard it so many times before. You should invent some new baits on ***** and Gab already. I'm afraid of the sort of scum who spread them, and what lies behind those ideas. Ideas like; race realism, which you promote, which is really just a cover for racism. Ideas like; men's rights, which are really just a cover for the ksitreatement of women. Ideas like; preventing voter fraud, which is really just a cover for voter disenfranchisement, usually of ethnic minorities.
