The sun shines towards a corner of the house, and the house, having no interior walls, allows the sunlight to travel through the 4 windows on first two sides, and out the four windows on the other two sides. (or, the sun rises INSIDE the house)
Stratego & Chieftess: Nice tries, but I did say that the light enters the house through all the windows, not that it merely passes through all the windows. That'd be too easy.
A house in the shape of a pyramid, with the top of, the windows in the four sides. Picture explains
Oh, and the top would have to point to the east, for the morning light to shine in
And the top could also be 'blunted', not a tip, so that the house has a roof.
Zeekater: are you trying to describe a Pyramid which has turned the tip to the east ? Something like a "fallen Pyramid". Ok, well not really fallen as the "below wall" shouldn't be on the ground, so a "fallen Pyramid" perhaps on poles.
Correct, both of you. Stratego's answer was closer to what I was looking for, although Zeekater's works too and he was two minutes quicker, so he wins.
The house is built like a square-based pyramid with the top cut off, built on a steep east-facing slope, as per this lovely diagram, with the thing on the bottom right being an overhead view and the E standing for east:
Halcyon: I see what you mean, but this cannot be the answer. You specifically said "at sunrise". At sunrise the "back" windows aren't receiving any sunlight, as the roof blocks it. Your picture isn't showing the sun at sunrise either. But that's just a remark...
Indeed, it could be possible however if the house was built partially upside down. With this I mean that the foundations of the house lean over (not horizontal: _, not vertical: | but something like: /) That way the roof points down a bit. Another condition would be that the angle at which the first sunbeams reach the different windows of the house is equal for all 8 windows.
Rik: You're quite right. The picture was more to demostrate the general idea than give specifics, which was an error on my part. All that needs to change is the angle of the slope..
Although there are still a lot of good questions being posted, please try to remember that this is a trick quiz, and not a math or logic quiz. Questions that are misleading are strongly encouraged, and ones that seem impossible, but are not are also great. Anything involving long mathematically calculations is strongly discouraged. Please keep this in mind.
Anyway, I agree with the star pattern, but I've been beated toward it.
