I'm one of those people that simply can't tell what people are saying in songs unless I look it up online or if the person has an exceptionally clear singing voice. For example, Satisfaction was one of the only songs I can hear the lyrics too correctly. On the otherhand, I had no idea what Robert Plant was saying in practically all of his songs until I looked it up. I thought the words "Custard Pie" were "justifying".

Once my french teacher tried to make us write down song lyrics from a french song and I would have failed had it been graded.

So can you tell song lyrics immediately?

No, never on "popular" music.

Mind you, opera's equally as difficult.

It depends, if I listen to Slayer, no. If I listen to Iron Maiden, yes :D

Depends on language and type of music. In English, I usually manage to make out the lyrics in the calmer versions of pop and rock. Classical usually works to, but they tend to the "unusually clear voice" faction, so it's perhaps rather that than the music type.

I have terrible problems with lyrics. Sometimes, I get the entire song wrong, so that I think it's about how great his girlfriend is, but it's actually about strangling her and ordering her around instead. Sometimes, I think the lyrics are really profound and a work of poetic genius, but when I find out the real words, it's actually crap. It doesn't help that the music I listen to tends to be flowery and happy and uplifting, but the theme is actually quite macabre and morbid and depressing.

I voted no, once in a Smash Mouth song I thought it said "get yourself a soda pop" but it said "get yourself sold and bought" , whic are very different.

I agree with that, the only time I can understand most of what's being said is in musicals and broadways (which, for the most part, is the only time I like lyrics in songs anyway).

It usually doesn't take me to long to figure out lyrics, normally I can get the chorus and the hook etc pretty easily.

Most stuff I can. But things like early REM are troublesome.

@Mise - You'd like Harry Chapin then. Nice, bouncy tunes, lyrics
that could send the most cheerful person into suicidal depression.

I can understand the majority of a songs lyrics after hearing it a couple times. Remembering them is a different story, or so my friends tell me when I try to sing songs I don't really know. ;)
