True Legacy Nes: Alternative Cold War

Allahuakbar!

People of Afghanistan, we have long been in the background, being used and abused by the Western powers. Now, we put that dark time behind us, to the time when we will be able to rise up with our Muslim brothers throughout the world and shake off these shackles so harshly placed upon us. No longer will we be weak, but we shall rise in brotherhood and in peace.

We do not seek war with the Western powers, but only recognition, that the sons of Mohammed are not to be considered weak! Technology is not our enemy, for Allah himself gave us technology to better us from the animals, so we must embrace technology and develop it!

A new era of Islam is beginning, similar to the golden Age, but it is only possible if we coexist with the Christians, the Jews, the Hindus. And so, Allah is great, Allah is magnificent, and may Allah take us forward!
-Speech by King Mohammed Zahir Shah in Qandahar, April 1950 (I assume that's the starting date of this NES?)

From: Afghanistan

We offer our hand in friendship in the form of a non-aggression pact. Will you accept?

“No, the Emperor isn’t busy. Not with official business, anyway – he has nothing scheduled. I can buzz you in.”

“Domo arigato.”

Yoshi strode into the Emperor’s office, usually – like the rest of this particular building – a monument to Japan’s ultimate succumbing to western influences. Heavy oaken doors and brass knobs gave way to a solemn brown room, lit from new electric lamps – a craze which had long since swept Europe but was rapidly expanding in Japan. Being daytime, however, the lamps were off and the room was liberally shone upon by the gracious face of the sun from windows which were of distinctly Japanese design. Beside the man sitting at the desk, it was the only way anyone could have told that this was in the east.

As for the man, well, he had a shrewd, but regal face. The face of an enlightened monarch, one who knew the best for his people and would stop at nothing to achieve his goals. In front of very tight, analyzing eyes was a pair of eyeglasses: small, circular, lending his eyes a penetrating quality. The last two decades certainly was a test of his leadership, and though some might say Tojo was the primary mover and shaker, it would be a brave and altogether foolish man to say that Hirohito was not the true mastermind. The Meiji dynasty had done more for Japan than any other – some say even more than Tokugawa, and point to the technological advancements as evidence. Whatever the case, Hirohito was a Meiji emperor through and through.

On this occason, however, Hirohito had a look on his face of intense concentration as he carefully moved a brush across the canvas of a large, blank white sheet of paper. One by special one, figures were created on the sheet. Made with long, elegant brush strokes, together they formed a classic Japanese haiku, and upon culmination of the second line Hirohito laid his brush down and looked up to gaze upon the visitor.

“Ah, my son, welcome,” said the Emperor with a trace of a smile.

Immediately Yoshi put his right arm across his chest, fist against his heart, and bowed. “I see you are engaging in the practices of our people.”

“Ah, yes, yes,” said Hirohito noncommittally, head nodding to the left and right, “Now that we have succeeded in demonstrating the Empire’s might, one such as myself can afford to put time aside for things like calligraphy.”

“Indeed, we are truly the envy of the world, father,” remarked Yoshi with a hint of pride.

“Perhaps, but it is not eternal,” cautioned Hirohito, “My son, when you are Emperor you will need to deal with the issue of maintaining the Empire against those who would wish it harm.”

“Yes, father,” said Yoshi deferentially, before quickly changing the subject, “Chinese sabotage reports have been increasing in number. Local officials say the communists are rousing the rabble.”

Hirohito grimaced, looked at his half-finished haiku, and then at the ornate electric lamp on the ceiling – off, but a work of art all the same. With a sigh, he said “And yet, this is only the beginning. No matter what we do these radical malcontents will attempt to undermine the prosperity and the protection of the Empire.”

The Emperor looked back to Yoshi. “General, you know what to do. Root out these resistance cells, and we shall continue to demonstrate the glory that is the East Asian Co-Prosperity Sphere.”

“Yes, father. I shall bring honor to our name.”

“See to it that you do.” With that, Hirohito rolled up his haiku and began taking a few forms out of a drawer. No, thought Yoshi, there was no time to relax. Not yet.

"Greetings my people! I would like to thank you all for electing me to task of governing our nation! The road shall not be easy, and is filled with rocks and potholes, bu we cannot dispair! We live in a time when a few men rule the world. Few places in the world live where freedom reigns, and live without fear of waking up the next day. Just look to our neighbours, Socialist dicators, Facist Dictators and Military dictators. We are a bastion of democracy in a world of dicatorship! It is our solemn duty to preserve our great nation, and those like it! In fact, if we ever recive a chance to help liberate these people, we should carefully considerate, espically when there is little risk to our own selves. It is our duty, to help the world recover from it's current state of Tyranny and help return it to the will of the people! And we, the Brazilians can help! Each and every one of us have a part in the Brazilian in the machine. Our factory workers and businessmen are the cogs, gears and levers moving and working the machine. Military forces are the casing, protecting the machine. Our farmers are the oil and lubricate that stop our machine from rusting with hungar. Finally police, the fire department, our hospitals and doctors, and the Government are the screws and nails holding everything together, for the whole is more than the sum of it's parts. *Dramatic Pause* and you people have given me perhaps the most important job. I'm the switches and the wheel, guiding the Brazilian vechicle of democrazy, and I'm determined to lead that vechicle forward, delivering peace and justice whereever it may take hold!"

President Janio Quadros steps down from the podium. Behind him the cheering from the masses of Brazilians assembled before the presidents inauguration (OOC: They do call it that in Brazil right?) revibrates throguhout the building. As the president enters the Brazilian parliment building, two of his aids, and the Vice President Pedro Calacre join him.

"Not bad eh?" Janio mutters to his companians.

"Sure got them riled up. But really, do you think these people, or even the nation as a whole will see much chance for liberating?"

"Of course. When I leave office I plan to leave a few less dicators behind and a few more free people."

To Democratic Republic of Venezuela, Nationalist Republic of Greater Peru,
Republic of Chile, The Most Serene Republic of Argentina, Whatever the power is in Columbia:

We, the republic of Brazil would strongly suggest that you consider replacing your governments with something more people friendly.

To United States of America, Canada: We live in hard times. Democracy is at a premium, and we are some lucky few who freely partake in it. Every live we can free from some of these dicatorships is a potential life saved. While we would obviously get little benifit in declaring war on Dicatorships at large, a few more democtatic governments may be a boon to society as a whole. Just a thought.

Edit: Another question. How are nations like Canada and the Carribian Islands supposed to keep any level of stability and remain economically able to accomplish stuff?

Terminate your alliance with the Chinese communists and you can have it. Although we might be willing to see our way clear to a pact if you would be willing to arbitrate on behalf of the Chinese.

To: Brazil

Taking an aggressive stand against despotic powers is not the best way to deal with them- our nation is still suffering the aftereffects of the last war.

Welcome to all who have joined :)

I will take Communist China.

Excellent, now some one takes Britain and the last of the major powers will be filled :)

We would be interested in signing a pact of non-aggression to be renewed every five years if the following concessions can be made:

1. All shipping to and from the People's Republic of China and the Federated Soviet Socialist Republics which breach Japanese sea lanes or approach within ten nautical miles of ten nautical miles of Japanese, Siamese, or Manchurian ports shall be subject to search by vessels of the Japanese Imperial Navy for illegal or weapons contraband which demonstrates an intent to smuggle weapons into and arm rebels within the Empire.

2. In the event that any aforementioned contraband is found (the exact specifications of which are open to the interpretation of the captain of the seizing vessel), the Empire of Japan retains the right to confiscate or liberate any or all contraband of such nature, and/or escort the illiberate vessel to the nearest Imperial port to negotiate possible imprisonment and/or execution for crimes committed against the Empire.

3. Japan retains the right to police the territory of the Empire to whatever ends she sees fit and to arrest, try, and execute any foreign nationals of Chinese Communist or Soviet origin who are accused of fomenting lawlessness, rebellion, and general civil disorder in the territory of the Empire.

4. Soviet or Chinese citizens thus imprisoned and/or executed have the right to an appeal which will be upheld on our code of honor whereby a representative from the People's Republic of China or the Federated Soviet Socialist Republics may sojourn to the Empire to act as a character witness or vouch for innocence on behalf of the accused. If an appeal is not carried out in thirty days it will be rendered null and void and all future possibilities of an appeal will be suspended.

In exchange we shall sign a non-aggression pact the exact specifications of which are:

The undersigned agree to the above stipulations, as well as promise not to engage in hostile or peace-threatening acts or talks with or against the other, including but not limited to unlawful interdiction of seafaring vessels of either or all nations involved, unlawful seizure of assets belonging to or of the property of citizens or public of either or all nations involved, unlawful invasion and seizure of territory belonging to either or all nations involved, and unlawful suspension of the rights of foreign nationals as determined by international law; the undersigned also agree that the above stipulations be treated as and considered to be statutes of international law.

Signed

Emperor Hirohito of Japan

OOC: Hitlerslegacy I cannot find Manchuria or Mongolia in the stats. In keeping with history, Mongolia should be a Soviet vassal, and Manchuria should be a Japanese vassal.

From Third Reich of Germany
To Italian Empire

We wish to maintain the friendship that led us to success in the Great War. Germany would like to make a treaty to maintain peace between our blocks. This peace would be defined as maintaining current borders, respecting the airspace, and territorial waters of the nations in each pact. The Fuhrer waits for a positive reply.
