Trump In Charge: Wrecking Ball

Yes, espionage is often the reason used for this sorta stuff. Feeling vulnerable to such things is kind of an expression of that declining power and confidence.
Do you think that the CCP would use TikTok to gather data on some of its 170 or so million USians?

I don't think a society still at the height of its power and confidence would worry so much about it

Trump announced the launch of his meme coin, $TRUMP, in a Truth Social post late Friday, saying the cryptocurrency is celebrating “WINNING” the presidential election and his upcoming inauguration.

The price of $TRUMP has risen by more than 300% to just below $29 as of 10:15 a.m. EST Saturday, reaching a market cap of $5.81 billion, according to CoinMarketCap.

Solana, a cryptocurrency and blockchain platform, developed the meme coin and has limited the supply of $TRUMP to 200 million coins at launch before expanding the overall supply to 1 billion over the next three years, according to the coin’s website.

The remaining 80% of tokens that have yet to be publicly released are owned by the Trump Organization affiliate CIC Digital LLC and Fight Fight Fight LLC, a company formed in Delaware on Jan. 7, according to state filings, and both companies will receive an undisclosed amount of revenue derived from trading activity.

The token’s website includes a disclaimer noting $TRUMP is “not intended to be, or the subject of” an investment opportunity nor a security of any type, and is “not political and has nothing to do with” any political campaign, political office or government agency.

At times like these it's hard to believe how far the normal has shifted. A few presidents ago a stunt like this would end up in disgrace, investigations, impeachment, etc. Today, news of this sort don't seem strange, they seem fitting. You get exactly what you voted for - Trump working hard to make USA "the crypto capital of the planet". As promised.

I guess all forms of fascism have ended up as shabby, tacky forms of scam and pillage in the end
Maybe there is some overuse of a now boring word.

The law-governed republic has been gone for a little while now. It failed to deal with the aftermath of the attempted coup in 2020-21.

Stuff like the Secret Service being able erase all of their texts and it doesn't end in a mass replacement of leadership at the agency. Or the wife of a supreme court justice being involved in the plot to overthrow an election and that justice doesn't even have to conflict out of the hearings on it. It's already failed, it failed even before the guy who attempted the coup got criminal immunity and was allowed another go at running things.

So now it's now just a matter of how things unfold in whatever model of flawed or hybrid regime ends up developing.

Maybe the real reason is the use of such platforms to promote damaging propaganda. Like Facebook was used to promote propaganda from Russia. But Meta is an American company, so there are profits to be reaped. Not so with Bytedance.

He invited people from European far right parties like AFD (Tino Chrupalla) and Reconquête (Zemmour) to the inauguration instead of any normal leaders or even Le Pen, amid a slew of other far right figures. They're not being subtle about their allegiances here this time around.

The outright banning of a hugely popular medium because it's based in a non western country seems like a pretty telling moment in the decline of western power and really, the confidence of western liberal democratic worldviews lol.
And the reason it makes you laugh is...?

Because America's descent into fascism was obvious years ago, even more so if you are a member of a historically marginalized minority

Republicans want the non existence of trans people to ne a thing and there's no way of making that a reality without delving deep into fascism

To be fair the people from Reconquête had to call in every favor to be at the inauguration, when Le Pen's people didn't really bother (Trump is super toxic here).

President Biden has been busy the last 4 days!

He said Friday we have a 28th Amendment to the Constitution now.

On Friday, Biden said he believed the ERA had cleared the hurdle to be added to the Constitution as its 28th Amendment when Virginia ratified it five years ago. He did not explain why he waited until the waning days of his presidency to take action — though he said he had consulted "dozens of constitutional scholars" as he weighed his decision.

"The Equal Rights Amendment is the law of the land — now!" he said in a speech to the U.S. Conference of Mayors. "It's the 28th Amendment to the Constitution — now."

Also on Friday, he commuted the sentences of 2500 people.
Not as good for them as a pardon, but their time in prison will be over.

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Joe Biden announced Friday that he was commuting the sentences of almost 2,500 people convicted of nonviolent drug offenses, using his final days in office on a flurry of clemency actions meant to nullify prison terms he deemed too harsh.

The recent round of clemency gives Biden the presidential record for most individual pardons and commutations issued. The Democrat said he is seeking to undo “disproportionately long sentences compared to the sentences they would receive today under current law, policy, and practice.”

President Biden declined to enforce the law banning Tiktok on Sunday for 1 day to leave it for Trump.

He signed it into Law himself last year though? :hmm:

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Joe Biden won’t enforce a ban on the social media app TikTok that is set to take effect a day before he leaves office on Monday, a U.S. official said Thursday, leaving its fate in the hands of President-elect Donald Trump.

Congress last year, in a law signed by Biden, required that TikTok’s China-based parent company ByteDance divest the company by Jan. 19, a day before the presidential inauguration. The official said the outgoing administration was leaving the implementation of the law — and the potential enforcement of the ban — to Trump.

President Biden Monday morning has just pre-emptively pardoned Dr. Anthony Fauci, retired General Mark Milley, and the Jan. 6th Congressional Committee

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Joe Biden on Monday pardoned Dr. Anthony Fauci, retired Gen. Mark Milley and members of the House committee that investigated the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol, in an extraordinary use of the powers of the presidency in his final hours to guard against potential “revenge” by the incoming Trump administration.

The decision by Biden comes after Donald Trump warned of an enemies list filled with those who have crossed him politically or sought to hold him accountable for his attempt to overturn his 2020 election loss and his role in the storming of the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021. Trump has selected Cabinet nominees who backed his election lies and who have pledged to punish those involved in efforts to investigate him.

“The issuance of these pardons should not be mistaken as an acknowledgment that any individual engaged in any wrongdoing, nor should acceptance be misconstrued as an admission of guilt for any offense,” Biden said in a statement. “Our nation owes these public servants a debt of gratitude for their tireless commitment to our country.”

It's for any federal crimes they may have, but certainly did not commit. :crazyeye:

The pardons, announced with just hours left in Biden’s presidency, have been the subject of heated debate for months at the highest levels of the White House. It’s customary for a president to grant clemency at the end of his term, but those acts of mercy are usually offered to Americans who have been convicted of crimes. Biden, a Democrat, has used the power in the broadest and most untested way possible: to pardon those who have not even been investigated. The decision lays the groundwork for an even more expansive use of pardons by Trump, a Republican, and future presidents.

:whew:

In the last minutes he had left, President Biden pardoned all his family members who weren't Hunter Biden.

President Joe Biden issued pardons to several close family members Monday in the final minutes of his presidency.

"My family has been subjected to unrelenting attacks and threats, motivated solely by a desire to hurt me -- the worst kind of partisan politics," Biden wrote in a statement. "Unfortunately, I have no reason to believe these attacks will end."

"That is why I am exercising my power under the Constitution to pardon James B. Biden, Sara Jones Biden, Valerie Biden Owens, John T. Owens, and Francis W. Biden," he continued. "The issuance of these pardons should not be mistaken as an acknowledgment that they engaged in any wrongdoing, nor should acceptance be misconstrued as an admission of guilt for any offense."

Are pre-emptive pardons legal?
President Ford pardoned a resigned President Nixon who was never charged with anything. :D

**Edit**
Here is his last prime-time TV address to the nation on Wednesday, Jan. 15th.
