Trump Scandal Thread (Past, Present, and Future)

i certainly hope goes to DC to make speeches in his defense. He could even invite his Proud boys to come help him.

Why is it so hard to accept that Trump is a homegrown problem? It may feel good to pretend that he was foisted on us by Russia, but the reality is that he was foisted on us by the Republican Party, and the Republican Party is infinitely more of a threat to the United States, along every conceivable dimension, than Russia could ever dream of being.
Those two things aren't mutually exclusive.

I'd rather he gets Congressional Republicans to request more time for him to get a new defense team, and the Democrats leverage that into the passage of Biden's Coronavirus relief bill.

In fact, I think Democrats may be able to continue to use Trump as a bargaining chip to get Republicans to cave on anything/everything. Let them keep falling on their swords to pander to their base by protecting Trump. If the party truly has completely evolved into a personality cult around Trump, then the Democrats could theoretically take advantage of that for as long as Congressional Republicans want to be controlled by it.

Trump did not sack his lawyers about an argument about the legal approach, it was that he would not pay them enough:

Despite having raised over $170m from his supporters that could be used for legal costs, former President Donald Trump has lost his impeachment defence team after bickering over fees.
In a number of strained phone calls, Mr Trump and his top attorney Butch Bowers haggled over fees. Mr Trump, who has a history of being close-fisted and avoiding settling his debts, was "delighted" at first when he agreed with Mr Bowers that he would be paid $250,000, according to Axios.
But Mr Trump wasn't aware that Mr Bowers hadn't included other expenses in that sum such as other lawyers, research and further legal fees.
Mr Trump was reportedly furious when Mr Bowers suggested a total sum of $3m. After another call, Mr Trump got him down to $1m.
The entire interaction angered Mr Trump and his team as they think that the trial will be pretty simple, as 45 Republicans have already voted for a resolution that stated that an impeachment trial of a former president is unconstitutional.

How unsurprising.

Is he only now just finding out that lawyers expect to be paid?

Such great news!

I expect that is the first of many that we'll see.

Seems a bit quiet without Trump.

Peaceful even.

Think I'm drunk hi CFC.

This Defense lawyer speaking now in the Impeachment trial is rambling his ass off. I have no idea what the eff he is talking about. He went on for like 10 minutes about how great and "gallant" US Senators are... WTH is he talking about?? He originally quoted someone as saying "gallant men", but then corrected himself by complaining, quote "I guess its a sign of the times that I have to say gallant women" ... "A sign of the times"? Is this guy joking me or what? :dubious:

He also went onto a tangent about Free Speech, where he said, among other ramblings... that he was disappointed that a member of Congress had to "walk back her comments", essentially because he felt that people should be able to say anything they want without ever having to apologize for it... but he then stated that he couldn't remember what their comment actually was that she was walking back... seriously, my guy?:dubious: Why didn't you write it down?? But the best part was that he then said that if a Democratic Member of Congress wanted to say that certain Republicans shouldn't have what they want to say heard, that this would be OK because that's the point of Free Speech... Huh???

Then he claimed that you know that Free Speech is the most important of our liberties because its the very first thing mentioned in the Bill of Rights... immediately after the phrase... "Congress shall make no law". Of course that is absolutely incorrect. The Bill of Rights opens with the phrase, "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof"

Now he's arguing that if Trump is convicted then Eric Holder may be next  OMG what is this guy talking about??

This guy is awful.

Also... he claimed that ancient Greece had a Senate, like ancient Rome. Again... no idea why he decided to ramble about Greece and Rome :shake:... but since I'm thinking about it. I'd actually never heard that ancient Greece had a Senate. @Kyriakos is that true?

EDIT: He just said, quote... "We on the Defense had to just now change what we were going to say because frankly, the House Impeachment Managers did a very good job presenting their case. We have responses to everything they said, but we will have to get to those later." *facepalm* So is he saying essentially that he was totally unprepared for the Democrats to present their case well, and that as a result he abandoned his prepared remarks and had to wing it in response... or he is saying that he is sticking with his prepared remarks, but he apologizes that his remarks did not anticipate or address any of the well made arguments of the Democrats?

The news just said "They have 16 hours, and only got the job a week ago. What are they going to fill the time with?"

This next Defense Lawyer (Schoen) is much better than the first. His speech is much more coherent. But its just a bunch of projection of everything that Trump and Republicans already did onto the Democrats. That and the trusty old slippery slope argument.

Oh I forgot to mention... the first Defense lawyer (Castor) explicitly stated that the remedy against Trump was not impeachment, but instead being arrested and charged by the Justice Department. So... should the D.C. police just charge him, issue a warrant for his arrest and call down to Florida for his immediate extradition? Apparently so.

Even ancient Athens didn't have a senate, but they did have a boule, which was an assembly of citizens (so all free men of a certain age) who got together to decide the various workings of the city.

Trump's defence lawyer is arguing that he be arrested and charged?? Are they all smoking something?
