UK apologises to Turing

There's a statue in Manchester.

Too little, too late.

Given all that Turing did for the war effort, most significantly Enigma, and given how absolutely abominably he was treated by his own gvt, I think something a little more than "we're sorry" is in order. You say 'sorry' when you spill a drink on someone. Giving a man breasts, castrating him, and driving him to suicide as reward for saving your country? That needs a little more.

I would like to see something permanent in England have his name attached. A monument, a building, a park, something. A posthumous knighthood is crap. People are alive and England is free in part from Turing's work. Surely somebody can dredge up a little more gratitude and find something to name after him, no?

you guys see this? typical homosexual behavior, you give them something , and its not enough. and you wonder why people hate you:rolleyes:

So you wouldn't mind if someone desecrated your grave and destroyed your reputation?

Not if it happened when I was dead. I couldn't care less about what happens after that.

They just asked to be treated like humans. Is that so hard?

I'll take you up on that offer then. :)

Are they going to apologize, directly from the PM, to everyone else ever convicted under this law?

:goodjob:

though they should extend the apology to all gays who were mistreated under the law like Turing.

You can say that they did. As usual the op failed to include the relevant link, so you missed this:

While Turing was dealt with under the law of the time and we can’t put the clock back, his treatment was of course utterly unfair and I am pleased to have the chance to say how deeply sorry I and we all are for what happened to him. Alan and the many thousands of other gay men who were convicted as he was convicted under homophobic laws were treated terribly. Over the years millions more lived in fear of conviction.
[...]
bit of self-promotion by Brown...
[...]
But even more than that, Alan deserves recognition for his contribution to humankind. [...]
So on behalf of the British government, and all those who live freely thanks to Alan’s work I am very proud to say: we’re sorry, you deserved so much better.

even though that "you" in the actual apology does seem singular...

2nd person singular: you
2nd person plural: you

There must be something wrong with you English. You see, he is saying that Alan Turing should be given a landmark in his name because he was a war hero. Not because he was gay.

You are sooooo trolling....

I support British reoccupation of Egypt again.

Now I'm trolling!
Its so easy...

Is Hossam Egyptian? I thought he was American.

Alan and the many thousands of other gay men who were convicted as he was convicted under homophobic laws were treated terribly. Over the years millions more lived in fear of conviction.

That's also good to know. (The fact that the guy included others in his apology)

EDIT

Thanks Bill!

Hey, it´s not gay if the balls don't touch. Right?

You're thinking of snooker.

Are they going to apologize, directly from the PM, to everyone else ever convicted under this law?

No, but they should. As it stands apologising to just one long-dead man makes it sound like 'we're sorry we did such barbaric things to a man of such great importance' rather than 'we're sorry we did such barbaric things'.

The thing is an apology is meaningless. The victims are long dead and so are the perpetrators of these crimes. It's like the Pope apologising about the crusades - a pretty daft gesture that is supposed to smooth things over somehow.

I agree.

I will be happy when Gordon Brown apologies for his own mistakes.

It is meaningless for him to apologise for other peoples' mistakes.
