Unit Previews: Pikemen

Maybe you could make a short and a tall version, so we would have both a dwarf and a viking?

As you might have guessed; if you make a viking with horns on his helmet I'll jump up and down on your grave and sing silly songs, m'kay?
If this means I have to put you in that grave in the first place, so be it...

As anyone who has been in these forums for so long (that has been seeing mrtn's posts before), you can tell that he cannot give a solid base on his threats :p

But I agree, make the horns considerably smaller. And maybe the unit itself could be a bit smaller too. Other than that it looks good :)

Vikings did not have helms with horns. That is a common misconception.

The whole red-bearded-beer-drinking-warriors-with-horned-helmets thing originated in a XIXth century Italian opera, IIRC. :)

Anyway, nice model, Dease! And, like TopGun69, I also favour a dwarf and a tall version... This way, we can have both a Dwarf Spearman and a Viking Halbardier. :D

LoL....you have a sense of humor.... :goodjob:

There was an old joke that people online actually resembled their avatars Psychologically speaking....

I am sorry I am NOT a beautiul girl (neither beautiful, nor a girl !). :p

Sorry if it sounds spammy (second page then) but I am tired of being invited out by PMs... lol

Make the dwarf's helmet large and prominent! Who cares? It's a mythical creature...

But leave the horns off the Viking, problem solved... ;)

The only thing I'd suggest is maybe making him just a bit shorter since he's a dwarf. But then again, you'd risk not being able to see as much of the detail.
I dont think I'll make him much shorter, I think the horns make him look quite a bit taller than he really is, and I'll adress the horns in a moment

So, IMO, skip the horns, or at least make them smaller.
I won't ever get rid of the horns :p but I will make them smaller, so that they're no higher than his helmet
I think that the civ colour would be better if it was a bit darker.
I'll make most a bit darker :)
Give him some trousers, for Bob's sake, this is the 21th century, after all! ;) These should probably be civ coloured.
But he's NOT in the 21st century, if anyone else wants to see him with trousers post and I'll make a comparison of it.
I don't like the idea of trousers because I think it would take away his muscley legs and make him more fat than strong
The shadow looks a bit large, why would a stick give a shadow one foot wide?
It's either a rather large fuzzy shadow or a sharp thin shadow, which one would you guys prefer?

that could be done although it would mean taking apart the model, resizing all the parts, and putting him back together. But I like the idea so I'll do it :D
As for the current dwarf, is he small enough? if I go to trouble of making him bigger I may aswell make him smaller if people want it.

Would that be the only change necessary to make him an acceptable viking?

Well, define acceptable... I don't think there's ever been a scandinavian halberdier looking like that, the halberds probably came with german mercenaries, and is a typical late medieval weapon, at which point the viking culture was gone.

BTW, about his size; the "official dwarf height" is 34 pixels. ;)

Attached is a size comparison with Kindred's dwarf worker.
I resized the original render (II) to a large version(I) and a small version(III).
note I didn't render in different sizes, I just made the original larger/smaller so thars where the blurryness is comin from.
also the larger one wasn't resized with a 1:1 ratio, the y axis was increased more than x

which do you prefer?

It's Kindred72's Dwarf Worker, not Kryten's...

Obviously version III fits best. Keeping units at the same proportions helps... If I have a dwarf that is the size of a human, I simply cant use him as a dwarf. Horns are ok, it's a dwarf not a viking after all.

Sorry to say I'm picky even though beggars can't be choosers, but I think the horns are a "must" for the Viking as well. It's what makes the unit look nordic in my eyes...

oops  my mistake ;)
yeah, unless I find that I loose way too much detail at III size I'll use that and use I for the viking version.
Also I (unknowingly) lied about having to take the model apart to resize it, all I have to do is increase/decrease the render size  :duh:

http://www.vikingage.com/vac/horns.html
so it could be 1. historically acurate or 2. hollywood historically acurate.
which one?

Ok... I'd say III is the way to go... But at the same time, I feel like a Dwarf warrior ought to be slightly larger than the worker... so maybe II.... hmmm...

Also, go with historical accuracy rather than hollywood... please...

Besides, Mel Brooks already answered the question about the horned-helmets... it wasn't that the helmets had horns, it was because the Norse people themselves had horns growing out of their heads.

do you guys think he should have trousers or not?
My opinion is that the dwarf wont have any but the viking will (cold climate) But I'm not sure so what's your opinion?

'fess up... how did you manage to do the smooth shadows? I've only ever managed one shade of shadow...

If anything the dwarf guy looks a bit light round the face. It looks like he has massive white saucer eyes.
