Unit Requests: Steampunk

May I suggest that Plotinus' unit be used for Sherlock Holmes?
(or maybe the OP hasn't been updated)
The Victorian Gentleman might come in handy too.
Some possible inspiration for the island's zeppelin tower.

I might be able to do those towers, too. Might take a couple months, but there's plenty of time.

So, would you like me to do those towers for the zeppelin or not? :)

Wow, I missed a lot of posts, somehow. I'll try to catch up:

No s**t: Sherlock! (Thanks, I've always wanted to say that in a new context). All of Plot's stunning Steampunk units are already in the biq, I assure you. An update of the first post is in the works; I sent a draft to Blue Monkey, but he's cat-sitting at the moment. As for the Zeppelin Tower, that's a feature of Propeller Island, which Tom2050 is making, I assume. Your time frame of "a couple of months" is a bit further out than we'd hoped; we want to get this out within - lemme see - 49 days, and are actually working furiously here behind the scenes to make that happen. No less than four unit makers have told me of units for this currently in production within this deadline (next month's unit contest should be interesting), and we'll have at least placeholder units for everything we asked for - which is phenomenal, when you think about it - I mean, this isn't any franchise idea, like Star Trek or Warhammer*. We thought of this ourselves - even before** Pixar decided to do "John Carter on Mars"! Given that, the outpouring of community support has been wonderful, and we're gonna have a really interesting mod as a result.

*Mind you, I have nothing against either, in fact the Star Trek mod was the first full mod I ever downloaded.
**I first posted the map in the Steampunk forum on May 8, 2008; Andrew Stanton first revealed that he was writing John Carter for Pixar in June, so we beat them to the start by a month

Speaking of which...

Here's my WIP: A Barsoomian Flyer

I know where you got that diagram; I may have provided the link. I'd have to agree, though, with Blue Monkey's suggestion that you choose a design that has a bit more sailing-ship feel to it. When I read the books, I picture something more like the boat-like designs you've seen - a personal flyer is like a surfboard with a windshield on which the user lays prone; a large ship in the books is described to be more like a flying clipper ship without masts. Mid-sized ships, like the one you sampled, are described in the books as also having boat-like decks. Plenty of action occurs on those decks, in the books:

amm08h6.jpg

As for design ideas, I'd add some more Star Wars designs to Blue Monkey's list of ships that look like (our idea of) Barsoomian vessels:

The Bantha-II Cargo Skiff (from which came the Desert Skiff by pleb )

For Larger ships, something closer to a Star Wars Luxury Sail Barge, a Seltiss II Caravel, or Superhaul Model II Cargo skiff.

I'd also add: feel free to customize/trick out this unit (like Wyrmshadow did with the scrollwork on his Land Ironclad, and Nautilus) You could add extras like ropes and grappling hooks - even Napoleonic-style cannons with radium burst shells are described in the books - so you have alot of license to customize in Victorian, Sci-fi, or Gothic styles to your heart's content. If you want to customize them to specific Barsoomian cultures, versions of these with pirate (black) or egyptian (white) motifs could be used for the Firstborn or Thern cultures, respectively.

I can continue that design, finish it, then do another one. I just don't want to throw it all away....

Propeller Island... some (2) images I conjured up

This image is one that seems to be from the Jules Verne book ? that doesn't seem to be what you are looking for.

So, with propellers in back, dirt runway surrounded by green grass, perhaps the rim of the island will be a dark brassed color? so it still appears to be a ship of sorts. Some steam emitters perhaps on the rear of the island (2), and 1 on each side. With the towers you have shown above placed on one side (similar to the conning tower of aircraft carrier?).

I'll post an image when I get it together... I have been side-tracked with finishing Dejah, while converting a USAF Drone, the Sandworm, and starting a bunch of worker units.

EDIT: I have all the images you already have shown on other pages for reference.

I don't think we're asking you do throw away the design, just add some sails to it.

Maybe something here will inspire some sail-making (ignore the body variations):

Go for it (and please keep in mind the things we've suggested while you do it). I eagerly anticipate your results.

Tom: same for you with the island. Everything you've suggested sounds good to me. That's a beautiful take on Verne's Island, though a bit modern. Ours, don't forget, is a cross between that and the island-fortress described in Verne's Mathias Sandorf, so you, too, can customize all you want. I know you have a lot of projects in progress, and appreciate the time you're putting into this, and Dejah Thoris.

OK, then I don't have to do them towers. :)

I can do those :)
Take your pick.
btw some of those remind me of Jasper Morello's ship.

The [wiki=http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Technology_of_the_Discworld]Discworld technology[/wiki] is quite hilarious but does have some things in common with steampunk fiction (e.g. a wooden, pedal-powered submarine; and Hex, a 'computer' of sorts, to name a few).
Has anyone considered including two of Ankh-Morpork's residents (Bergholt Stuttley Johnson and Leonardo da Quirm)into this?

Discworld is surely more Renaissance Punk, if such a thing exists, isn't it? Everything's done with Renaissance-era technology or earlier. The clacks towers are based on Roman technology. No steam, I'm sure. Although since the implied style of the setting ricochets wildly from mock heroic epic to ancient Greek to film noir to Enlightenment and everything in between, it can only be a matter of time.

I almost have completed the Zepplin Towers modeleding and texturing ;) Here's what they look like right now; I modeled them after the pic BM left above. Still am going to add the circular wiring around the towers. The top walkway portion I still need to add appropriate texture, etc. But at civ scale it probably won't even be noticable so I might just leave it.

I can make the towers closer together, which I will tweak once the island gets done to determine the size they should be.

There's lots of free ships/planes, etc... available on TurboSquid, if any look like something you could use, let me know, and I can probably turn it into a unit.

I can animate objects like those, human models are still a bit difficult to get down.

Nice towers, tom. :)

I don't think it exists, but Ankh-Morpork is Renaissance-Punk. Klatch is Middle Eastern, the Agathean Empire is China/Japan/Korea all mixed up together… you've got Cohen the Barbarian, too. Überwald is completely mediæval with werewolves and vampires… The Alchemists produce quite interesting results. The whole of Discworld varies between everything, just like you said. Have you read Moving Pictures? Early cinema technology… wasn't that nineteenth century?
Surely there's some things that can be extracted…?

I can do those Take your pick.

The Luxury Sail Barge seems to be on everyone's list.

Re: Discworld: One impossible project at a time, guys, please. This one's for 19th century fiction.

I hope you won't mind if I keep that offer in my vest pocket. ;)

Ye-es. That one. I've got the Star Wars. Incredible Cross-sections book… that could help.

I thought that John Carter's adventures were written in the 20th century :shifty:

Gawd, that's a beauty. We could use that ship, but not as a Barsoomian ship. In the books, the airships of Barsoom are described as having neither inflated bags - or for that matter usually, sails (they fly by means of the eighth ray, which has both anti-grav and propulsive properties) - although we have a bit of leeway on that point, since it's our game, after all. The best source I've found for illustrations of Barsoomian ships is >here< on the Erb List. The ship that Polyphemus is making is at the top of that page. Near the bottom are examples of Star Wars ships that were surely based on Barsoomian airships. The consensus seems to be that the clipper-ship types (like the star wars designs) are our favorites.

Our earthbound airships, on the other hand, have an upgrade line that jumps from balloons to embryodead's Airship to Hindenburg-style blimps to Zeppelins to Hikaro's Airships. Since Steampunk is stylistically devoted to airships, a ship like the one you show there would be a fine upgrade from the airship before we get into zeppelins/Blimps - and add a lot of flavor to the mod. I think we ought to take all of those that we could get, or risk expulsion from the Steampunk modders' club for good....

Well I have no plans for it, just have the model somewhere.
