I have the 9400m and it runs ok, not like on the husbands computer but playable. Except in multiplayer, which I assume is another problem (I'm not hosting). The graphics take ages to load and it can be a bit jumpy and sometimes I get red and white checks on some tiles. Single player I haven't had any probs yet. Bit annoying that it's not catered for to be honest, seeing as my computer (MacBook Pro) isn't even 1 yr old yet. And it doesn't actually tell you that the card isn't supported til you've already associated the disc key with your steam account permanently...

I have a Macbook Pro 2.53ghz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4 GB ram, and 9400m video card. Meets all requirements but the video card is unsupported. It can play, but only in strategic view, if I try and put it in normal view it just trials the images for unit flags, and city banners across the screen, and never shows any graphics for the terrain. Sad that I know how beautiful the game looks, and I can only play in Strategic mode. I feel like I should be able to at least play with all the settings turned down all the way. Anyone else having this issue? Any ideas to get it to work?

Absolutely not. Civ requires Snow Leopard (10.6.x), which supports only the Intel chips. PPC users are encouraged to get new hardware.
I still have trouble thinking of something buttonless with a trackpad on top as a gaming mouse.
I had to abandon the old Mighty Mouse because it didn't allow simultaneous left & right clicks, and that was rather important to WoW.
Ah, well, I don't play games, so that's not a factor for me. Even if I played Civ, it doesn't need a complex mouse.
There's a utility you can download for the magic mouse, called MagicPrefs, that allows you to configure all manner of complex gestures. It looks as if it's possible to make it do a dual left/right click. But I'm sure it's not optimised for fast-action gaming.

I have an old (good) style macbook pro, with 2.5ghz, 4Gt and GeForce 8600. It fills the mininum requirements, but is it enough to play the game on standart map? Anyone with similar set up?

I seem to comfortably meet system requirements but the game is horribly slow. I'm running most graphical settings on medium since for some reason it actually seems to run better than when everything is turned to the lowest settings...wierd.
I can play the game, I'm at around 305 turns at this point on a large map with 6 of the original eight civs left and then the bunch of city states. I continue to play because I love the game, but it actually makes me slightly motion sick when moving across the map. It's soooo choppy. It's absolutely horrible. I really want to play an earth-sized map but shutter at the thought at how bad it will most likely perform. Any suggestions?
I should also note that I'm running the Aspyr version in OSx 10.6 (i think. it's the most up to date one as far as I know)
Additional note: I am currently using a pirated version as I didn't want to pay for a game that wouldn't even freakin run on my computer. I still have plans to buy it should there be a way I actually can comfortably.

My April 2009 quadcore runs the game great. Graphics all the way up, huge maps, no crashes, turns work fine. Steam version, all electronic.

Of course, this computer ran Starcraft 2 fine on Ultra at launch, too, so it's not been subject to the vid driver issues that have plagued Macs lately.

Pretty nasty specs, even for contemporary Macs - looks like I might have to go the Boot Camp route, as I did for Civ 4. It's a shame as I'd rather support Mac development 
I have a year-old iMac with 10.6.8 Snow Leopard on it. It meets all of the minimal requirements listed, however it only has 256 MB of VRAM. Would you recommend that I buy an upgrade before I buy the game?
Also, I was thinking of buying it off Steam, but I then realized that if I bought a hard copy and it didn't work, I could sell it on eBay so that my losses would not be so great.
I'm new to this website and fairly new to Civilization, so I await your responses with open ears.

While the Civ 4 or 5 debate will go on forever, my impression is that Civ 4 is a deeper game, thanks in part to its expansions, but the game mechanics aren't obvious. Civ 5 is easier to get into, but hasn't had the time to be expanded aside from DLC Civs and maps.

Make sure you have at least 4 GB of RAM, and then you should be fine. Probably not max graphics, but good enough. My mid-2007 iMac (begrudgingly) plays the game well enough to be fun.
As mentioned, Steam is the way someone proves they own the game, so the physical copy doesn't get you anywhere. The only reason to need a physical disk is if you have network bandwidth issues and would like to try to avoid downloading the entire game. Outside of that, GameStop or Amazon could sell boxes with just codes in them and it would be exactly the same.. you still need to type in your code on Steam, and once you've done that and installed the game, you may as well throw the disc away, as it will be completely useless.
Some people disparagingly refer to Civ 5 and "Civ Rev 2.0". By doing this, they're saying that Civ 5 is too "streamlined" or to "simplified". While that is overstating the matter, it is true that Civ IV, after all of its expansions, was an incredibly deep game that Civ 5 can't yet compare to. In gameplay complexity it is probably somewhere near the midpoint between Civ Rev and Civ IV. However, it also offers many new mechanics and a different way to play, and some people (myself included) prefer the new approach.

This is the only part you can upgrade. Nothing user-replaceable in these things, except RAM, which you have enough of.
That said, your performance is far below what I would expect for that laptop. Apple doesn't really help you game on them, but you should be able to get reasonable performance and somewhere around medium settings. You should open a ticket with Aspyr.

Hi, I have the current 2011 11" Macbook Air with 4GB RAM 1333 MHz DDR3, 128GB SSD, and 1.6 core i5 and Intel HD Graphics 3000. How would Civ 5 run (if at all) on this system?
