Upcoming patch info!

And this is where Steam can help or hurt us: Firaxis (or rather their masters at 2K) know exactly how many people are playing Civ V. If those numbers nose-dive after the first few patches, they will have little reason to invest more money, and will just leave the game as it is. Scary thought.

That makes little sense.

The numbers on Steam are the people who already bought the game and are currently playing in online mode. If those numbers go down (on average) in the month following a patch, that means their current client base is not satisfied with the previous patch.

So, you think, that Firaxis would then no longer continue to support it's main product, one that currently has one of the highest attach rates outside of an MMO, because their client base is less satisfied with a recent patch? It would make absolutely zero sense business wise, and is the opposite of their current & previous stance towards their main product.

Be that as it may, they are our fellow human beings and should have been treated better.

The people behind that crappy patch for BtS should have been be able to take some criticism. That's how one shows that one is a grownup. It's not as if anyone suggested they be taken outside and shot.

If Firaxis can survive the disaster that was Civ3, I think it can survive Civ5. The only difference is the publisher (2K has always had financial difficulties, I think) and it is a different market now with less people desiring long, complex games.

Wait. who said civ3 was a disaster?? I spent nearly 600 hours over the previous 8 months on it and wasn't dissapointed at all. (I used to play the vanilla version too 8 years ago but i don't remember much)

It is pretty worrying. 2K Games is on shaky financial grounds at the best of times and obviously forced Firaxis to release the game early.

You are absolutely right about the current PC gaming market. There is a dwindling number of people that want to play long, complex games. This is why I think it is paramount to stand up for what we all love. If Firaxis succeeds with their current product which has been watered down for the mass market then they will have no reason to change. In the future, Civ games will get simpler and simpler. It'll just get worse from now on. :(

Does anyone know what date the patch will be released and whether it WILL fix diplomacy??!

No definite date, but 2K Greg estimated the first real patch would be out this week.

No, from what Jon Shafer alluded to on the quarter to three forums, the fixes for diplomacy are to come at a later date and he thinks we'll enjoy it....... make of that what you will.....

From what i read:
patch with bug fixes will be this week or next week
patch with AI and Diplomacy changes will be before the end of the year

If you get beaten to a wonder you should get some kind of compensation.
Atleast you would feel abit less bad about wasting xx turns.

You get fail gold, I'm pretty sure. Though I don't think there's a message that tells you so. Poor documentation, as usual.

Then I'm glad this decision it's not up to you, cos you clearly have no idea of how to run a successful business, if you think this way.

To leave a game broken and unpatched, specially a game with a massive fan base as Civ series, is to declare suicide. PC game players aren't the dumbest people in the world, you see? We remember, and we remember well.

Besides, if a company starts to fu** up their fan base, the ones who buy the game even with its faults, expecting that they will be corrected, you can no doubt see the piracy rate of future releases improving, for no one will be willing to pay for high-probability broken games.

Again: company suicide.

And in the gaming world it's not enough that the developers dissolve and join other ranks. Today almost every decent review site keep track of who's who, where's everybody and what are they doing. So there's no releasing a crappy game for Fireaxis, be a major failure and just move on to another company to release another game.

It is the game release that was classified as a disaster. When Civ 3 was released it suffered with bugs that cuted out the pleasure of gameplay the same way we are seeing Civ 5 doing. After patches, it became a good game that I also enjoyed.

Let's not get carried away. Civ 5 has many bugs and has balance issues but hardly a disaster. The Fallout release for PC was a disaster - Fallout crashed to Windows upon launching for many people for 6 months after release... That is a perfect example of a disasterous release.
