And this is where Steam can help or hurt us: Firaxis (or rather their masters at 2K) know exactly how many people are playing Civ V. If those numbers nose-dive after the first few patches, they will have little reason to invest more money, and will just leave the game as it is. Scary thought.
That makes little sense.
The numbers on Steam are the people who already bought the game and are currently playing in online mode. If those numbers go down (on average) in the month following a patch, that means their current client base is not satisfied with the previous patch.
So, you think, that Firaxis would then no longer continue to support it's main product, one that currently has one of the highest attach rates outside of an MMO, because their client base is less satisfied with a recent patch? It would make absolutely zero sense business wise, and is the opposite of their current & previous stance towards their main product.
