I was just wondering what the average American Civfanatics tax bill looked like. I don't mean your refund, but what the government got to keep last year. I realize it's a little personal, so you don't have to post what it is, just do the poll.

I just finished filing. It sucked, because I moved last year and I had to do 2 states. Oh yeah, don't include what you paid in state income tax.

I have no idea what my parents paid. I think they are in one of those unfair middle class brackets that is a real killer.

Wait...what tax bracket isn't a killer? :p

Um let me get out my W2's and other tax records............oh wait not worth the hassle.

I paid over $10,000. I have benefited from the prosperity of our society so I have no problem paying a bit extra. This poll is slanted towards teenagers with part time jobs though, most middle class American adults pay more than $10,000 (unless they are "tipped employees").

I think my Mom said something around the $40000 area, I'm not sure. I know that here in California Income Tax is at 30%

Geez, what's with your parents??? My parents never tell me anything. Even when there was an issue of Time magazine with a quiz about when you can retire, they wouldn't let up.

How about an option "I don't pay taxes yet" or better yet, "I don't have to :mischief: even though I live in a tax nations" ;)

Stile, the answer really depends on how many exemptions you claim. I can claim up to 3, in which case they don't take much taxes out, which means at the end of the year I have to pay a bit; or I can claim 0-1, get paid less per paycheck, and get a lump sum from Uncle Sam in the summer.

I was talking about how Sales Tax is 8% in California so I had to spend around 52 bucks or so for Wind Waker, when I asked my Mom what our income tax was. As for your parents, I wouldn't know ;)

Only 3 states don't have an income tax :D

Seven states have no state income tax: Alaska, Florida, Nevada, South Dakota, Texas, Washington, and Wyoming; two more states have a state income tax for dividend and interest income but not other income: New Hampshire and Tennessee. Many states do have state sales tax, which may or may not be in addition to the state income tax.

http://www.taxadmin.org/fta/rate/ind_inc.html , http://taxes.yahoo.com/statereport.html , or any of several other sites. The second link also shows the state sales tax rate for those states that have a state sales tax.

That's what I do too--why give them an interest-free loan (which if you get a refund, is essentially what you did)? Not like the government is hurting for money....

I paid well under $1,000--made 14K, am single with no dependents, and was able to deduct school-related expenses (I go to a vocational college) and charitable contributions.

Talk about state income tax though--mine amounted to HALF what the federal was (even though you can deduct federal taxes paid before figuring state)--which is VERY high compared to what I remember of Pennsylvania, Virginia, and Maryland.... I hope Pawlenty can hold the line like he said he would....
