v1.16f: Issues? Bugs? This is the thread

Before the patch: War weariness in democracies had a large impact in the game. (IMO this was a good thing.) When at war you had to increase your luxury rate every couple of turns for your cities not to fall into civil disorder.

After patch: When I enter a war as democracy all my cities begin celebrating ´We love the King´-day. They keep celebrating during the entire war. 30 turns later I sign a peace treaty, and the next turn most of my cities suddenly stop celebrating. Just by curiosity I enter a new war and they start celebrating again.

This is not just a single occurance, it happens all the time. I keep the luxury rate at 20%, and my number of lurury resources stay the same.

Conclusion: My citizens are more happy when at war than when in peace. War weariness has become war happines. Quite an odd thing for a democracy...

I installed the patch and now I get an empty city info box, just an empty black outline, three squares South of the normal city info block.

I thought that I had this problem beat but it is back. I have now uninstalled CIV3, defragged, reinstalled CIV3 and then reapplied the patch. I tried the game after the reinstallation but before the patch and there were no problems. After the patch the empty boxes were back.

Some people have said that this problem was present before the patch but it wasn't this way for me. It's not a huge bloody deal but I find it annoying. What now patch the patch?

Hmmm, what kind of empire are you ruling? :D
You start a war 'out of curiosity' and the people celebrate!

hi jeff

first of all, let me say thanks for the help you're providing. i've read an awful lot of complaints and snotty remarks by some of the forum users, and i personally feel that they're getting *way* too worked up about some of these things. i've yet to see *them* create a game as well constructed and entertaining as CivIII. :) yes, there are bugs, but this is complex work, especially when trying to make it run smoothly over several operating systems, dozens (hundreds?) of device drivers, graphics cards, processors and other stuff. keep up the good work.

now, on with *my* problem... ;)

i've been using civIII since the week of its release with no problems (Win2K, Athlon 1GB processor, 256MB RAM, Hercules Prophet II Ultra video, Apple Cinema Display). I downloaded the patch as soon as it was available (that means i downloaded it twice -- and i agree with the others, it should have been renamed the second time). after installing 1.16, i picked up a game i had started with 1.07. it ran fine for over 8 hours of gameplay. then in the year 1924 the game crashed. it crashed when i clicked the 'ok' button for a prompt telling me that egypt declared war on the zulus. i tried reloading the game several times, and it always crashed in the same place. i then uninstalled CivIII, reinstalled 1.07 and tried to load the game. i got errors that crashed CivIII without even opening the file. i figured it must be version-related, so i installed 1.16 again. still crashed at the same spot -- when the egyptians declared war on zululand.

SOOO, i figured, ok, maybe it's a corrupt SAV file. i picked up the game from a decade earlier and it worked fine; i played it out a bit differently, so the egyptians never declared war on the zulus in 1924 like in my previous game. i thought everything was kosher, but then in 1936 or so, those damned egyptians went after the zulus and crashed CivIII AGAIN. it only crashes when the egyptians declare war... what's up with that? BTW, i'm playing as the americans, 12 civs, large map.

as reported by others, my diplomacy screen is screwed up. i have about 9 active civilizations in my game, but my foreign advisor screen only shows 4 or 5, and the lines don't always work.

thanks a bunch, i hope you can help me. it would really suck to have to ditch a game i've invested about 18 hours in.

oh, one more thing -- when playing against a large number of civilizations, the computer's "turn" (processing time?) takes a VERY long time. long enough for me to get up and go grab a soda or something. i have a very up-to-date system with enough RAM and processing power to handle large photoshop files (i do graphic design), so i'm surprised at this lag time.

thanks again, sorry to write so much. :)

The screen no longer re-centralises on a unit when it moves off the screen.

Sorry if this has been mentioned in the current thread but I'm at work and don't have the time to read through the whole thing.

After installing the patch it is now impossible to right click on a unit to check the terrain or right click on an opposing unit to initiate dialogue (Can get round this by double clicking the opposing unit)
The option box appears but instantly dissapears.
This didn't happen before the patch.

Also, has the the problem with the resourceless maps been fixed?
Several of my games hae ended prematurely because some resources were either non-existant or only one or 2 appeared, both together, on a huge map. Yup, I did have the neccessary science researched, and I know some other people have suffered from this by reading a previous thread.

Thanks

Is "war weariness" changed in the v1.16? I attacked India in my current game for about 3 turns, I was a democracy, and all my people stayed happy. I did not have the suffrage wonder/police station yet. Cause i wiped them out in 3 turns with like 100 cavs, did not stay in war longer to see further effects.

Please answer. Thanks.

Before the patch I had a democracy (emperor mode), and three AI decided to demand from me during their turns. I ignored them all, and all declared war on me (they all wanted exactly the same thing too), and the happiness of my population absolutely skyrocketed. When I later sued for peace with one (he finally got his units all the way over to my territory 15 turns later), and gave them extra gold to make them take it, my happiness went down.

Post patch, in a non-war situation, I gave tech to the Aztecs, who I had bottled up and without iron. After I did so, my happiness went down.

It seems as if your population is happier if you stand up to the other civs. I haven't seen a penalty for caving in, but there's definitely an effect for doing well against them, and it's not specific to the latest patch.

I installed the patch--I think, but nothing has changed. I thought I made sure it was going to the right location. I used their default path to install, except on drive F. I neglected to check version number after install...

Maybe I just didn't use caravels enough pre-patch, but I'm fairly sure I was able to sail them through sea and even ocean squares before.. Now I can't get 'em to go anywhere but shore. Fairly useless, that. Did I just somehow miss this before, or is it a new issue?

Am I the only one experiencing sound problems? Admittedly, it's only a minor thing, and I can't be sure that the patch caused it - but some of my unit sounds (combat ones) seem to have changed - in one case (Knights I believe) the sound almost seems to be played at a slow speed (like a 45 played at 33 for those that remember vinyl!). Anyone else heard similar things?

Other than that (touch wood) I don't seem to be getting a repeat of any other problems - I have had one abort but couldn't reproduce the sequence of events to repeat it.

One minor gripe (which I think was there pre-patch and was even there in CIV2), is that sometimes you can inadvertantly move a unit you didn't mean to, when using the numeric pad direction keys. For instance, you move one unit using the '1' key, and the next unit in sequence moves the same direction as well. Maybe its a problem with the repeat rate of the key or maybe I linger on the key a little too long - but it happens at least a couple of times a night, and is highly irritating. I know it is relatively easy to avoid this in program code (by ensuring the the key is released before continuing or before polling the keyboard again- maybe its just something they never thought of).

Hi Jeff, and thanks for your help!

I downloaded the latest patch, the one on December 7th. Everything was fine until I went to build my first city. Then, the game crashed! I tried again, and again, it crashed. I uninstalled, rebooted, and reinstalled without the patch, and everything was fine. I decided to try the patch again, and again, while trying to found my first city, the game crashed! It is definitely the patch that has caused this, and I am absolutely positive that this is the latest patch. I uninstalled, rebooted, and reinstalled the game, this time, again, without the patch. I don't know if you can help me, but for now, I won't use this patch until another one comes out, as the game is working fine without it.

This happens on my computer except in reverse. The sound of the knights is high and squeeky.

In addition to this, I can see all of the diplomacy lines connecting to my own civilization, but none between other civs. I have established embasies, and that didn't make a difference, but I haven't yet planted any spies (I don't think that would change anything, but maybe someone decided you need to spy on someone to glean this information.)

I noticed that when installing the patch that it looked like some of the sound files were updated. I have not been able to hear the sounds though as I cannot find my CD.....I was er, playing without it before. Thanks for fixing that "PROBLEM" also Firaxis. God forbid you make it easier for the people that paid their 60+ bucks to play the game. [/rant]

Well, maybe that explains the lack of responses.. I apparently should check my posts more carefully or at least make sure I'm fully awake before posting. Galleys are what I'm having trouble with.. not caravels. Any kind of confirmation that this is a bug or a slap upside the head to let me know it's supposed to be that way would be great. :p

From the manual : "Having a rival declare war on you actually decreases war weariness, perhaps because it relieves the prewar uncertainty and tension."

Doesn't last, but you do get a bit of happiness to start with. Not a bug, I'm happy to say. ;)

:king: I have finally discovered how to Uninstall/reinstall. As I have already said, after installing the patch it corrupted the uninstall/install feature on my computer (I don't know if it did it to everyone but I know it did to some). I ended up having to send InstallShield Wizard to the Recycle Bin before it would let me reinstall the files (I still had to delete all the old files manually). Anyway I am sticking to v. 1.07f until Firaxis can release a patch that doesn't prevent me from playing completely.

Strange about the war-weariness point. I'm using monarchy right now, and for the first time I've noticed cities falling into disorder for no (and I stress NO) apparent reason during war. No resource trade agreements have expired, no routes severed... population didn't grow... hmmm. WHY?

I was wondering about this. It's almost as if Monarchy's war-weariness (still not supposed to be any, right?) got switched with Republic or something. Am I just confused?

Basics of war weariness
/-----------------------------\

-Occurs when using either Democratic or Republic as your type of an government.

-Doesn't show up if you stay in a war for only few turns..

-You must be declaring war, not them.

\------------------------------/

And for those who can't get their 'copies' of the Civilization to work :scan: , have you checked from the behind of your package that it reads: 'made by Firaxis', not by Mitsumi or HP?

Oh, and watch out for the updated cracks... :goodjob:
Btw. I bought the game and that worked for me ;-)

think this was mentioned already but in my current game i am getting this problem alot, after a unit moves it 'sticks' to that unit and does not go to the next unit, the only way i can get it to work agian is to save the game and reload it

also another minor thing that carried over from the original, my desktop is in 800x600 and i have auto hide check in the task bar menu, but when i start the game it remains there (but in the 800x600 position) fortunatnly i can still access the start button and disable it but it is still a nuisance nonetheless
