Very quick noob SG

In fact, if and when we finish this game - we should keep the same group and start something harder, like on prince. I've been playing prince and getting space wins very late - so I would even be willing to try an SG monarch (lol we'd prolly lose, but it'd be fun).

I would be up for that. I haven't started the gotm for this month but I think I might be making an early exit. So my vote would be for monarch or if we try a variant we could do prince.

I didn't see GreyFox comments before I played, but the reason why I picked education was to get our cities started building universities to help boost our beaker totals. I left it at the last turn to philosophy but that can be changed or that can be traded for. Work your diplomatic skills GreyFox.

Looks like some great turns eektor - DEATH TO LOUIS :hammer: I think he deserved it...

I would still pick the Chinese as allies. If we pick on several of the smaller civs, we won't have a problem outteching them later on - at least at noble. One think I noticed about playing prince is that if the AI gets too much land, their research is rediculous....

Uhoh, maybe I shouldn't have declared war on the Romans and the Mongols. (just kidding)

As eektor leave GreyFox a LOVELY present of a stack of 10 Praets and 4 cats...

Yeah! War! :woohoo:

wait a minute ... NO WAR? :wow: what do you mean there is No war?

JUST KIDDING???? Geez, you know, I may be a builder at heart, but I am a warmonger in my hearts of hearts ...

 :rotfl:

I am on with a new SG after this. I think we could go for a variant, and do prince/monarch. As for the current SG ... we have to discuss on our end game now. How we are going to pursue our "inevitable" :D victory.

Geat set of turns, eektor! ... but where IS the save ???
:crazyeye:

My vote is domination, because I could use some practice in going for domination. I usually go for space ship or diplomacy.

BTW I am a peaceful person but oldbustedjorn keeps on passing me the game when he's at war. I just finish them off or declare peace. :D

Got it, but now is way too late (1 AM)

Will play tomorrow night. Sorry, bobrath, you have to wait one more day.

I almost always get domnation victory or backdoor domination.. I think its due to my unwillingness to raze cities ... so ended up aaways triggering the domination victory when I was going for conquest ... thus the only endgame movie I have not seen is conquest. But I don't mind going for domination this time round.

Noooooooooo. J/K

I'm up for a second run with this group. Been impressed at the speed we've got going on.

Now back to the current game:

Nice turns Eektor. Couple points for improvement (just hindsight and such) -
Switch out of theocracy and vassalge as soon as you're done building your military. Those two benefit you as the unit is built whereas OR and Bur have effects immeadiatly. Not a huge deal, but if we're racing QSH for Liberalism, it might come down to a single turn.
Building the christian monastery was a nice to have, but more in preparation for the days when we go to free religion. Since you knew you'd be able to build observatories in the next turn, I'd have done a token turn of work on it and then switched to observatory the next turn. Sure those hammers might decay out, but we'd bump our research up that much faster.

Neither of those are huge nits, just stuff I'm trying to notice more and more as I learn to be a better Civ4 player.

We still don't have Buddhism in Salamanca...
We can spread Buddhism to Pisae, Arretium, and that western tiny city of JCs. This will bring in at least +3gpt (more if JC builds some temples), will allow us more spying on JC in prep for war, and may help arretium flip a bit faster.

Yes, we need to spread our religion to the far shores. Having a friend in the faith will be a big deal.. at least until they get free religion over there... I appreciate all the exploring we're doing, but Caravels can carry missionaries for a reason. Lets use it. Be sure to check if the city we attempt to spread is under Theocracy. If it is = 100% failure rate and a waste of hammers. Spread Bud to anyone that will take it and keep checking the diplomatic screen to see if anyone is willing to switch.

If we can get philo... it will be worth it, but check to see if SQH has education already. If he does, then he's researching Liberalism right now and racing him will be tough (imo). I would not detour to guilds until we get liberalism or know its out of reach.

Make sure Lyons has a temple, but no detouring for Drama to save one city. Sure we'd lose dyes... but JC is next on the hit list anyway.

I've never been able to pull of conquest myself. I just enjoy taking over other civs cities! Domination or Conquest sounds like a good idea to me, but if we want to go that route... have to make sure our research is heavy on the military and that we have cities capable of cranking out units (and an effective way of getting them overseas too!).

Thanks for the tips bobrath. Looking back I saw that I was a little slow to change civics. And yeah I need to work more on my MM'ing to take advantage of the little detail stuff, but I'm learning the more I play.

Oh and for sending a missionary to one that has the theocracy civics, you don't waste a missionary. It won't let you use the missionary period. I know because I've tried that a few times in previous games  .

There was one caravel I was trying to bring back to pick up some missionaries. Another person could do that and send them to our future ally.

Allies!

(or future targets...)

@eektor: but that MMing of civics only applies to spiritual civ -- like ourselves. For non-spiritual civs, you have to weigh it against the cost of 1 or 2 turns of no-production due to anarchy.

agree completely.

The partially explored northen island seems to be vacant. Once we start Astronomy, we can start building settlers + escort in preparation for the colonization of the northern island.

I wouldn't go squeeze a city in Tonku's continent. Its not very useful (until we have airport).

First off, great turns eektor! Way to :ar15: Louis!!

I think we definatly need to get Guilds ASAP now, since we finally have horses! We should build up some Conqustidors, and then finally take over the rest of our continent! JC needs to die... and FAST!

Here's a few random thoughts:

1) Keep Chinese as an ally, especially since we have the horses from them. Let's at least keep that going as long as we are building our UU.

2) I vote for going for a domination victory. I also have done very few domination victories. On most of my games, I'd take over a few neighbors, and then kick into builder mode and go for space or culture.

3) Keep bulding missionaries... we want Buddism eveywhere we can for the $$ and to keep an eye on cities. :scan:

I'm definatly up for a new game with this group, I think we are really clicking along! Since I became the de facto leader (when Penwa dissapeared) I can keep that role as long as no one minds?

Now, since we're not "noobs" anymore... should we try to come up with a name/callsign? Doesn't matter to me.

How soon would we want to start a new game? wait until this one is complete? Otherwise can get things set up and we can start when this one is close to wrapping up.

I'll come up with few ideas for variants. I think (for now) we should stick to prince, at least when I look at my skills. I have not had luck at Monarch, in fact I just finished GOTM3... and got wiped off the map in 570AD

I can still lose at Prince too :)

I am right now trying to figure out how to play larger maps. The reasoning is this. I usually rely on only have to build a few cities, and then conquering for the rest of the land. When I play large maps, I get way too far behind because I chase wonders and don't expand fast enough. A variant would be cool too.

vq02 - Very Quick. Seems to fit this group well... At least it did when Greyfox was turning his turn around so quickly.... Fox wherefor art thou?

Calling it vq02 sounds good enough to me.

Would anyone have problems playing on a huge map? My system is fine, but I wanted to check if a huge map gives anyone else problems as far as running it?

I'll try not to be too long-winded here...

I've been kind of wanting to try a variant on city placement. Kind of goes like this: Our first city: Must settle in place. Cities 2-5, must be 4 tiles in one direction (1 is 4N, 1 at 4S, etc.) Once these 4 are settled, we then expand to 4N and 4S of the east and west cities (we then have 9 cities in a square formation. We continue this pattern on a 3rd ring. We take the terrain and resources however it may fall. Once we hit a coast (within 3 tiles of a city) we stop in that direction. Also, if our city spot is unbuildable (only because of peak or water) We must use the closest availalble spot. Hopefully this makes sense.

If the AI has a city in our way, we must take it and raze it, unless it is in the correct spot.

I would use a huge Contientients or maybe custom conitnents (I'd have to look at that map again) This should give us room to expand as we need.

Interesting concept... Perhaps an alternative that would still give us a bit of freedom:

Worm - Must found your next city adjacent (so the fat cross touches) to the previous city. If you end on water, next city must begin adjacent to that same water mass...

(and lets keep the chili pepper topic icon, easy to find!)

Okay, new reporting style. No turn by turn reporting :D ... its a builder's turnset anyway. For those who want autolog style, here it is:

Begining

I looked around, both western isle cities are building workboats, why? Since Salamanca is faster, veto Murica. Changed it to Lighthouse.

Also noticed Madrid is no growing ... why?
VQS-madrid-city.jpg

Because it is not working on the corn! It has one more tunn to grow, so I MM it to work on corn for growth.

I have also sent one caravel home, and one caravel to explore the northern island.

1545AD
Just before starting our push for Liberalism, I checked Qin:
VQS-Qin-trade-before.jpg

:woohoo: He has no Paper --> he has no Education!!!! We wll have our free tech!

1550AD
A great artist is borned.
Hmmm, what to do with him?
Maybe move him to Lyons for cultural bomb.
In the end, he wa sstill there in Lyons, let the next player decide if he wants to cultural bomb Lyons.

GreyFox: Traded Divine Rights for Engineering + Horseback Riding with Qin

Sweet, by the way, could you post a screenshot or two of the tech tree?

Good turns and good job with Liberalism.

I think its time to start planning JC's demise. It looks like some of our UU was built by Greyfox, but I'm sure we'll need more as well as some cats. I have no clue whats left over from the war with Louis.

Greyfox, could you give us an update of what JC's city defense looks like?
