Very quick noob SG

Thanks, bobrath ...

Glad to see everyone in agreement about declaring on the Mongols ... cause that's what I am going to do anyway even if all 4 of you say I shouldn't :D

Without looking at the save, I serious have no feel about whether you will get a chance to play, bobrath. But I predict you would, even counting those currently revolting cities, we need like 1/4 more land area than we currently have.... Unless I go 100% :culture: ... hmmm.... should I? Should I? :mischief:

I agree the culture slider should be cranked up. We just need some land, and taking out GK and cranking out the culture will do it FAST... not sure if it will in 10 turns fast... but fast :)

About Sam Infantry - I always thought better to have some around for when the other civs get some planes than to have to build it all right after they get it. Besides, I didn't build that many like 1 or 2 and I think oldbustedjorn upgraded some units to sam infantry.

About culture - I'm still new at this domination win so wasn't thinking about cranking culture all the way up. I think you might want to wait for industrialization before you crank it all the way up. IIRC it will be discovered in 2 turns.

Preface

Sorry guys, report is a bit late and incoherent. Firstly, never realize a war will drag my usual ~40-minutes turnset to 4 hours long! Also, RL gets in the way, so must play halfway and continue in the night. Secondly, I learn for the first time it is extremely difficult to write turnset report for a war ... pardon me, this is first war report ... :crazyeye: ... I promise I will do better next time (if there is a next time )

Inherited Turns

Tempted as I was, no, I did not start the war immediately....

First, I prepared for war. (as I said, war is won during preparation)

So, let's look at the civics and what cities are building ...

Firstly, Police State? What for? Money is power!!!! Revolt to Uni Suff.
Next, jails and courthouse everywhere.... hmmm.... nope, this won't do. I think we are too worreid about war weariness. We are on the verge of wining, so I wouldn't waste precious war-preparation time taking care of war weariness. For all I care, we can have all cities red hot in war weariness after the war and we still win. Even if war weariness start dragging our war machine down, jails can be instantly brought with money.

So, I veto all the jails and courthouses. :D

Next, let's look at research ... :woohoo: we are close to industrialism. You know what this means, right? Right? But in 2 turns? Nope, I don't think so. A simple nudge at the research bar ... and hey, presto! Industrialism is due next turn. :D

VQS-last-industrial.jpg

[Preparation for War

With industrialism in, its time for tanks everywhere .... but before that can materialize, we need money, money Money. You know what that means, right? Right?

--> Research is set to 0. Radio is good for bombers, but it is taking too long .... 6 turns. I want money for tanks now. Right now. :rotfl:

Start of War

I actualy wanted to wait some more turns before starting the war, but the sneaky mongolians is trying to settle somewhere. Nope, nope, nope. You can't do that, mister Khan. (huh, so your lastname is not khan? Khan is actually your title? Why would I care!?!?!)

VQS-mongo-war-start.jpg

With the sinking of the ship, the mongolain war has began .... :hammer:

Capture of Chehalis

VQS-capture-chehalis.jpg

Capture of Old Srhai

VQS-cap-old-sahai.jpg

and our shiny new tank had a field test ...

VQS-tank-1st-action.jpg

Sorry guys, those were the last screenies you would see in war. Somehow, the mongolian stole all my pictures :D .... okay, okay, the truth: I was ttoo engross in the battle to take more pictures. :hammer2:

In any case, the same turn that we captured Old Sarai, we captured Samargand, thanks to our new weapons, tanks.

ALso, QSH decide he wants to join in the fun, for free! Haha, I checked him out during the inherited turn ... he was asking something like 3.5K gold for a war then. Now he decide to take the free ride and try to grab some cities for himeself, eh? No no no, you sneaky bastard. I will not let you share the spoils of war!!!! :nono:

-

Building while the war is on-going

I decided that spainards need some entertainment to keep them distrated from the war, so that there won't be those weariness nonsense. And thus, I wasted the GE for this ...

VQS-war-wonder.jpg

Ok, I know, I know, its a complete :smoke: ... but hey, we are going to win, and I want to see some wonder movie!

Also, remember the japanese city that was razed in consideration to Mongolian culture? It turns out that the site is extremely strategic ... a Suez or Paname canal ... so, I built a settler and settled there

Why is the city needed? Because I got so frustrated moving troops one puny little step each turn .... it will take them forever to reach the next mongolia city! So I thought I would use the transport and moe them via sea route. However, I then realize that all my transport are on the wrong sid eof the continent!!! [pissed]

More Captures

In 1910, we captured Tiffilis and New Sarai.

In 1914, we captured Karakorum. This city is taken by brute force, since the main stack of infantry and artillery has fallen so far behind that waiting for them would be forever. SO I promoted the tanks to double collateral damage, and bulldoze into it. One tank has nobly sacrificed itself. Please observe 5 minutes of silence in membranc eof the tank ...

The Million Dollar Question

Would these captures be enough to force bobrath into an early retirement? :wow:

-

No ... it isn't.

Congrats, bob! YOU GET TO WAR!

After Turns Screenie

Our tropps are nearly in place to capture the two remaining mongolian cities:

Siege of Ning Hsia:
VQS-ning-hsia-siege.jpg

Seige of Tufan:
VQS-tufan-siege.jpg

EDIT: the above picture should be the same as the one for Ning Hsia,
but I think I deleted the final composite picture ...
sorry for the extra wide pitcure!

Best of luck , bob! Finish the game!!!!

...

Hey, wait, come back! My show is not yet over!!!

Just to let you guys see what Uni Suff can do to a war machine:

Our Power rockets:
VQS-power-graph.jpg

And just look at our army composition (Guess what is the majority?):
VQS-our-military.jpg

Look at GK's puny litte boy-scouts he called "an army":
VQS-enemy-military.jpg

Now, the Billion Dollar Question

Would conquering Mongols be enough?

Find out for yourselves!

We have 3 cities in revolt:
VQS-revolt.jpg

And we need ...
VQS-victory-cond.jpg

... another 14%! :wow:

I think Saladin needed some hammering ...

On bright side, our main infrantry + artillery stack had almost catch up with the conquest ... (one wonders what they are for then :crazyeye:), bob is in position to immediate swing the infantry and artillery to Saladin's land. Also, I have a small task force waiting in a transport north of Saladin's coast.

Good Luck.

This ends my last turnset of this SG. Its been a pleasure.

Got it. Will actually play later today and get a write up either late tonight or tomorrow morning.

Well, here's the important part of my turnset, the ending domination stats:

Spoiler :

civ4screenshot00053yo.jpg

:aargh: [pissed] :gripe: :thumbdown :shake:

Got one city set to come out of revolt in 2 turns, and two more in 4 turns (baghdad in 11!!!). I think without doing anything else, this game is won, just a matter of watching the turns pass.

Of course I've left it in a state where the next player can :hammer: Saladin into the ground. Mecca is his last stand, and I've got its cultural defense knocked out. It would have happenend in my turn, but infantry is *so* slow.

War does take longer to play... I may have to work on speed-war.... hmmmm. Screenies in next post.

TurnLog - I edited out all the combat (cept for one fun point) cause its just really long. If anyone really wants to see it, I can email it to ya! BTW, I rush built a TON of culture push bldgs through my entire turn. No sense running a positive cash flow and not using it on ultra cheap buildings.

Switched off of war machine status mid turn because frankly unless QSH gets suddenly uppity we're way overstocked on military. So Free Religion and Free Speech makes for super culture and happiness. I am spreading buddhism and chistianty to a new city every turn (airlift from both cities).

I'm pushing research (all 10% of it) to get us able to build the effeil tower (free culture in all cities). Our major cities are on research, but the next player can switch them to wealth if you want. Research done in 2 turns, then crank research to 0 and culture to 100. Pull our biggest hammer city to the tower and waltz to the win (imo).

civ4screenshot00063gw.jpg

Along the way, enjoy rubbing Saladin out. Massive infantry stacks (2) heading to Basra. Destroyers have its CD (cultural defense) down to 0. You can bypass Medina with the tanks and gunships if you want, there's a massive infantry and artillery stack just behind them - since medina has 60CD... Kufah only has a couple of our tanks outside... but is very lightly defended and 0 CD (thanks to our navy parked outside). Najran is waiting for a force (couple tanks ready) to pluck it - 0 CD. Mecca has all of the remaining defenses (and a recently popped GP) but no CD. Just get your tanks over there and enjoy it.

Both carriers have been running their 3 fighters on inland bombing duty. Not much else left for them.

I especially enjoyed Saladin doing this for me:
civ4screenshot00048py.jpg

Yes he really managed to get a pikeman, longbow, and settler into the far north. I think they were in a chinese city. Dunno, but our conquistador enjoyed some "old world" flavor.

I did raize one Arabian city, It was the lonely fishing spot on the penninsula. Didn't write the name down, but it was the first to go. Raized it becaue frankly we'd be capturing (I thought) its neighbor 2 spots away real soon anyway. Plus it just felt good.

If you can't beat Saladin in 2 turns, I'll be very disappointed. Course I did leave all sorts of injured units... muah ha ha.

Actually I did leave one special treat:
civ4screenshot00024bw.jpg

You can wait for culture to destroy it (2% arabian) when its the capital or shove it over at your whim. Thought it was only fair for that final mistake to.... be left for last!

Actually the conquis is very useful, i am very grateful the player before me did not upgrade it to gunship. Because in one of the earlier city capture, I have no units nearby to capture the city (all are gunships), and QSH has a fairly big enough stack to take the city. Fortunately, I saw the conquis and deice to gamble ... killed all the units in the city with gunships and the conquis simply walk into an empty city for capture

Great job finishing off the Mongols, and the starting to hammer Saladin. You must be grateful that I bother to take the destroyers through a very long journey to the southern coast of the continent, eh? ;)

:wow: the game is till not yet finished????

Hmm, I guess Maquis has the honor of finishing what he started ...

Hmm... I guess I it got back to me... guess I didn't expect it to.

Looks pretty cut and dry... I could sit and let the culture win for us... or do I want to finish Saladin just for the fun of it?

I'll be playing tonight. Should be quick! :goodjob:

Believe me I tried almost every trick I knew. I did take two turns in the center to heal and realign troops, but I was slowed by having too much infantry (slow) and not enough tanks (fast). Hindsight, if I'd just continued the march from Genghis straight to Sala... I'd probably still have missed it, but Maquis would have less of an army to play with.

Side note... Since I am going to wrap up this SG tonight... I am looking ahead.

I am ready to start VQ03! I'll give VQ vets first dibs on a roster spot, but I am going to open it up to others as well (unless we fill the roster right away)

I've come up with an interesting variant for this one. I'm calling it "The Human AI"

Wow, I thought for sure bobrath could finish it. Good luck Maquis and finish it off.

@Maquis - Hmm ... "The Human AI" sounds intriguing. I'm curious what the rules are.

OK, I'll give a little preview... I tested this on a game over the weekend and found it to be a great challenge.

The Human AI

Ok, we have a problem playing CIV. Maybe we're just indecisive, maybe we're scared of making the wrong choice... or maybe we just think the AI knows best. But we need the AI's help to play this game!

The AI is going to call the shots in this game. (Well, most of them that is) Where we settle, what we build, what we research! Is it a handicap? Or is the AI really going to be helpful?

Here the rules:

1) The AI tells us where to settle. We must settle on a tile highlighted by the AI. We get to choose the general location, but the blue circle is the spot.

2) The AI tells us what to build/research (most of the time) We have to pick one of the recommendations of the AI for builds/research (there are going to be two choices for each build)

Now, just to make things a little more fair, I want to give a little wiggle room here... we can choose anything we want every 4th research, and also, we have the option choose whatever we want in a city on every 4th build. I realize this may be a little hard to track, but as long as we pass the information on to the next player, it should stay manageable.

3) And lastly... our workers will be automated! You can issue one worker command (to a single worker) on your turnset, and then it has to be automated the rest of the time. It can be set to "improve nearest city" or "build trade network"

We can do whatever we want diplomatically, and have full control of our units (except worker/settlers of course) once they are built.
