What does killing mean to you? I know its a strange topic but I was rinsing a roach down the sink this morning and the thought occured to me, "is this wrong?". I'm curious to hear everyone's opinions.

In the immortal words of Elmer Fudd

"Kill the wabbit, Kill the wabbit":goodjob:

"Killing humans can be acceptable too in many situations"

ESPECIALLY when they crap all over the beaches!

All killing is wrong, except out of self-defense.

i choose this becoz human, and animals kill for survival. Just like things for food, self defence, but kill for the need, NOT FOR THE GREED !!

Killing people is wrong, except for self-defence, or direct defense of others (but even then non-lethal ways are to be preferred if possible)

Killing animals for fun, out of boredom, for no good reason, is wrong IMHO too.

that option doesn't seem to be on the poll, though.

All killing is right, except out of self-defense. :mischief:

:joke:

I personally believe that killing people is the cowards way out. If you want to revenge (for example), its best to make the revenge last a long time, to really make them suffer. Killing them will relieve them of all pain.

Killing of people is wrong except in defence of someone (including you). Killing of animals is alright, except for the pleasure of killing (no fox hunting, but making rugs is fine).

Another limited poll with no option for "killing is ok in some circumstances, not ok in others".

That would be my choice.

Which is in direct defiance of the Old Testament, the literal translation of thou shalt not kill is: though shalt not kill not murder, at least as it's translated from Hebrew, this was corrupted in the 19th century by some religous groups, possibly your own I don't know, and has served as a tennant to the advocation of war ever since. I was unsure that it was true at first but then I lost touch with the last thread I posted it in, I don't see any reason why anyone would lie though, not about something like that it would be too easy to contradict and would sully the web site in questions reputation.

Truth is though shalt not kill had been a thorn in the churches side for thousands of years, so eventually they do what most corrupt organisations do, rewrite the text to suit their own agendas, nice an easy:)

Though shalt not do murder, even then what is righteous killing? Does it exist?

The exact Hebrew wording of this biblical phrase is lo tirtzack. One of the greatest scholars of Hebrew/English linguistics (in the Twentieth Century) -Dr. Reuben Alcalay - has written in his mammoth book the Complete Hebrew /English Dictionary that "tirtzach" refers to "any kind of killing whatsoever." The word "lo," as you might suspect, means "thou shalt not."

There's the text from the Old Testament in Hebrew, perhaps someone who speaks Hebrew could validate it.

Make of that what you will, oh I forgot you already did :p

Self defence is the only justifiable way of behaving and even Jesus advocated dying rather than striking back at an enemy that would killl you. I'm not sure most people have the courage to do that, I certianly wouldn't the survival instinct is too strong.

EDIT: I just checked out the internet on this thorny issue and it seems tht many web sites are claiming that though shalt not kill should not be taken from the KJV of the bible as literal translation as it is from an old version of English and the original translation is though shalt not murder, I'm confused either the Jewish guy who aughta know what the translation is, I mean it is his language, or the fundementalists are lying or genuinely believe that what they are saying is true? Very interesting, I suspect that the Jewish translation is accurate but would really like to know either way so I can point this out when people justify killing :) I wonder I genuinely do, is this lies and propaganda and which side is lying?

Romans 13:9. For this, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not kill, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness, Thou shalt not covet; and if there be any other commandment, it is briefly comprehended in this saying, namely, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.

Makes sense.

Thou Shall Not Kill. It's pretty darn simple. Why can't Pat Robertson get it through his fat head?

Sorry I'm reading web sites and updating as I go, who the hell is Pat Robertson and why do some people appear to hate him so much?

Interestingly there are plenty of web sites that claim that it is though shalt not murder, most if not all are either fundementalist Catholic or Christian web sites. Those that aren't maintain a different view it seems. It's not clear, are there any Rabbis on line who can clear this up? :)

That's it I don't think trawling through biased web sites is very revealing? Why do loud mouths on either side ruin unbiased interpritation. It's sad.

Don't look now but that roach is probably crawling back out of the sink right about now. It's squish 'em or nothing. Killing roaches - good; Killing kittens and puppies - bad. Killing child molesters, mass murderers and terrorists -good. Killing anyone else - bad.

I can't really make any blanket statements about this, except perhaps that killing should be avoided.

increase my killing power, eh?

you shouldn't kill people...or anything else, for that matter, unless you have a good reason...
