Voices in the Dark: PreIOT Thread

Updated my post with equipment details.

Right, at this time, the collaborative phase has concluded. I will be without a personal PC for 1-2 more weeks, as per current estimates; the game will not run until then, though I will be working in the background to formalize many of the mechanics and the map.

If you so wish, you may begin to work on characters, as all relevant information has been released. Keep in mind the parameters; I reserve the right to reject any characters which violate the premise of the game (generally speaking, characters which attempt to subvert the "scientific" and "South African" portions of the mission). Keep in mind while working on them that the game will not commence for another week at the earliest, so if you think making one now would cause you to lose interest, than please wait.

I will serve as Dr Mava Rén, of Zulu mother and Chinese (ancestry) father, born in Nongoma. Mava was educated at Edinburgh for a PHD in geography. Will join for research into the planet's geography and will serve in exploration operations as part of our overall colonial project on behalf of the South African Space Agency.

Name: Robert McTavish
History: Born and raised in a poor Afrikaner family in Johannesburg. He was bright as a child and helped to support his family by working in a factory. There, he learned basic mechanical engineering and showed aptitude for it. The factory owner noticed and allowed him to help out with maintenance of the machinery. He took night classes and got his high-school diploma at age 23. Then, he went to college at night and worked during the day. He managed to get a degree in mechanical engineering and then got a degree in robotics. He found a job at a laboratory and became very experienced in robotics. He volunteered for the mission to help with the robotics on board the ship.
Role: Engineer, Robotics

Name: Robert McTavish
History: Born in England. He trained in martial arts as a child, learning Jiu-Jitsu and Kung Fu. Also, he is proficient in marksmanship. Later in life he became a member of the SAS and then emigrated to South Africa, also enlisting in the special forces. It is said that he has killed 3 dozen men with his bare hands, and many more with various firearms. He volunteered for the mission because "I want to be the first man ever to kill an alien. Also, I wonder what happens when you rip a man's intestines out in space. I must find these answers."
Role: Security, Exploration.

This would be an example of that "circumventing South Africa" thing I asked people not to do. Also, *why* is he someone we would want on a scientific mission? He doesn't sound useful, and in fact, sounds like the sort of person I'd want as far away from the expedition as possible, given his reasons for volunteering :p

Which is not to say you can't be trained military or whatnot, but you need better justification, and the British thing isn't going to fly.
