Sorry guys, RL hit me hard. Most probably, I won't have a chance to play until tomorrow evening.

Situation:
As Byzantines have cavalry, we are at least 4 techs behind. This is not a good thing. It becomes worse by thinking of the chance that Russian cossacks might show up. At least, they are half a continent away.
Our defense is weak everywhere. Therefore, we lack mp as well, limiting our production capacity (see Rusicade). Furthermore, due to the number of unhappy citizens, we are in danger of loosing other cities due to cultural shocks.
We are threatened actively at Nora (Byzantine muskets and longbow), at Malaca (Portuguese stack of archers/spear) and by the sheer presence of a Viking and a Byzantine town next to Gades in the east.
Due to the geostrategical situation, I don't see any new cities being founded in the east. There is a chance for new cities next to Faro (German) and in the formerly Celtic territory. As the Portuguese have RoPs with both, Germans and Iroquois, in the southwest our expansion is limited as well.

Things to change:
Will change production of the less productive cities from Knights to NumMercs. Will switch Leptis Minor (2/0/1; +1 in 1) from settler (in 8) to NumMerc (in 8). Other adjustments will follow.

Sure I can rush knights. And I agree about to have more cities, as well.
But we need more units, and we need them quick. Remember, a cavalry only can kill 1 unit at a time, regardless if it will be a knight or a NumMerc at half the costs. So, if we are attacked by 3 cavalries, but defend with 4 units, we will keep that town. And then we may have a chance to redline the cavalries and kill them with our counter-attack.
So, cheaper but good defenders are a must.
I agree though, not to forget about knigths.

Under the assumption that the Ports will backstab us at the next turn, we are not able to build a new town in our southwestern region. In the east, the Vikings and the Byzantines prohibit settlements. The later ones block any attempt to build a new town at our western borders. Since the Vikings obviously are crossing Iroquois territory just now, no settlements are possible in the south. Even a settlement within our borders, for the only benefit of having our sixth army, would be dangerous right now. As soon as we'd loose one city, we would loose that army as well.

Gracious Japs (8 cities left) would sell Invention for iron, 10 gold and 16gpt. I agree, since Japs are at war with Byzantines, Greek and Babylonians. So, they will (hopefully) take their part of the pressure, and we will be one step closer to Gunpowder propelled projectiles.

Good turns, we are still alive! But how to catch up in techs? That's the big question!

About the techs: I would propose to have some kind of "alibi" scientist sitting around, so that we indeed will progress technologically. And the rest has to be done just by money.

What is frightening is that we are just past invention and the Germans and the Byzantines soon will show up with riflemen.
Perhaps, we should get Osaka (and maybe another Byzantine town) and then make peace for techs and try to switch sides, making then an alliance with the warmongering Theodora (look at her diplomatic relationships at f4 - this really is funny) against the Germans or preferrably another mid-size empire to get the next techs.
Even an attack in between against the Vikings at San Francisco might pay off. But for that we first would have to relocate one of our knight armies to the south (and to collect another stack of trebs down there).

I really hope that we may get Gunpowder cheap and find some saltpeter within our borders, so that we could upgrade to muskets soon.

Another point we have to take care of is the situation on iron. As I've traded it with the Japs, this one mine next to Nora is crucial for us. And at the time being, it is under constant (although yet weak) attack from our opponents. A fortress - better a barricades - on top of it might be helpful.

OK, good turns, we are still alive. It might have been better to trade Gunpowder instead of Education, but better this than nothing. Looks like we would not be able to catch up by capturing TGL.

Gormdragan is UP. There is a plenty of time to play till Sunday night. And it is only 5 turns.
 
I originally intended to play this SG during Memorial Day weekend. Unfortunately, I am called off for work. Will be away for about 2 weeks in Louisiana, not sure if I will have internet but if I do I will play while I am there. Sorry guys.
