VW cheated on emissions tests

Because he isn't wrong and it isn't inane, and you do this in every thread formy?
Show me any advanced country on the planet that doesn't have environmental protection laws.

This isn't Guatemala.

And you have yet again engaged in an "inane" personal attack that has absolutely nothing to do with this thread, as you so frequently do.

I am referring to you ignoring entire parts of peoples arguments and just trying to paint anyone who has differing opinions as "crazies" - or in this case "inane"

The comment was inane, not the person.

You see, unlike you, I try not to engage in "inane" personal attacks.

Furthermore, I don't have to respond to every single bit of largely irrelevant stuff in a post. If you don't like it, too bad.

The point is you ignore most of the relevant points and hinder discussion by doing so. If you want to ignore relevant parts of discussion, then why are you on a discussion forum? Didn't you say you wanted to leave because people kept trying to actually have legitimate discussions [and when people like Camikaze tried to encourage discussion you chafed and did what you are doing here]?

The point is you have no point. You are just incessantly engaging in patently silly personal attacks as you have done yet again, instead of even thinking about addressing the issues.

There is no rule in this forum that someone has to respond to each and every single sentence of a post. Now is there?

You also do it yourself on a regular basis, because you continue to ignore large segments of my replies to you whenever you don't feel like responding.

:rotfl:

And I have no idea at all what you are referring to in regard to Camikaze. Nor do I care because it is completely irrelevant to the discussion, much like the parts of your posts I intentionally ignore.

I take an effort to respond to probably greater than 90% of your concerns when you ask about them, but I don't think anyone can say the same for you here. And you are right there is no rule about how much you should respond to, but that said - you have had moderators try and deal with the fact that you don't try and add to a discussion more often than not. You tend to substitute discussion with rows of emoticons and pages of private message spam - why not address Commodores points at the least in this thread rather than just taking his statement as "inane" - can't you see how its a bit of a problem when people can't participate in discussion when you ignore most of what they say?

Again, I have no idea what you are talking about. If you think I am violating the forum rules, report me.

Otherwise stop with these incessant discussions of me instead of the topic. You are derailing yet another thread with this "inane" nonsense.

Apparently any source from a conservative, or a company that hires thousands of people but one of them happened to be an 'Islamaphobe' is all it takes for formy to consider those sources invalid.

Oh and also ... Evidence? Evidence? Evidence? Evidence? Evidence?

Yet another "inane" drive-by personal attack that doesn't have anything to do with the thread? Gee, what a surprise.

And you actually think "sources" Fox News and Breitbart have any credibility at all in matters relating to bigotry or race? Really?

Of all modern social issues, this one might be one that makes me the most incoherently, spittingly angry.

A small cabal of managers colluded to defraud the employees, shareholders, and customers. They conspired to steal marketshare from competitors that were producing a superior product. The conspired to commit assault upon the citizen, with a focus on the lower-class.

I want a list of firings, a list of torts, and a list of arrests for these scum. And I'll never get it. The CEO will just walk away with $26 million in bonuses.

44,000 healthy years lost in Europe
Researchers ... have calculated these specific health costs due to mortality in Europe and the United States to be at least 39 billion US dollars. Using this method of damage calculation, one should take into account another 62 billion US dollars in damage if Volkswagen does not recall their cars.

That number boggles.
Let's have a fun game: let's pretend half of the attributable deaths are false. And then let's, I dunno, care about people's deaths at half of what is reasonable. Screw the whiners who care about sick family, right? We're still at $10 billion in damage, with a total potential of $25 billion

The general public world-over does not understand externalized cost and things like this will continue to happen with little repercussion until they do.

When I explain externalized cost to people, I go with the example,

"If I went to my neighbor's yard and dumped a gallon of hydrazine on it and he dies while picking up his newspaper tomorrow, I go to jail.
If the power plant dumps mercury and CO2 and other pollutants into the air that makes your kids mentally deficient and gives you cancer, you chalk it up to God working in mysterious ways.
"

Even then, they don't really get my point.

Why not prosecute a cabal of people that conspired to defraud the shareholders, the employees, and the customers? And, y'know, caused billions of dollars in damage?

The difference in this example is that it was an intentional conspiracy, that would have a chain of command and mandates. This wasn't just a series of step-wise failures or 'doing the least required' that leads to other major problems.

Not sayin it's right but China would execute them.

Not sayin it's right but China would execute them.

Not saying you're wrong, but if they were a Chinese company the government would have assisted them in the fraud.

Don't be a dumbbehind. (I am mean the a-word - and I hate myself for saying "A-word")

China executes powerful individuals. Not mere pans of the game. (I think... maybe not - prove me wrong!)
Moreover, this is far from as special as the mind-numbed media hysteria leads to believe.
As I have gathered from the latest news, about everyone has vastly different results on the road when compared to lab conditions. Because the lab has been the standard - not the road.

As far as I can tell - VW just embraced that reality to an unacceptable obvious point.

China would not executive no one for this, Jesus.

The government of the PRC executes people to regain face. Face has been lost. The PRC would execute some of them almost for certain.

a cabal of people that conspired to defraud the shareholders, the employees, and the customers? And, y'know, caused billions of dollars in damage?

We have this weird tendency in our biases that when someone presents orthogonal reasons that something should be done, but add them together with diminishing returns. But they should at least be added one for one.

They defrauded people AND stole market share from legit companies AND hurt poor people and the tax payer. These are are independent reasons to be pissed.

But we don't seem to add.

If I said "don't eat that meat, it will make you sick AND it tastes gross", neither reason subtracts any value from the other.

See this is why having a socioeconomic system where accumulating the maximum amount of money possible is the main priority might be a bad idea
