Chess. Go. Diplomacy. Stalingrad. PanzerBlitz. Third Reich. Squad Leader. Terrible Swift Sword. Panzer Group Guderian (and others). ... and -- of course -- Civilization belongs to this illustrious history !!!!

Apparently: "All-Time" doesn't include those who of us who've been around long enough to understand the history of gaming ...

Which, I guess, begs question: Where are the classics? Which is to say, why is Civ the one game on the "Top Ten" of "ALL TIME" that appeals to the veterans?

Apparently, "All Time" begins with the invention of the computer game.

In my opinion, the crap-list that was put out caters to the younger generation who never got to play the good game that made YOU think. Quake??? Doom??? Come on, those games rely only on your friggin mouse finger speed. I am pretty amazed that Civ 2 was behind Civ 1. I understand that for it's time Civ was the greatest, but it doesn't match up to the follow up IMO. I mean, I didn't see Pac-Man on the list, and it was the greatest thing going back when I was a little kid. I don't understand how a gaming industry can so easily forget it's roots (Avalon Hill, SSI, Microprose to an extent). Where were the old Apple or Commodore games? How about Intellivision or Atari???

Anyone ever play "Chernobyl" for the Commodore LXIV, or its DOS counterpart, "Oakflat Nuclear Power Plant Simulator"? I especially enjoyed the latter, and it was placating to overheat the control rods to nearly 2000 Kelvins triggering a meltdown, PC speaker sirens and the following message:

"CONGRATULATIONS! You have allowed your power plant to overheat and caused the core assembly to melt. This has caused major radiation release into the environment with major loss of life although somehow you managed to survive the disaster!"

Those two are my favorites.

That's also a computer game, Kefka. Just not for a pc.

And these kind of lists are always controversial. I agree with one thing: Doom is #1! Although I have Unreal Tournament and Quake II (I don't like Q3), I still play Doom. I still get frightened when suddenly a monster appears behind the corner and Doom still gives me a challenge. Although I've played the game far too much, which makes me quite invincible against others (sorry for the arrogance), you can always make it hard for yourself in single player mode by setting up a turbo e.g.. Well, it's just the best. And although it can't be compared, I think it's better in it's type then Civilization is in his... (Ai, that's a dangerous remark.)

By the way: it's also stunningly well programmed: it still works on any Windows OS and when Windows didn't existed yet, I always used Doom to check if my hardware was working, like the soundcard, or null-modem and later even network.

Looking at the list I would guess that the majority of the people that picked the games are between the ages of 24 and 30. Reason being that those games were prime games that were played while this age group was growing up. My 2 cents.
To Matrix:
You think the code on Doom 1 was great? Well, I have no idea personally but I have gone to the id's FTP site and they let you DL the source code. The .txt file for source code has, I believe, John Carmack talking about how horrible the code looks now that he has learned alot more. Just a little tid-bit of information.</FONT f>

Which proves more that he's one heck of a genius rather then that Doom fails. It's simply my experience: Doom works, ever; Other games had flaws, always had.

Does DOOM run exclusively in real mode? I've never even played it myself, nor any other first-person shooter myself, but my friend claims he has trouble running it on Windows ME. I'd never buy a machine bundeled with that rehashed version of the OS which poorly attempts to sweep MS-DOS under the rug (albeit it runs on version 8.0). Of course, Windows has "existed" since late 1985 with Microsoft's modestly successful first release. Verrily by the time DOOM was completed, Windows 3.1 had become the norm.

I'm sure I'd be a bullet-riddled corpse if I ever played you...

BTW, what is the WORST computer game you ever played? I've only seen a handful...

bvd, my parents have WinME and Doom works on that machine too.

Side note: the modern processors are different, which makes a lot of old DOS programs run badly or not at all anymore. Programmers from that time couldn't have anticipated on that, but so far Doom works.

Worst game: I probably can't remember because I quit playing it very fast.

However I remember an Age of Empire kind of game which was really really boring, but I can't remember the name...

counter-strike should be separate from half-life and WHY is civ higher than civ2...civ2 was a step forward...

Look.. you dopes ! Go out & get a good board wargame or two...make it a cut or two above Axis & Allies yet not too difficult.. unless you are really interested in the subject matter. Convince 3 or 4 of your friends to play it with you. Then you will learn what gaming is about.

P.S. One of the best multiplayer board games was Stellar Conquest. Simple yet deep. I don't know if it is out there anymore.

Dog, Stellar Conquest is one of my favorites, except for all of the paperwork. Plus the fact that if you drew nothing but orange and red planets, life was going to be ugly for you

.

As for your suggestion, it's too hard these days to get a bunch of guys (or girls)together to play any game, except for Risk (yech) or Monopoly. I can remember very fondly a few games like Republic of Rome, Blackbeard, Stellar Conquest and Conquistador where we would play all evening long with three or four people.

Nobody wants to read a chart, or even roll dice anymore.

COMPUTER games are games for a computer.
Consle (px,nes,snes,ex...) games are for The whatever system it is. (usually T.V. but stuff like game boys are included)
ARCADE games are for those machines in the arcade.
VIDEO games are all of them.

So this list if for all time VIDEO GAMES.

Yeah... I know Fox, it's just so easy to let a dumb electronic box do all the work for you ..in it's own half-assed fashion. God help you if you have to put up with real people.. sitting right next to you. You might even have to learn some manners & diplomacy to go with your gaming!

I exaggerate.. as the present culture works against it too, but the real pleasures of this sort of thing seperates the sheep from the goats & the serious gamer from the dilitante... IMHO.

BTW..there was an article in today's Omaha World Herald on that place you mentioned in Paxton.. Andu. You might still get to meet me there for a little 8-Ball.. but not any damned $100 a game stuff.

Ole's Bar & Grill??? (I think that's the name???) Great Place to stop and eat after a long day at Big Mac. My wife, the tree hugger and furry animal lover that she is, was not impressed with the collection there.

For all of the atmosphere there, it is NOT a good place to lose a bunch of money playing pool though

. Though I do play a mean game of Foosball (Kicker for you Europeans

).

On topic, there's a company that sells alot of the old wargames, I have the link somewhere scribbled down. It's called Finegames, and it has a pretty big selection of stuff to choose from. I picked up copies of War at Sea, Third Reich and Midway from there for around $80.

Also, to gripe at the Gamespy people, where was Pitfall on your stinking list??? Harry was a great hero, and jumping on alligator heads and dodging scorpions was pretty cool.

Cooler than Mario ever was.
