I personally do not dislike an Orc God worshipped for technology (I always loved the Bloodaxes in 40K most of all) but Culture?? OK, even greenskinz do have culture - they don´t have to worship gods for DaVinci´s Mona Lisa, but for cavepaintings

and sacrifising gobbos or snotlings (jummy, snotlings - you gotta try 'em roasted with BBQ-sauce)
To bring it to a point I like the Idea abou technology, culture, war gods etc. better then the religion system we got now. But you all forgot maybe that we already have this in the civics where we have a religion branch. It could better be implemented there I think.
So I would stick with the idea of having every civ automatically discovering it´s gods with a given tech (but that would need real good balancing because I think a statereligion gives your civ a huge boost). But that way we would need more and I don´t really know if I like the idea that you can not spread your religion to others - and is it possible that a religion dislikes (Diplomacybonus) some others more than the rest (Orcs like chaos better than elves etc.) So we get certain constellations of factions, but than we need the factions to be nearly the same size (number of civs) and which civs (like the norse) are "neutral".
You see: religion is a really tough topic, and we need to think about this once again (or maybe I should just re-read what people wrote about it before here in the thread)
