~~Weltpolitik I~~

Alred Hernandez, Minister of Defence of Canada, had been working day and night to find out where the liberal separatist newspaper Le Canada was being published. He didn't manage to find the underground basement where it was done, but he did caught something else almost equally important..

"I've got a nice surprise for you", said Alfred Hernanzed with a happy smile when he met Prime Minister George McGay on early spring 1834.

"There can't be anything nice in the curretn situation!" said George with a sad tone. He had failed to destroy the Le Canada newspaper, and now liberalism was growing and his masters in Britain might not like it.

"Oh, but there is, sire! You see.. we have caught none other than Pierre Turgeon himself!" Alfred cried out.

"Pierre Turgeon? THE Pierre Turgeon? Leader of the separatist movement, publisher of the Le Canada newspaper?" asked George, and a happy smile appeared on his face.

"Indeed. The same Pierre Turgeon!" answered Alfred.

That's when monsieur Turgeon, surrounded by several guards, was escorted into the hall. Turgeon looked at the Prime Minister with great hatred glowing in his eyes. McGay answered the look with even angrier one.

"Kill him!" he suddenly cried out.

"Sire! We cannot kill him without a trial! We would give them a martyr! They would start worshipping Turgeon as if he was their God!"

"They cannot worship him.. if they don't know he is dead!" responded McGay. "Tell the officials of Ottawa report him missing, and that authorities will do their best to find whatever happened to him! Perhaps make claims that there had been an accident of some sort.. they shall never know that we killed him!"

"If you insist", said Alfred. He found it hard to accept this unauthorized execution.

***

Next week Le Canada wasn't published. It seemed like McGay had pulled out the unexpected and destroyed the movement by destroying Pierre Turgeon.

A month passed by. The snow was starting to melt and spring took over the cold vast Canadian land, when the next issue of Le Canada was being published.

Alfred was called to the PM's chambers. As he entered, George was pale as a sheet. He tried to say something but he couldn't. He was in shock.

TURGEON EXECUTED WITHOUT TRIAL! GEORGE McGAY IS NOW A MURDERER!

The newspaper cried out. Whoever was Turgeon's follower, he had - one way or another - found out the truth about Turgeon. And it had taken only a month.

"How.. how is this possible?" asked McGay, not understanding anything.

"Someone leaked. Who knows.."

"And now they have a martyr.."

"I warned you didn't I.."

"But who could have published this!"

"Anyone. When a martyr is killed for his cause, it's like attracting bees with honey. Another one always tries to make his life meaningful by taking his position."

"They will start a mass movement against us.."

"We will raise an army.."

"Our armies might be on their side"

"..with Brittish help!"

"Ahh.. I know what you are saying Alfred. You think I should call the British.."

"Sir, I used to serve in the Brittish army when I was young! And altough I quite frankly don't have nearly as much symphaties towards them as you do, I have to admit that they are one of the most capable and efficient armies in the world. With their help, no military movement could rise against us!"

"Yes. I always had it as an option, but I didn't want to use it. I didn't want to let them know.."

"After this, the whole world knows", said Alfred, holding the newest issue of Le Canada in his lands.

"Yes. I suppose there is nothing left to do than to call the British.."

From Canada
To Britain:
Would you perhaps be able to send some armies to help us against this increasingly growing mass movement against the crown?

To: Canada, Britain
From: Russia

Your discrimination against the Quebecoise is not justified. Le Canada has the right to be published.

From Canada
To Russia:
This is not about discrimination against the French-Canadian people - or frogs, as we like to call them. We just cannot allow frogs to publish an anti-British newspaper.

From the New York Weekly Post:

A THOUSAND ESCAPED SLAVES MASSACRED IN LOUISIANA!

Yesterday- The day began unusally quiet, but ended in the greatest amount of bloodshed ever witnessed in the state of Lousiana. 1,027 slaves, who had been forced to work upwards of 12 hours per day, six days per week, planned and executed an attempt to cross the Mexican-American border. Little did they know that a hundred vigilante slave-owners await them at the border, only to arrest them and bring them to New Orleans.

In New Orleans, the slaves were blind-folded, lined up and slaughtered, line after line. By the end of the day, the roads ran crimson with the blood of over a thousand men, women, and children.

The people of New Orleans, along with a number of foreigners visting the port there, are horrified at the actions of these vigilantes. Within a day, though, it was discovered that they were armed and trained by the Lousiana state militia. In fact, many of them were members of the militia themselves.

In the days since the massacre, labeled by slaves and sympathizers alike as Black Wednesday, a massive public outcry has been heard throughout the Union. Farmers, merchants, teachers, ship-builders—everyone, it seems, besides the plantation owners have decried the massacre as the worst sin of the American people since its inception.

From the next week’s New York Weekly Post:

POPULAR REVOLT THREATENED

It seems that the Black Wednesday massacre which took place in New Orleans two weeks ago has spelled the end of an era. Congress assembled on Tuesday—six days after the massacre—and condemned the actions. State Assemblies in every state but Oklahoma and Louisiana have gathered to protest the bloody killings. A letter written for and signed by hundreds of slave-owners has condemned the actions as “sinful and disgraceful.” There is much fear throughout the South that slave revolts—not to mention revolts of average citizens—could be the result of the Lousiana State Militia’s actions.

Over one hundred slave owners assembled in Richmond, Virginia this past weekend to free their slaves. They called for massive Slavery Reform. The protesters assembled expressed their desire for laws regarding the treatment of slaves.

So far, the future remains uncertain for the States. No state legislature is willing to pass any major reforms, besides condemnations, and President Morrison has only condemned the murders, while making no statement on the nature of Slavery itself.

IC: Regarding the Louisian Massacre

As President of Mexico, I reaffirm our stated policy of non-interference in American affairs and offer no comment on this incident.

As a human being however I condemn this atrocity, and express my fond wish that this is the nadir of American history, and no further depths are plumbed.

From Britain

There is a distinct possibility of such an action. However, we are much more concerned where this funding is coming from.

From Canada
To Britain:
When we find Le Canada's printing place, we will find the funding for it, I'm sure! But we'd like to use your troops, because we don't know if we can trust ours. There are many frogs in the Canadian army forces..

OOC: A note about the rules. There are many kind of government types under both conservative and liberal governments in the world. I don't think it would be fair to say, for example, that consription would be almost impossible in a liberal society. Conscription, for example, is possible in any society if its used for defensive warfare.

@contempt, sorry for not responding on AIM, I was watching a movie at the time.. but we'll talk again later, and if its important you can always PM me.

OOC: historically, there was no such thing as mass executions of slaves in the south - ever. They would disciplined extremely harshly, but wouldnt be eliminated. The reason is because they were a valuable and expensive form of property for the southern economy.
It would be like setting other property like cotton-fields or equipment on fire.

If there were executions they were relatively much much much smaller. :)

everyone can conscript, however it isnt as effective on liberal nations, specially in foreign wars.

However liberals get more volunteers on wars where national security is trully threatened.

To Czar of Russia:
Fellow brother and head of state. I ask that you allow me to enjoy your company in the upcomming fall festival in Kiev. This wouldnt take too much time from you, and we need to consider somethings that need to be discussed.

Yes...but, historically, the USA wasn't a confederacy. Should I be attempting to follow history?

Oh, and also...the executions weren't carried out by the owners of the slaves. They were carried out by disgruntled, pro-slavery vigilantes.

Well it isnt a US in a civil war style confederacy. Is more like the united states under the articles of confederation (which were the original set of rules prior to the consitituion we all know today)
You dont have to follow history :)
you can have that event as propaganda to encourage reform to get rid of slavery or something :p

*sigh* Yes, I know it is under the Articles of Confederation...believe me or not, I have studied US History. And, yes, the intent was propaganda.
