My vote for other goes to Phoenicia and Bulgaria

Is there an option to hell no, I don't want to see them in?
Because then I give a negative vote: Argentina, Australia, Canada, Gran Colombia, Inuits, Mexico

Yeah, the geographical thing is a good point. Kongo is probably the best choice for a sub-Saharan civ that was nowhere near the Songhai, Ethiopia, or the Zulu.

Still, Nzinga would be a somewhat dodgy choice, whereas Nubia has some badass female leaders who actually ruled all of Kush. Amanirenas defeated the Romans in battle, and she only had one eye. How awesome would that be as a leader screen? Sword, bow, eyepatch. The Ashanti have a potential female leader too. Both the Ashanti and the Nubians have obvious cultural/historical referents that would make good Civ-stuff (for the Ashanti, the Golden Stool, kente cloth, metalworking, talking drums, a sophisticated military system; for Nubia, pyramids, bloomeries, famous skill in archery, the Nile, important trade routes). Kongo had, what, an unusually big city? And a feudal system that was unusual for Africa but fairly similar to contemporary European societies. Cowrie shells, raffia—both hard to build in-game systems around—some good potential UUs, but what else?

Kongo was a powerful force of resistance to European rule, but in a more sophisticated way than the Zulus. They were fairly well known for bringing in other Europeans to fight the ones that were threatening them, and were considerably successful. Nzinga became known throughout Europe for her regional power and dilomatic skills. Conversion to Christianity in Africa started in the Kongo, as did a few influential African sects of Christianity. Their opposition to slavery later on make them fairly unique, and parts of the region were among the last to fall to the Europeans. Add that to what you said and you have a worthy civ.

Also, the Kongolese were rather unusual in that they adopted not only Christianity, but several other European customs and ideas as well, though they re-fit it into their own culture obviously. For instance, they adopted some European titles of nobility - not that they needed it, of course, as they already had their own system of feudalism in place. As for Christianity, they were, so far as I know, the first major African state outside of North Africa and the Ethiopian region to fully adopt Christianity as a state religion of sorts. And other cool things.

I personally don't care much for them - I prefer a few other African civs like the Nubians, Swahili, or Zimbabwe - but I won't deny they have their reasons for being in the game.

To Calculate the female leaders we have
Nubia - Tiye
Vietnam - Trung Sisters (Counts as two! ;) )
Kongo - I am unfamiliar with any female leaders of the kingdom of Kongo.

Who would you choose as a leader for Israel?

Either David or Solomon. They're the obvious choices, in my opinion.
I was thinking David with Jerusalem In the background.
Good?

Ashanti - Yaa Asantewa
Argentina - Eva Peron
Mughals - Nur Jahan (a slight stretch, but she would be in their top three)
Vietnam - Lady Trieu (if not the Trung Sisters)
Wilma Mankiller - Cherokee
Nzinga - Ndongo/Matamba/Kongo (they could put her in an amalgamation civ just because)

I don't know if you were only doing popular civs, but these are options that could plausibly be made into civs and have good female leader choices.

I'd think Solomon would be a more middle-of-the-road choice. I think David would be seen as a more religious figure and some might object. Solomon is seen more as a wise, practical king with a lot less religious baggage. Regardless, most of the history behind either of them would have to come from religious sources, as there isn't a lot of archeological evidence behind either.

Can't believe I forgot her.
But yeah this is for the most popular Civs but others are fine too.

Yeah... I guess so.
I was Imagining Jerusalem in the background with him on the top of a building or something.

I have been lurking around the threads for a while and was wondering. Why no Ukraine?
I heard a discussion a few pages back and was wondering why it doesn't get any notice.

Pre BNW that would have made sense, however Brazil set precedence, post colonial civs are no longer off limits to be considered civs.

I think taking that in account, there's at least, 1 spot for spanish latin america, its going to be either Mexico, Colombia or Argentina. 2 would be overkill.

Fixed that for you.

We ain't going back to Civ2.

what would Israels unique units, ability, building and or improvement be?

Who would you choose as a leader for Israel?

One of those:

David - Solid choice, but nothing more imho
Solomon - A bit more religious than David, probably the best choice
Theodor Herzl - The "Ghandi" syndrome, but certainly the most important modern 'leader' of Israel, probably a far better choice than David Ben Gurion who might be more controversial...
Golda Meir - Solid Choice, female leader

That said, if you want to discuss the ancient-modern Israel topic, it has been done to death, I'm open to doing it again, but not necessarily in this thread. Also, Gunhild (which is just a female name) instead of Margret I of Denmark?

EDIT: I had to laugh that someone again lists up Jeanne d'Arc for a French female leader, when there are many other better options, i.e. Catherine de'Medici.
