I just finished plowing through The Gulag Archipelago for the second time, am starting "The House on the Embankment" by Trifonov (for the first time).

Do you mean the whole of The Gulag Archipelago? I've only been able to find 1st volumes of multi-volume sets, whether at the library or at bookstores. It's very engrossing, and I'd like to read the whole thing at some point in time.

I actually read a somewhat edited version, but it's still pretty long.

I'm currently reading Lord of the Flies

anybody read, did you like it?

One of my favorite classics of all time :) There is lots of symbolism in that book.

I read Silmarrillion, Hobbit and LotR in the german edition and then hobbit in english, but so far i could not get my hands on the unfinished tales od Silmarrillion in english.

Unfinished tales is very, very hard to read... You MUST have read silmarrillion before... I read everything in Swedish :D

Well, I'd say that Unfinished is actually easier, language-wise than the Silmarillion, especially the 2nd and 3rd age stories.

But eh, every single time I read about Tuor's journey in Unfinished, I am reduced to tears ;_; So beautiful.

Man is the Silmarillion heavy reading....

Well, i didnt think so, the bad thing whith unfinished stories is that it's notes everywhere :run: take so much time!!! But i loved the story about Turin turambar, wonder where star wars got their inspiration :mischief:

Hehe. Narn i hin Hurin is the only story from which i REALLY need a break. 12 times in the Silmarillion topped with 5-6 times in the Unfinished tales. I actually ommited it during my last rereading.

But nonetheless, it's a very good story, one with a very classic, mythological feel to it. Tolkien did his homework very well indeed

Just started reading Dune yesterday and sofar its a lot better than I thought it would be.

Well, you're in for a treat. The original Dune book is really something special, certainly one of my fondest sf memories. It's both surprisingly fresh and pleasant to read. And not as boring/stretched as some of the later parts.

EDIT: oh, and btw, after Hesse's short stories I moved on to his "Narcissus and Goldmund". I am reading it for the first time, and my thoughts are basically "why did it take me so long" :)
