Yeah, it's very rarely needed in practice. I studied it some time ago, but not sure I didn't forget it. Remember though, how to play for weak side.
Of course neither of top-10 grandmasters would fail to do it. I've seen even a more difficult variant, where Karyakin mates with just two knights (it's possible when the opponent also has a pawn).

After knowing how all the pieces move, my father teach me how to mate a king, start with two rooks, one queen, one rook, then with two bishop, and I never graduated from that point.

I like the complication and combination in chess during opening and mid game. I just found it incredibly beautiful:

The highlight of my playing competition chess as a teenager was winning with a smother mate.
It was almost as exciting as when the "manager" of my team punched my opponent in the face when he cursed me for not accepting an offer of a draw in a game.
