What do Moria's dwarves eat?

Anyway, I think Tolkien just didn't bother with food. Everywhere in the developed parts of Middle Earth, there is plenty of everything, so men can be heroes and don't care about the damn agriculture. Elves also don't seem to actually work in the fields...

It is written that although the Western parts of Mordor, where the armies are gathering, it quite desolated, the south eastern part is covered with large crop fields, operated by many slaves, to feed the army.

orcs eat lettuce?

orcs eat lettuce?
Orcs eat whatever.

The realy mystery if how anyone eats in Tolkeins world? Except the Hobbits, who are actually described as growing stuff.

The logical answer is of course that the peasants do all the work so that the Great Lords don't have to.

And in Tolkien's world this is Right and Proper, as there is such a thing as a Natural Nobility, meaning there are Natural Serfs. It's only when the freedom of the naturally noble is threatened that it matters. The naturally unfree, like the Orcs, cannot be set free anyway, only killed.

I imagine poeple like the Dunelendings, or the Easterlings, do the real work, and the the Rohirrim/Gondorians/Elves/whatever gloriously noble, ride in, swipe half the crop, and kill anyone who dares to protest. That's the Noble way to do this after all.

It's only opression if Sauron does it! Freedom is wasted on natural slaves (Aristotle), there is no Enlightenment for valets (Voltaire).;)

Still awaiting a good answer...

That's right!

And of course, the Free and Noble all have fair skin, while the evil Southron are black and the evil Easterlings have funny-looking eyes.

I think I remember (from the movie, so I'm not sure it's in the book) that Gimli talked about eating "red meat, right off the bone", he also seemed excited at the mention of "salted pork" in, what I believe, was the extended version of one of the movies. I'd imagine they eat that, beer and I'm sure there's some dwarven delicacies, that only they'd enjoy.

I could be wrong, but I do think they rather enjoy meat. As one should.

The various regions around and beholden to Gondor are described as agrarian in nature and are described in much greater detail in the books as it is the reinforcements from these areas that defeat the Sauron's armies rather than that stupid ghost crap from the movies.

Nice to know that everyone who died in that battle was a waste, as the ghosts could have done it all themselves if Aragon had not decided to visit the beach for a suntan first. "Whats that leader of the army of ghosts that just destroyed a million plus horde of orcs and trolls and are still beholden to be for whatever I want? You want your freedon now? Oh well, I guess its too much to ask for you to do the trivial task of cleaning out Mordor first, we will just send the proles in for that!"

Chinese food.

Those mines go deep. ;)

Dwarves
Since they mainly live underground, Dwarves do not like farming or herding, and they obtain all their food supplies through trade with Elves and Men. As stated in 'Of Dwarves and Men,' the Dwarves have often formed trade relations with Men whereby they exchange the items of their smithcraft in return for food grown by the Men, in a mutually beneficial relationship.

Orcs (Mordor)
The southern part of Mordor, Núrn, was slightly more fertile, and moist enough to carry the inland sea of Núrnen. Núrn was made somewhat fertile because the ash blown from Mount Doom left its soil nutrient rich, thus allowing dry-land farming. Unfortunately, the inland sea of Núrn was salty, not freshwater.

I believe that Mordor also had extensive trade with Harad, Khand and Rhun

All civilizations throughout world history have been self-sufficient in food. Are the dwarves?
