not the sax, either piano or guitar. I think they are the most practical instruments, you will be able to play them in many situations and in many genres of music.

Downtown, I don't really understand this thread.

You're already a musician and you're asking us bozos at CFC which instrument you should play?

There is only one correct answer: whichever instrument intrigues you the most!

And since you are already a musician, I am sure you already know the answer to your own dilemma.

Its more complicated than that. If "what instrument I liked the best" was the only factor, yeah, I wouldn't need to ask anybody. But instruments have oppertunity costs, some are more practical than others, some are easier to learn than others (and many here play the insruments I was considering) etc etc.

Plus, when I ask for advice on CFC, I'm ALWAYS asking people that I know in Real Life as well, and will give their thoughts more weight. Its sometimes good to ask advice from people who are not emotionally invested in any way though.

Its more about evaluating all the pros and cons of each one, and you don't need to know me to be able to do that.

The one I like the best is the Tenor Sax, but for $$$'s sake, I will likely go with the guitar.

Well, good luck with that then! Can't wait to hear you use your new instrument, whatever that might be, guitar or sax. :D

I've always wanted to learn the Sax... just to play the blues... [pimp]

If you start drumming you will become a hot commodity. As I said in a pervious post, I started learning drums. In the first week when I got them in the mail, I was already offered to be in bands, and I didn’t even know how to play. The reason is, there are plenty of people that want to learn guitar and there are plenty of people that want to sing, but drummers are rare. Usually because they are expensive, or they are too loud to practice at certain times if you don’t have a studio. Also being a drummer can be lucrative; my friend who has been playing for over 10 years was offered to be in a cover band in New York City, he would make $400+ per show. Also, drummers always get respect from the ladies ;)

I've been playing drums for a decade, and professionally for the last 3

"I shoulda learned to play the guitar...I shoulda learned to play them drums..."

Since the second one is out, you have to do the first. :p

SAX PWNS

Your never gonna get a chick with piano. Portable instruments are better anyway, if you really like to play. You can bring it anywhere and jump in on the jam. You can't do that with a piano. You don't even need electricity, like you would with a keyboard - so it's a more environmentally friendly instrument?

You need a mic or amplification of some kind if you're playing in a band. Otherwise, your sound gets lost with the guitars and drums.

You and a few guys/chicks with a couple acoustic guitars and a small drum set can do without electricty. I think that's the nicest way to enjoy music. But I understand your professional preformance perspective.

Lisa Simpson ftw

So I had previously settled on learning the guitar....but then I found a 55 dollar used tenor sax here in Arizona, from a guy who I don't think understands how much its worth. Now, if I can't learn the sax, I can at least flip it, which would pay for most of my guitar.

Lisa simpson ftw indeed! hopefully.

I vote acoustic guitar. As a plus you can practice singing to it, and it fits in with nearly all styles of music.

As a youngster I voted to learn the Cello, strictly because of joy of sitting down while playing it in class (probably a poorly thought out justification at the time).
