It should help the US in need, but when it (well, its government) believes the US's government is making a mistake, it should say so.

And BTW, what I said above can be applied to most democracies today.
Kinniken, have you voted to the poll ? I'm just curious which answers you've picked. :D

Personally, I've voted for the 5, the 7 and the 8. :)

Isn't the fact the United States were there to save the world in 1941 a sign of God?

This is a personnal attack and the moderation does nothing! And after that there are still people to believe this forum to not be biased.

5,6,7,8 and 10 I think. 10 is not really necessary, but definitely good. 9 does not prevent a country from being a good ally as long as the differences of interest are limited.

Ok, I'll be careful ;)

BTW, have you stopped answering your PMs? :p

If every country who helped save part of the world from a dictatorship has a God-given right to save the world, the list is going to be huge! We can start by including the Soviet Union, who was crucial in defeating Hitler. Their atheism might be problematic though :p
I guess we can also include France, for enabling the US to become independent and go on to save the world in 1941 ;)

First I'd have to distinguish between an "ally of convenience" and a true ally.

A "good" ally of convenience (Pakistan, USSR in WWII) simply shares a temporary common goal or interest. As soon as that goal is met then the alliance is no more.

A "good" true ally is similar to a true friend. Generally you have a long history between you. You have common beliefs and interests. A true friend will let you know when you're being an idiot but will still be there when things really go bad despite any petty squabbling.

That's why I still believe that the only true allies of the US are its traditional Western ones (UK,France, Canada, etc...). If a non-Western nation (Russia or China for example) rises to prominence and starts trying to project its power then see how fast any of the current minor differences fade and how quickly those nations would stand together.

10 to 1 he lives not too far away from a town or city called Lafayette or Louisville and has no idea why that is.

@Marla

In the poll what does "oppose" mean? Do you mean politically or militarily? Thanks.

There is no such thing as an ally for any country. Your friend today can be an enemy tommrow and vice versa. All nations are out to increase their power, money, and status.

I mean politically of course ! I hardly see how you could consider a country which is in war against the US as an ally of the US ! ;)

Cool. That's what I figured. I just wanted to make sure before I voted that it didn't include shipping arms to and otherwise supporting countries the US was at war with during the actual conflict.

In that case by the definition in my original post I voted 5,7,8,9, and 10.

And I believe all Americas true allies (UK,France,Canada, etc....) fit into these categories.

I do find it odd how many people see France as an ememy of the US. In fact, I find it odd that anyone would see the US and France as anything but allies. Other than Iraq, the USA and France have worked together on pretty much every occasion I can think of, right back to the American revolution.

It's good to see that a good number of Americans here have cited France as an ally.

I don't know if USA has any good allies but We have bought a lot of them. A true ally would be a nation who stay with the USA if this country went bankrupt. I afraid we are guilty of buying a lot of our friends.

At the moment I cannot see France as an ally of America. They are certainly not enemies or anything of the sort but they are not allies. My definition of an American ally in its most simple form is a country that doesn't piss off America.

So you just agree with me. Any country which support the US superiority is an ally of the US. Why when Mr President says it, no one accuses him of trolling and when it's me, everyone reacts ! :(

I'm a victim of mean people.

Because you and him be say different things.
