What is meant by 'The Good Old Days'

Ease up guys, Pillager has a valid point. Some things were better in the past and some things are better in the present. I'm mostly opposed to the views of people like Vote BNP, who see the past as some sort of utopia, where life was just like the show "Leave it to Beaver."

Thank you so much. :p

The above is true, although I would say more was better 'then' than others would say.

I'm not about to argue in favour of increased poverty, or child abuse or whatever. I just think that in significant areas, today's society is worse than it used to be. I honestly don't think greeting visitors with 'FCUK Me' is anything to be proud of. That's just a solid, conservative (little c, Col) view. Nothing wrong in that. Unless it breaks an EC directive I haven't yet heard about... :p

Thats Ok, P. No offence taken .... ;)

I do think that ones views of the past depend on what you were doing then.

To quote someone or other - You've never had it so good. :p

There was one thing, that makes the good old days look so much better. We were younger. And it was our turn to annoy older generations. Now we pay our dues. ;)

Of course you do realize that it is not just the old who believe in this sort of thing, the BNP is full of young people as well who believe likewise.

Yes. I am sure you are right there BNP and it is to the shame of the rest of the country. If these young people had had a better education then they would not be susceptible to the fringe right's fanciful ideas about the past.

As I stated in a previous post, the BNP is also the fastest growing political party in the UK; whereas all the others parties are declining in number.

Peri, is it by sheer coincidence that you manage to respond to every single one of my posts?

Obviously.
Unless of course it is a BBC led conspiracy to discredit the far right.

In the good old days, it was illegal for my mom and dad to be married to each other. What joyous memories I have of the police following us around! It's like a ray of sunshine out of my past...

I think the BNP sounds like a good thing to me. It's almost like a British Republican party! :) I do hope it does well in their next election, against whatever other party is popular (socialist?)

It was when people didn't tend to swear and fight in public.

I'm not going to say that the 'Good old days' were better than today per se. But I do say that there are some things that were a lot better then than they are now. A fantastically low crime rate being probably chief amongst them.
Thats actually a myth. Most crimes take place against poor people, something which wasn't recorded or even noticed at the time. People left their doors unlocked and were robbed all the time.

The modern media has changed our view of crime, not changed the crime rate.

And the good old days when people used to duel to the death in public... a more civilized time perhaps? Or when swear was considered damn & hell, both used liberally in public... just not the public that makes it into our view of history.

Yeah... except the BNP is honest about their goal for society :D

From a very very low base.

Please enlighten me on the BNP's policies for education.healthcare, monetary policy, legal reform, child protection, welfare, tax reform.

Thats right blame the darkie, brilliant.

Sorry to break the illusion, but the BNP will never challenge the Labour or Tory hold on ther UK's government.

I would rather vote for the loony party.

What time period are you talking about here? I don't think when people refer to the 'good old days' there was much dueling in public happening. As I said above, the 'good old days' refers to a time when members of today's society were alive, not the 19th Century.

If you are referring to the time period I am, mostly about the 1950s, a massively lower crime rate is not at all a myth.

Come on, does'nt anybody realize, that the "good old days" were "good" for a miniscule minority who had all the privileges and power; that the common man was as downtrodden as he is now and the value of a man was only how much he would work.

Here too, my grandparents keep harking back to how "good" their times were.
Obviously, they were of the Upper castes, they had jobs, they were educated, and they could treat the lower castes with as much contempt as they pleased.

It is always the case in every country.. everything new is despised until it becomes "the old";)

Just think, one day, these will be the 'Good Old Days' for a lot of us.

The 1950's- rationing, the no Irish or blacks signs on shops and hotels, the locking up of unmarried mothers in institutions, two tier education system that penalised you for ever if you had one bad day when you were 11, women given no oppoertunities to do anything other than cook and clean. An establishment striving to keep the oiks out of the system.

Great times
