What is the answer to this?

What number do you get?

BIDMAS rules that Addition comes before Subtraction.

Nah, they have equal precedence, as do division and multiplication. It should really read:

B
I
DM
AS

When you have operations of equal precedence you operate from left to right.

Alternatively you can think of it as being BIDMSA, which somewhat circumvents this issue.

Seven, from my memory: first multiplication and division, then the addition and subtraction in left-right order. So, 6-0+1.

How is this even debatable? We weren't asked to plug it into a calculator and find the answer (which depending on how the calculator operates I suppose could give some funkiness.) It was written out and we were asked what the answer is. The rules dictate the answer is 7, period.

Why is this even thread worthy?
Even a math-challenged person like me got the right answer (7). I suspect the OP is answering a skill-testing question in order to win a fantastic prize, and now that we've answered it for him, he needs to tell us how much of a share we all get. :p

All of those are pretty indisputable, except 48/2(9+3)=288. That one is just ambiguous for ambiguities sake, particularly since it's usually written with the utterly unhelpful ÷ symbol.

This thread is terrible because it just reminded me how much I miss ParadigmShifter :(((

Do people read tabloids, then? I just look at the pictures, before using it to light the fire. Or other things.
I don't buy the damn things in the first place. Bad enough there are millions of people who make their owners rich for lies and hate.

10+10*0=10
This is a thing? :(

Tabloids aren't based on hate, but tittle tattle, i.e. Who is Celebrity A bonking this week, generally they don't lie about these things incase they get sued. Or they read them for the Sport, or to find out whats pn Telly.

To be honest you have an extreme and unbalanced view of why people read tabloids.

Of course they do run the odd story that has a headline that is clearly misleading, but broadsheets are not beyond this.

But it seems that people like to express faux outrage against tabloids and there readers, I don't buy tabloids myself, or even broadsheets these days, but some of there articles on line can be interesting, even some by the daily mail, but I am not prejudiced about where I read my news from, as long as it can be sued for libel and is subject to the press complaints committee.

Anyway this is well of topic but I admire your faux outrage.

No sane person would IMO. But when I see one lying around, and I don't want to be accused of staring aimlessly into space (at the dentist etc), very often I'll look at the pictures...and wonder.

Sadly, some people assume that if a expression ends with *0, the answer is automatically zero. :(

Spoiler Proof :

I don't think it is ambiguous, just that some people just look at the problem wrong. If it was supposed to be 48/(2(3+9)), as some people seem to assume it should be read, it would had been written that way, or with the 48 on top of the rest of the expression. Because it wasn't written that way, the answer is clearly 288
