What is your first language?

I speak American English.
My first words were in Spanish apparently because of my Salvadorian nanny.

I used to know many languages when I was little because my baby sitters were immigrants from various countries. My mom thought it was funny that I greet her in a totally different language everyday.

First language is Farsi/Persian.

Learned French (France, not Quebecois), English (thank you, Cartoon Network), Old Persian (self taught) and L33T (net taught) in that order

Planning on self teaching Pahlavi and Avesta over the summer.

First, and only, language is English. It is quite a good first language as I can go almost anywhere and someone will know what I am saying.

First language is The American English Dialect.(as it should be called)

I'm learning Spanish. It is a fun language.

English is my first language. I've just started taking spanish this year but these high school classes don't get very in depth, or challenging. I'll probably only be able to form a few basic sentences after a year of work. I would of prefered to take German but apparently theres a shortage of German-speaking teachers in my state so it was either spanish or french.

Finnish. Learned English in school, but I only _really_ learned it when I started reading novels in English (fantasy and sci-fi weren't readily available in Finnish back then) and playing RPGs (real ones, like MERP, Rolemaster etc.). So, it was actual need that made me learn the language.

Since I've studied English at the university level, my most common mistakes are typos, rather than real mistakes (although I'm certainly not perfect)...

My native language is Swedish. I learnt English in school.

Early on I had absolutely atrocious pronunciation, but sticking to things that show up in writing, my chief problems were simple vs progressive, and to recall when and when not to append an 's' to present tense verbs. I suppose I still screw up the later on a regular basis.

1st language is Australian English.

Accents make a big difference. I went to america for a year about 8 years ago, and i was teased because of my accent. Then when i got back to australia, i was teased for having a different accent to everyone else.

My first language is german - got my english from computer games (back in the C 64 days, there were no localized games), school, being in England and Ireland a few times, english books (I allways read english writing authors in the original language), english movies (same as with books), the internet, reading papers, having to write some etc...

German, Swiss-German to be exact :)

English, Antipodean/Kiwi english is my mother tongue.
3 years of German at school, so I can get by in germany and that's about it.
A few word and phrases of French and Spanish, not alot.
Did Latin and Ancient Attic Greek at varsity, which taught me more about my own language than 5 years of high school english did.

My first language is English, second is probably Tamil, I can speak decentish French and a few words of German.

Just curious to know what your first language was and how you learned english. How did you put your words together when trying to speak english?

For example: First language is French. I would say 'no please' when I was offered a drink instead of saying 'no thankyou' speaking in english that is :mischief:

First language is Russian. I learned English in school and picked it up from other kids.
