I posted something similar to this before Vista came out and now I'm curious as to how Vista changed the results. If you dual-boot please chose the option that is used most often. If they are used equally then pick your favorite.

XP, I hate vista (my computer probably isn't powerful enough to run it anyway).

Every time I write a Windows program at work I need to jump through tons of hoops to get it to run on the Vista machines.

I use Vista at home and XP at work, but I voted Vista since that's my "preferred" OS (i.e. the one I choose to use rather than the one I'm forced to use).

Ubuntu Linux at the moment, though I've had Debian, Fedora, Knoppix, Xubuntu and OpenSUSE running at various times over the past year. Only black spot is I have to use XP at work.

XP. Going to stay that way until 'Windows 7' comes out in 2010.

Windows XP. Gonna stick with it unless I buy a new laptop in the future.

right now I'm playing with kubuntu 8.10 and I'm liking it so far. I use Linux typically of the ubuntu variety though I have tried almost all major distros.

XP. I was considering a switch to Vista this month, but now that Ive replanned my computer purchase to late January/February, Im probably going to stick with XP until Windows 7.

Why not just install XP on your next computer then?

Because most laptops already come with an OS pre-installed and XP usually costs extra now. That, and most often, its not worth arguing with the manufacturer about a refund of the pre-installed system.

I bought XP for $1 :dunno:

Student discounts > MSFT

I actually own three copies of XP, two of Office, and some random crap I didn't even need or want, but I mean for $1/CD you can't say no to... anything, I guess.

Point being, go be a student and scam some cheap software.

XP. Incompatibilities between Vista and Civ3/Halo, as well as generally poor stability, even with the SP1 beta, convinced me to switch back, and my enjoyment of my computer went up drastically after switching from Vista to XP. There's no way I'm ever going back to Vista. I probably will try the Windows 7 beta, but knowing how cheap I am, I doubt I actually will purchase Windows 7 as an upgrade unless it's really amazing, which means I'll probably be using XP as my primary OS until 2012. At which point I might just wait for Windows 8 (or 7.1, depending on what they call it) to come out.

I have been using Mandriva Linux 2009.0 a decent amount recently, but Windows is still definitely my preferred OS for most things. I doubt I'll use Linux as my primary OS anytime soon, due to hardware compatibility if nothing else (I've yet to had a Linux OS agree with my hardware as much as XP, and some distros just don't agree with my hardware at all). But really, even if hardware compatibility weren't an issue, I can't see any Linux OS supplanting XP as my choice OS in the near future - other than the terminal, XP does nigh everything just as I'd want it. Well, and rearranging icons on the taskbar, but there's no reason to wait for Windows 7 for that.

PCLinuxOS, primarily. I have a partition with Mandriva 2009 just so I can experiment a little with KDE4.

I use XP as my desktop at work (corporate desktop), but I do all my real work telnetted in to assorted Linux servers (using command-line only!) (I know somebody in the systems shop who got arond the corporate XP desktop, and has Linux on his work PC. I need to talk with him....)

Ubuntu linux with a little gentoo on the side and windows xp on a virtual machine and dual boot for the times wine wont cut it.

When I got my laptop I immediately just wiped the whole hard drive and put Ubuntu on it.

very low insight from OP to not provide multiple options option - I have all 4 on your list and more than that.

Read the first post. The idea was to get a true representation of how often each are used as the primary OS. That can't be done if everyone is using multi-choice for something they use once a week.

XP on my primary machine. My new laptop came with vista (and forget trying to argue XP in), so is presently in the process of switching to the 7 beta. If I'm going to be stuck with a ressource hog of an OS, then at least it will be the latest ressource hog of an OS.
