What Taylor Swift thinks about 2017, and what it teaches us about Activism

So do something. Take action. You still have the same freedom you did last year, all the more reason not to waste it.
I am doing things. That's my whole point.

Like what?

And if this has inspired you to take positive action why does it necessarily have to ruin everyone's year?

I can only stand in awe at the amount of privilege you must have in order to not have to worry about the political situation affecting you personally.

Don't be pretentious, I'm indeed blessed, becoming a blubbering mess over this guy won't solve anything.

This whole thing is embarrassingly Americentric. The year the Asian tsunami killed tens of thousands of people people were still allowed to say it was their best year ever with no criticism whatsoever.

Swift's music is godawful but good on her for going for hers and celebrating her life, no one lies on their deathbed wishing may spend more time obsessing about those in power.

It's all so ridiculous for people to give this guy so much power their minds. 10 years ago evil corporations ran the world, in 10 more years evil corporations will run the world. Trump or no Trump there's going to be Roundup in your Cheerois. Get a life y'all

Tldw, Hillary wins chop wood carry water, Trump wins chop wood carry water. Don't be a victim of your own mind

Don't be pretentious

I don't think you're using that word correctly.

Well, apparently unlike you I actually care about what this guy is doing to the country and to the world. Sorry not sorry about that.

Trump is an idiot but Dems (and left-wing extremists as well) freak out way too much. Objectively not much has changed.

It's the same as it was under GWB. People in this forum were comparing him to Hitler, and not sarcastically, were claiming American democracy was dead and Bush would nuke the planet. Then Obama won and ruled for 8 years and also bombed foreign countries with catastrophic effect, conducted assassinations of American citizens and basically did everything Bush was vilified for except sending in ground troops (which granted was wise, but as far the middle east is concerned not that different).

Now Trump is obviously going to install the Great American Reich, minorities will be shipped to extermination camps, and the Dems won't even be allowed to run. Doom doom doom! And the only weapon of the resistance are rants on social media.

Well, they were certainly right about that, even if we didn't fully realize it at the time.

Hitler was a left-wing liberal commie!

I had a terrible year but that doesn't mean other people had the opposite.

I care, but I'm not going to let it ruin my life. Modern left-wing young people seem to be in a contest of who is the most outraged and miserable, it's not healthy, it's victimy, it's passive. Learn the lesson, do better next time, get on with it. When Dems get a candidate people can't help it talk about every 5 minutes, theyll win

I made bank this year, off of people's fear. I predicted btc would rise based on insecurity in the US and it's dollar. There will always be people making money off people's fear. Every clickbait article about Trump is doing that. And people act like reposting and getting their blood pressure up is activism.

Note : I'm not liking the fact that you had a terrible year, I'm sorry about that, just the sentiment that the world is bigger than any one person and our emotions

That's just what you're seeing on social media. I spend most of my time online complaining bitterly about the Republican Party, but I don't spend my every waking moment worrying about them, either.

To my mind people are only able to behave like that because they haven't yet faced the inherent absurdity of existence and how this absurdity isn't just a theoretical assessment but shows its face in all there is if you are only willing to look close enough. Especially including their outrage. (which is not to say that the outrage was on principle illegitimate or wrong - just absurd, two very different but often conflated things)
It is kinda like they still believe in Santa.

But okay, I can also play a bit smaller than that, so here is another reason: If those people were as critical about themselves as they are about the world - what they are even doing, what their motivation even really is, what is even going on inside of them and what this even means - things would look very different to them. But instead, they only look elsewhere and use it to nourish their small own petty all-too primitive urges. Urges everyone has. But the difference is to see that and to know what you are doing. So that you may also know, if you are doing it wrong.

Yeah I'm with Swift, 2017 was a good year.
