Meanwhile, I'm in game number four of Fallen Enchantress. First two were very short sacrifices on the altar of learning how not to start. Third one was given over to learning just how freaking long a campaign this is going to be. I played a long time but then recognized that I had not really gotten very far and that my opening choice of king and kingdom really didn't fit the way I wanted to play at all. So, looking at a very very long path to trod I opted to start over with a custom leader that is a better fit rather than continuing to compromise with what I had chosen.

Now I'm ready.

So, I got waxed. But at least I did it my way. Which of course turns out not to work. But there ya go.

Must have balance, it turns out.

I've taken a bunch of the Roman's cities. They keep trying to take it back but they don't have gunpowder units and I do!

I defeated Rome.

Then I nuked the Persians while they were still stuck using crossbowmen.

Oooooookay. I've been restraining myself from asking, but I have to know...

What settings are you playing on here?

Settler difficulty. I think I used the Continents map, and the default map size and speed.

There's nothing like the smell of nuke in the morning  Like Tim said about Persian crossbowmen were asking for it ;)

I got a domination victory.

Maybe next time I should play on a harder difficulty.

X-Wing Tour V Mission 17A really blew (fly A-Wing cover for 2 groups of 2 corvettes attacking an Imperial convoy of 3 CRVs plus 6 Freighters, guarded by 6 TIE-Bombers and an apparently inexhaustible supply of Gunboats).

A-Wings may be nippy, but their lowish firepower and nearly ineffective shields/armour means they kinda suck vs. CRVs, and take a very long time to kill FRTs as well, especially while being harassed by GUNs (which my 2 wingmen didn't seem to be very good at fighting). I must have failed this mission a couple of dozen times (4-5 days' worth of 4-5 attempts before rage-quitting), before I finally managed to beat it just now.

Turned out the trick was for me to protect the Rebel CRVs pretty much single-handed (attacking the TIE-Bombers, and then the Transport that attacks with Proton torps), then distract/ harass the Imperial CRVs until ours knocked them down -- which had to be done before instructing my wingmen to target the FRTs, while I kept the incoming GUNs away from them.

My final kill-count was comparatively low (12/25: 7/10 TIE-Bs, 2/4 GUNs, 1/6 FRT, 1 TRN, 1 Shuttle, 0 CRVs), but by this point I didn't care...

Has anybody else found Civilization IV to be a bit crashy on Windows 10? It keeps going down on me for seemingly no reason.

Runs fine on Win 7!

It's not really so much a problem as long as I remember to save frequently. Ahem....

Since i am on the verge of getting a new gaming rig, which will perforce be a Win10 machine, I am ignoring this discussion.

Windows 7 blocking updates for your processor? Or just because of end-of-support?

I am using Win 7 hoping for a less invasive option when it losses support.

whatcha gonna get?

I've been pricing, and for the first time in ...hmmmm... well, a couple decades anyway... I am going to get a fully built rig rather than buying parts, and they all come with Win10 installed.

It's weird. Fully assembled gaming rigs have gotten so cheap compared to components that people are actually buying them for the parts.

Current rig, with Win7, is still working really good, so I'll be passing that on to one of my sons.

Depends on what I can catch on sale, but something that exceeds the recommended requirements for X4 is the baseline. There would just be too much involved in upgrading this one.

You could always look into Linux and see if Wine works for the games you play.

I tried Linux briefly but it involved too much command-line for me. Command-line is my nemesis. :(

In my early days of computer gaming every new game involved working out the settings to make your memory management system work with a minimum of crashes, working out the settings for your sound card, building what amounted to an interface for your video drivers, and putting all that into a run time package with the necessary components of your operating system that would then load itself and autorun the program. Computers didn't have the capacity to run a state of the art game program with the full operating system in place, usually. Tweaking in the emulation is a very similar process, and I just had my fill of it several decades ago.
