They sell the inferior DOS version of SimCity 2000, too. :(

I've gotten the Windows 95 version working on my Windows 10 PC by using a custom installer. The only problem with the game is with the animations but that problem has always existed.

At one point he said the controls were natural and mastered in minutes and here I am looking through the 200 page manual after 20 hours in the game trying to figure out basic commands like heal Ian.

Many years ago when I first tried to play Fallout I gotten stuck at the beginning of the game. When I asked for help the responses I got were angry, that I was too stupid to play the game because I didn't read the manual. The copy I had was a budget release that didn't have a manual.

I used that custom installer too. I don't have any problems running the game on my computer unless I mistakenly pick the African Swallow speed.

It took me 4-5 tries to get out of the rat cave at the beginning.

I forgot one other thing that was massively screwed up with my copy of FO1 - all of the animations were slide shows. I'm not sure where I got the game from because it was a free giveaway. I think it was Steam.

While cleaning up a shelf I found a copy of Tropico 3 in a case. It has a Wal-Mart sticker on it so I must've gotten it a long time ago (the Wal-Mart here stopped selling PC games years ago). I think I should try it.

Path of Exile: my lvl-80 Cyclone Gladiator
We should do some maps together in metamorph. It would be a quick way to level and gain gem experience too. I think my Frost blades jugg and your glad would work well together.

The Necromancer is Standard, the Gladiator is Metamorph. The Necromancer still has her full-respec available, but so far I'm inclined to leave well enough alone. I think the Cyclone Gladiator will be my Delver. As PhroX says, Cyclone makes you immune to Stun, but it seems to also grants you some kind of pseudo-Phasing. He sails right through bad guys while he's doing his dervish thing.

Sorry, I didn't mean to imply that all Witches or Necromancers are poor at pressing forward, just that mine is. I don't use Meatshield, Feeding Frenzy or Deathmark. Feeding Frenzy just seems like overkill. More damage?? Sure, what the hell... I'm thinking about trying out Deathmark. I assume it was intended for targeting Bosses and other thorns in the side, but you could also use it to reroute the whole rugby team when you don't want them to simply follow you. I was also thinking about "Golem Commander" on the Passives web to get another Golem and make it an even 24 Minions (also - "70% increased effect of buffs granted by your golems" - more damage!).

On Summon Raging Spirit: I think it might be a bit overpowered, although I haven't exactly done a lot of testing.
  • They're "fire and forget." The Spirits proceed to whatever point you target and then auto-target and pursue enemies from there, based on their own detection radius (e.g. well off the screen, as far as the player is concerned). It's unclear to me whether mobs attacked by Raging Spirits are pulled by the caster or only by the Raging Spirit.
  • You can get up to 20 of them at once. I use Spell Echo so I only need to fire it 10 times.
  • They count as Minions, so I presume they get all of the bonuses from the Passives Web. I use Infernal Legion on them, which reduces their lifespan by only a bit (that is, they're clearly benefiting from the Life Regen and Life Leech that my Minions get, offsetting the damage they receive from being on fire). Anyway, their limited lifespan hardly matters, since you can just keep summoning new ones basically forever.

I would definitely recommend Feeding Frenzy - maybe not for SRS due to how they already behave, but put it on your zombies and/or Carrion Golems, depending on which you are wanting to hit things more. It's not really about the damage boost (although that is always nice), it's about the increased move speed (which applies to all minions, not just the linked ones [the FF buff that you get when a supported minion hits something applies to all minions, though the supported ones get more]) and particularly the AI change - FF makes them much more aggressive at seeking out things to kill. Similarly, Meat Shield is great at getting minions to stay close to you - a defensive wall of zombies is a worthwhile option if you have plenty of damage elsewhere, and it works well with more support oriented Spectres who you don't really want charging off and dying (I use the ape chieftains from Act 2 to give me and my minions frenzy charges...).

As I said, I haven't tried SRS (at least recently) but the general impression I get is that they are actually the weakest of the undead type minions. Which is not meant a knock on SRS, but more to illustrate just how brokenly good zombies, spectres and skellies are right now....

And yeah, definitely get the Golem Commander wheel on the tree if you're running a Carrion Golem and you're in that part of the tree. Two of them is great and adding even more flat damage to your SRS is always good.

I don't know if I ever worked out what was going on with my user name and in-game chat. I noticed a tab in the chat window that I think was called "whispers", that I had greyed out.

I can't remember atm how I have my minions slotted with support gems, but I'll give the three "behavioral" gems a try, if only to play around and see what happens.

Incidentally, it's the speed of the Zombies that I think makes them OP. If it were me, Zombies would be slow and inaccurate, but strong and durable, while Skeletons would be quick but fragile. I wouldn't change Specters, they're the 'wild card' whose abilities vary with the original creature. I think they work pretty well.

Raging Spirits are definitely the weakest of the minions, but they have some utility and they stack up alongside everything else. I definitely wouldn't use Spirits instead of one of the others. And, frankly, once my other minions are in the fray, there's not much for me to do.

I also have a jewel that increases the damage, recharge speed, and maybe also the AoE of the Zombies' Slam attack - 'cause they don't create enough mayhem already - and there's a jewel socket en route to Golem Commander.

You should click that "whispers" button and make it active. It toggles on and off. Also look at your notifications tab under options. You should check them all. After that, hit "S" to open the social window. At the bottom enter Exile_on_Mainstreet into the invite friend space and click. That should send me an invite and I will then show up listed among your friends in the social window. I should not have to be online for you to invite me and I don't have to actually accept. I will be on later today and will let you know! If I log on while you are in game, you will get a notice.

Yeah, you aren't missing anything in Fallout 2. And it's even worse playing it on a modern system since you get hit with random encounters out the wazoo due to the devs programming the game to base the percentage chance of random encounters on how much RAM you have available. At least that's what I read when I was trying to figure out why I couldn't travel between two locations without having at least ten to fifteen (not an exaggeration) random encounters.
Actually the plot and the sandbox style blew my head, and on Windows XP it runs nicely (which is why I keep that partition…) but I have seen the awful random encounters bug and it made the game boring rather fast.

I kinda wish they would make a Fallout strategy game (either RTS or turn-based) focusing on the war between the NCR and Brotherhood of Steel that is talked about in some of the background material. That could be fun.

Well, there's the old Fallout: Tactics games, but they never hooked me as strongly as the RPGs did.

When heavily modding games, there's often that awkward moment where you find a brilliant mod that you absolutely must include in your setup and go to download it...only to realize you already have it.

I mean something like Command & Conquer or a more military focused version of Civilization. Hell, even the Total War style might work. Could you imagine defending The Hub or Junktown from an epic Super Mutant siege or something?

I wasn't much of a fan of Fallout Tactics either. Apparently neither were the developers or Bethesda as that game has been declared non-canon to the Fallout lore so it can be safely ignored going forward.

I for one would contribute a few thousand bottle caps towards this.

@EgonSpengler Got it and we are now connected such that we can communicate. :)

I've been playing Tropico 3. It's fun, except the resolution keeps resetting itself to 1024x768 and I have to fix it every time.

EDIT: I found a copy of East India Company on my shelf and thought I'd try it out again. Except that the installer phones-home during activation. And the publisher stopped supporting it. So even though all the game files are on the disc, I'm locked out of a game that I legitimately bought. That's always fun.

I've heard Port Royale is far better anyways. And I have that game on GOG. And it actually works. So I'll just keep playing that instead.

I have been playing League of legends and hearthstone. Also War of Omens card game. Runeterra card game opens tonight for people who already have accounts and tomorrow for everyone.

I've thought about making use of a Steam controller, but currently I don't need a doorstop and access to the appropriate orifice on a Valve executive isn't likely to present itself so I can't think what I would do with one.

On a much better front (X3), my raggedy marines have concluded their first successful boarding operation, reminding me that running boarding ops with rag tag marines is a sucker bet. The plus side, I sold the prize for 170,000 credits. The minus side, probably not comprehensive; lost three marines, two of which were worthless meatbags provided by Argon command but one of which I hired for something in the neighborhood of 150,000 credits; since even among my better quality marines engineering skill is in pretty short supply they blasted the prize near to flinders in the course of capturing it, leading to an annoying workout with the repair laser just to collect the meager amount for it that I got; boarding operations are so intense that remote operation of traders has to be suspended for the duration, so even when a boarding op somehow breaks even the opportunity cost is probably more than I want to think about.

But hey, my surviving marines picked up a few points of fighting skill, which was enough to max one of them out. Now if I invest a huge pile of credits into training other skills for that one at least my credits aren't likely to be turned into a worthless cloud of red mist floating away into space.
You should pick up the mods that let you turn captured enemy pilots to marines and the one that lets you train them (at a price) whilst in your ships. Makes boarding much more viable.
