What's the Story Behind Your Username?

Joe, why aren't you sporting a Snoopy avatar?

I have little imagination for names. Cutlass was the car I owned at the time I started using the net. So I just kept using the name.

In one of the "Prelude to Dune" books there was a character with this name. I signed up to CFC to post in a Dune Mod thread and for some reason decided to choose a name consistent with the theme of the thread.
Now I've started using it for most of my non-essential usernames or videogame characters.

Wouldn't 'whomp you' be more in line with your intent than 'whomp us'?
This gave me a good laugh.

My name was inspired by a combination of my interest in ancient Rome, Norse mythology, and the Lalande scenario of Civilization II: Test of Time. It has absolutely nothing at all to do with the ancient city of Ur.

The Uridians are one of the four human factions in the Lalande scenario (there are three alien factions). When I used male leaders, the name I opted for was some form of the name "Valerian." When I used a female leader, I still wanted to have the name start with "V" and stream of consciousness led me to think of the Valkyries. So after experimenting with a few variations, I settled on "Valka." So "Valka D'Ur" means "Valka of the Uridians."

Generic name I used for a monk I made in Guild Wars 1 circa 2005 and it stuck, although usually it shorted to LC or the phonetic Elcee.

You don't wanna know what people have guessed "LC" stands for over the years, I actually kept a running list that is partially NSFW.

Back in 2000, I lost access to my Yahoo! account and needed to create a username. Taking an idea from a friend, I simply borrowed the name of a song title -- a contemporary Christian song about waking up to a fresh start every morning. I've used it since, even during my anti-religious years. Most everyone thinks it has something to do with coffee because I'm known to drink a pot a day.

From the Latin:

miles, militis, noun, 3rd declension, masculine - soldier (pronounced mee-layz)

gregarius:, adjective - of/belonging to the flock

Ergo - Soldier of the flock, i.e., buck private, cherry grunt, FNG.

First used on the Total War forums, thus the Latin reference to a military rank.

Owain Glyn dwr is my namesake. My parents chose the anglicized version of my name. Was a bit of a Welshophile in my early high school days. First used it for a character in Guild Wars 1, and have been using it ever since.

 That stinks... I have always looked at it/you as some kind of sword/sabre :D .

He may not have been consulted when his name was given to him.

Perhaps his parents are religious.

(Edit: My comment depends on his having said "given" name, which I swear was initially in his post, then ninja edited out?)

I was given this name due to my grandfather being named thus (pretty common to do this here. The name itself is not as common*). I think it can sound ok (likely sounds better in English, though). The meaning is cool, since it doesn't even name which god/lord it is about, so i can be the viceroy of the mad animal Demiurge etc.

An issue is that it is pronounced differently than the monastic name (Kyriakos) which has its tone highlighted at 'o', while the opular name is toned at 'a'. Done so as to supposedly honor god more by distancing the non-monastic order people with the name. (a similar case is Christos, which for the popular name is spelled with a heta instead of an iota, and also toned elsewhere).

And no, i never ninja'd that post. Let me introduce you to mr Freudianslip ;) 'Christian' is a 'given' for nearly pan-european religion at birth, but whatever.

*Domenicos Theotokopoulos (the painter known also as 'El Greco') has the same name, but in the latin version, cause Crete was run by Venice at that time.

Kyriakos is your actual name? That's a pretty badass sounding name, compared to Joe, Frank, Steve, or whatever.

"What's your name?"
"Bob, and yours?"
"Kyriakos, dark overlord of the grey throne"
"I dont' know what that means, but for some reason I believe you"
