In response to MCdread's question then:

The English in Asterix in Britain are portrayed as a sort of upper-class toff for the most part. They all speak in a posh, affected English that you'd associate with the upper classes and relics of colonialism. So it's all "What ho, chaps!" and saying "Rather!" instead of "Yes". They use words like "jolly" and "smashing" and are generally reminiscent of the WWI flying corps.

 I need to read that!

Ok, another test on your Asterix-literacy:

With how many of the names of the Roman camps in Corsika can you come up? (any language)

Legionary!! All the stereotypes of different nations make it the best! :D Plus the fact that they are making a mockery of the harsh legions. ;)

Some others I remember from the German version:

- Saudum (= well... something like terribly stupid, literally "stupid like a sow")
- Delirium :D
- Ultimatum
- Uncletum (= Uncle Tom?)
- Seisdrum (something like "let it be" in German)
- Tschuingum (my favourite, it's what "Chewing Gum" would be spelled like if it was a German word)

Btw, there were two "Hintenrums" IIRC, North and South or East and West

Some camps (in french): Maximum, Minimum, Referendum and my favourite: Unpeudedecorum. :D

By way of a little quiz

That would be fine, we can turn this into a cumulative Astérix quiz. :)
Everybody knows how this works I guess, somebody asks a question (Astérix related) and the person who answers correctly asks the next question. And since I was the thread starter, may I have your permission to do the honours and officially open it. ;)
Here goes:

In what book does the great cycling champion Eddy Merckx (or, better said, his caricature) appears and what is his role?

Ah, a classic. I remember in my primary schooldays, some of the kids brought tons of them to school to read, even in class (hidden behind the textbook). It ended rather abruptly when our rather strict form teacher found out one day, instituted a search of the entire class and confisticated the whole lot.

I wonder if she had ever returned them... :hmm:

yeah, the rather large, long head, thin arms

evej I, not knowing him, immediately associated him with cycling

Yes, he was a messenger in Astérix in Belgium. :goodjob:
I think Hitro could ask the next question.

Has Hitro gone? I think I'll be the first (no doubt of many, if the quiz lasts) to break the order with an easy question that ought to keep you amused until Hitro returns.

In Asterix the Legionary, which has a couple of votes for the best so far (of which one was my own), what does Ptenisnet think he is doing in the army?

Easy!

Unfortunately I sometimes have to attend university lectures, thanks alot for helping out! :)

My question (very easy, can't think of anything better at the moment):
Which town is the first stage in their "Tour de France"?

Btw, please don't wait for my confirmation if someone answers correctly and another one can confirm it.

I think it is Rotomagus, which is modern day Rouen.

I'm a Tintin fan as well, but Asterix is much more funny. My vote would have to go for Asterix in Britain - but the Mansion of the Gods/Obelix and Co. are close runups...

Especially the scene where Caesar is getting taught about menhir economics... "uhhhh?"

I'm not 100% sure this was the right answer, because I don't have this book with me, although I've read it very recently at my cousin's house. Anyway I'm gonna post another question:

If Uderzo (one of the authors) were a civfanatic, what would be his vote in the James Bond thread and why? ;)

He would go for Sean Connery. At least he modelled the spy in (forgot what book it was, Asterix and the Odyssey?) after him.
