When did feminism go completely crazy?

For some reason I always associate autocratic rule and military domination with the right, not the left. America has perhaps been through some sort of reversal process.

Oh yeah, but it's if it's under the guise of world revolution, it's on the far left.

USSR? Eastern Europe?

The USSR idea came about in 1916 and the communification of Eastern Europe was about 1946.

Come on, as a leftist, even I can think of more recent leftist screw ups. How about LBJ's guns-and-butter policy in the 1960's? ["Yes, we can both fight the commies in Vietnam and have all our social policies; all we need do is to inflate our currency."]

Gamergate was always about misogyny; it has it's roots in it, it was born from it and it continues to propogate it.

Also i enjoy the inherent hypocrisy of those that cry "Leave politics out of gaming!" whilst at the same time being totally okay with politics, if only it agrees with their stance.

Basically Gamergate is a joke, it's considered a joke by actual journalists and game devs, it's merely a hate mob for certain youtube personalities to sic on their ideological enemies.

Wimmin, eh?!

Typical.

I don't know when/if/why feminism did go completely crazy?

I have met some pretty crazy people though. Some of whom were wimmin.

I don't see why.

It's quite a well written OP, imo. (As such things go). And, if I knew more about recent trends in feminism, I might be able to make some semi-coherent response to it. But I don't; so I won't try.

So my question is, what the hell happened to feminism? When did it change from a respectable civil rights movement to a religion as ridiculous and pernicious as Scientology? Can it be saved, or has it passed a sort of sanity event horizon?

It all boils down on the individual that call herself a feminist and the degree of courage she has, as well what she actually had to face. Let's face it, there is no way Anita Sarkeesian can have experienced the same stuff Ayaan Hirsi Ali has. Feminists who actually do something substantial, like the latter example, therefore focus on attacking organised religion (especially Islam, which is arguably more powerful than Christianity these days) instead of video games.

In this thread; men tell women what's really important to them.

Feminism has always criticised media; are they suddenly less "feminist" or worthy in your eyes now? Feminist theory doesn't just pertain to religion you know. I'd say it takes a lot of courage to critique something when the backlash that ensures involves death threats, swatting, people trying to ruin your career and life.

Eh, it's just the same thing as everything else right now. Everybody that is a unstudied adherent of the movement, which is easy to be considering it's a damned good movement, has the internet and the really really stupid things that some people say are going to get spread around. Consider the crazyfemnutjobs the equivalent of the crazymranutjobs, then realize they can, and are sometimes inclined to, read each other's stuff to show their other halfarse informed friends how stupid and crazy people who don't agree with them are.

There are just too many crazy people out there, and thanks to the internet, they all have a voice. A lot of movements have been seemingly taken over by crazies - there's people out there who think they are fighting "the good fight" against racism, but at the same time they say racism against certain racial groups is impossible. There are feminists who say that it's impossible to be sexist against men. A lot environmental and green movements have been seemingly taken over by crazy people too - people who think that vaccinations cause autism, that homeopathy actually works, that "detox" is a thing that will make you healthier, and a plethora of other crazy ideas.

In essence a lot of causes seem to be slowly taken over by a vocal batcrap crazy minority. Heck, there is even an online community that attempts to combat all forms of injustice - but as a result of them being insane, they are actually a large form of injustice themselves.

Crazy people like that undermine such movements and make us laugh at them, while at the same time we wonder if there's any sane people in the world left. There are! But most of them are disillusioned, sitting at home, watching TV.

Well, it's not necessarily a bad thing that conversations happen. The most insane conversations I had on the quad were good conversations. They were a learning experience, I see no reason internet conversations cannot also be such. But they're not so private, and sometimes conversations that should only be useful for the fact that they air out ideas that put things in perspective or a different light and then need discarded, sometimes these things go viral and people actually buy them. Then they trench in, which is problematic. Like anti-vaccines or the food babe or or or.

Feminism got "crazy" with the realization that the "equality" 2nd wave feminists were fighting for and the experiences they incorporated were singularly focused on the plight of white educated women. The scope of feminism expanded. People are ok with white women agitating for equal rights, but LGBT women? minority women? Nuh-UH!

To further push this point, there are even feminists that outright reject, hate and discriminate against transwomen; Trans-Exclusionary Radical feminists, but thankfully they are not representative of all feminism.
