So, I've been posting a lot in other threads about where you can make some extra money doing online jobs. I've finally wrote a more in-depth article on it:

http://www.articlesbase.com/careers-articles/finding-online-jobs-in-a-rough-economy-3818067.html

Basically, its not get-rich-quick or anything but I have used these methods to pick up odd jobs online and grab myself a couple thousand dollars. I did it in college too and it paid for my rent, bills, and food. I've never done it full-time, only about 3 hrs a day max at one point and was picked up a couple thousand dollars in the 2 months span that I was doing these kind of odd jobs.

I still do these from time to time for kicks but no so much as I used to 2-3 years ago because my regular job(also online) pays me a lot more.

I suspect if I went back to it I could pretty easily gain an additional $2500 a month at least doing these jobs.

For all of you who are unemployed or are students, its a decent way to pay the bills or pay for room/board in college. Tech skills are generally not required for many of these jobs, but the ability to write decent english articles/essays are.

You have to be pretty vigilant and keep PM'ing people in the business forums I mentioned before you get a steady stream of clients.

But seriously, I wasn't just making this stuff up, there are literally hundreds of thousands, if not millions of jobs out there.

A much easier way to put yourself through college/university is to join online casinos which give a bonus on joining, but only play blackjack until you have satisfied the conditions to claim the bonus, then withdraw your winnings and leave. The bonus amount is almost always more than any losses from playing.

I've written a few online articles, and I've mostly been highly unimpressed with the folks I've worked for. They don't really care if the content is good, and many of them only pay out in proportion to your pageviews, rather than a flat fee for the content, which means you are responsible for both producing the content AND marketing it. Unless you want to just churn out a TON of articles, I didn't find it worth my time. As a writer, I'd rather find clients that paid for the quality of my work, not just content farms (which is pretty much what Squiddo is)

Programmers can make a lot more coin than just writers, since there seems to be a bit of a market failure with determining prices for written content.

I don't do pay for performance -- I only take flat fees and I've gotten it every time. Usually a penny a word. And I can crank out 2000 word articles in an hour and a half tops.

The writing jobs are mostly from digitalpoint members and they pay flat upfront.

Technical writing pays more than regular writing.

I think the only website that offers that is Elance. I didn't get very many of those jobs because they required technical knowledge that I didn't have, or wasn't efficient for me to research. When I write for a magazine or a newspaper, I either get a per word (I ask between 5-11 cents per word, but I rarely write 2000 word articles), or a flat fee. The largest freelance article websites (Examiner, Associated Content, Squiddo, etc) pay out with pageviews, and they don't even try to promote your articles.

I don't really write for squiddoo unless its for fun. I took writing jobs from people are digital point forums. 5-11 cents is way above what they are willing to pay, but even at 1c a word, I was getting $15/hr on average. After I did a couple of writing jobs, I got higher offers. I did those for a while, before my own business kicked up and I stopped altogether.
