Where you stand on the political compass..

I've taken it a few times - I seem to hover around the -3, -1 area.

Economic Left/Right: -4.25
Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -5.28

About the same place as the Dalai Lama.

I've done this before, is there a seperate thread with the same test?
EDIT: Yes there is

So, there is no one near me. :(

See sig

Yes, I am not alone.

You do realize that being anything like me means you are insane.

:mischief: Well, at least I have another brother in the realm of free-market insanity.

I'm not really sure what you consider 'truly' socialist economies.. the countries that are both prosperous and have a fairly coherent society with few people living in poverty do not have socialist economies, rather they are social-democratic market economies. Meaning that they're capitalist based, but with high taxes that level the playing field. The Scandinavian and western European countries are the major proponents there.

I was mainly referring to the Scandanavian countries and Japan... They are, as you say social-democratic market economies, or socialism as defined by my Hight school economics class:

Basically Japan (the only one that I have first-hand experience with) has LOW taxes (5% national sales tax and a few others, but no income tax), but that is made up for by the fact that the government owns about 80% of the railroads and just about all the energy industries, which the government operates at a slight profit, thereby providing revenue. Additional revenue in Japan comes from Tolls on roadways... The Japanese equivalent of the interstate highway system is all toll, and the tolls are pretty darn expensive, which causes people to be more likely to use the trains (which the government, again, owns). Japan's unemployment, even with their "recession" is MUCH lower than the US. The city of Yokosuka, Japan, which is about the same size (population wise) as San Diego and its surrounding areas, has about 1/4 the homeless people that San Diego and its surrounding areas do.

Economic Left/Right: -3.50
Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -3.38

That sounds about right. :o

In Japan companies also provide benefits for employees.. so the company carries the tax burden instead. In Scandinavia companies typically don't provide anything because health and education is mostly free.

There is definitely disagreement of what socialism is, some social-democrats consider themselves socialists.. something I find odd because they strongly support the basic capitalist principles. That's all semantics of course, but it always rubs me wrong when they say they're socialists..

I forgot when I last took this, so I took it again and I got:

Economic Left/Right: -2.50
Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -1.33

Ye-gads, AlCosta! I'm Republican, but my economic standpoint is quite a bit further to the left than yours is! That just doesn't seem right somehow.....

You're definitely not republican in the economic area according to that test. In fact, you score quite a bit to the left of me and I roughly represent Scandinavian social democracies in the economic context (very roughly, I'll vary on actual issues)

Left 4.63
Libertarian 5.44

Been a year since I last did the test, so one year later:

Economic Left/Right: -4.63
Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -5.90

Pretty much no change at all. If nothing else I am consistent.

My wife took it too and we were happy to find out that we are at least politically compatable!

you only jumped to the left by 9 points. ;)

You won't believe this, but here it is:

Economic L/R: -2.38
Social - L/A: -1.59

It put me next to Gandhi and the Dalai Lama.

That is a surprise!

Ah. Didn't catch that left part. I thought he was saying he moved from 4.63 to -4.63.
