How would you explain last year's superbowl crackdown?

Those complaints were from women, gay men, and religious men. The rest of us didn't mind or didn't care.

I said men not drones working at the FCC. Anyway most of the opinions I heard were along the lines of "what's the big deal." and remember just because the government doesn't accept it doesn't mean it's socially unacceptable, look at marijuana use.

Goto Comfest. There's a reason the ultra-feminist militant-lesbians aren't arrested for being topless. The Law in Ohio stated gentiles must be covered at all times. Women sued saying that breasts were to be no more considered gentiles than a man's chest, therefore, women should be allowed to go topless. They won. This is why women can breastfeed in public (unless there's a local law over riding). This is why there are half-naked women at Comfest.

It's also a rare occurance that any women would be bare-chested on her own. Too much negitive attention. Would you want to be called a whore everywhere you went? It's still a taboo... just not a legal one. Atleast, not on TV

I don't understand the purdent approch. What is more harmful to a minor, seeing a breast, or the implication that seeing a breast makes you dirty?

I don't know how it is in the US, but it's pretty common in Europe to see women suntanning topless on beaches.
So while the taboo is still strong, I think it's on the decline...

From everywhere I've lived, I'd have to say only the Middle East is more culturally sensitive to nudity than the United States. In fact, nudity as the reason for a movie being rated R will not cause me to stop my kids from watching it. I think the US is way too prudish. Hopefully I get back to the European beaches (and ski slopes) in the next few years.

Suddenly that reminds me of that Seinfeld episode with Cramer with that odd thing.

IIRC, I also think that some native american woodland tribeswomen went topless. This would very from tribe to tribe.

Interestingly enough, there was a drastic change in European treatment of sexuality after 1493. Dress became much stricter, chastity a much more perscribed virtue, and even language was affected. The use of "white meat" for breast in chicken was an example, for instance.
If that was the case in Britain, it certainly isn't now. Chicken and turkey have breast, thighs and legs. In a similar vain, a male chicken is a cockrel (usually shortened to the first 4 letters), not rooster. And we use titbit rather than tidbit. And Janet Jackson would have been a cause for national laughter, not moral outrage.

Lotsa people keep mentioning extinct cultures that showed boobs. There were plenty of these. The Minoans, I believe (it may have been the Myceneans) actually designed all their clothing to cover the abdomen (the belly button was considered private) but to show off the chest (boobs for women, pecs for guys). I think the OP inquired after CURRENT cultures that are more nudity friendly.
As far as current first world countries, the Germans probably have the most open-to-nudity society I know of.

women of all ages in bulgaria were topless on the beach, not all of them but quiet a few.

Technically tribal women's breasts are G-rated. after all they're allowed on PBS (public television).
