Well, the Dark Side is always easier.

Wow, more people plays Civ3 than Civ5, that's a bit shameful.

I am a civfanatic since the days of Civ1. Civ4BTS is the best Civ game in my opinion.

I tried Civ5 but I despise the 1upt system. I will try it again if they allow building armies (hopefully unlimited).

Stacks of Doom

A fine persian carpet indeed!

Is that a unit in every land tile?
Why do you think I laugh with disgust each time I see the argument about "how 1upt is better because we don't have these stupid stack of doom everywhere !" ?
The only result is a "carpet of doom" instead of a "stack", and I prefer the latter a million times.

And with the "Stack of Doom" limited like I did in my mod for Civ IV and many others did with tile limits, the problem has largely gone away.

All you had to do was sidestep the stack of doom with a few fast units and sweep into the enemy cities, or just start destroying improvements anywhere.

Civ III

I play civ IV almost every day & lurk Civ III games.

Civ4

It may look stupid, but with the proper balancing skills, it moves just fine :)

Civ5

"We are only two clicks from the rally point and expect to arrive in thirteen hours".

I like the 1UPT system in theory, but with Civ5's small maps, it's simply not functional.
Had they increased the maps in size to Panzer General scale and changed gameplay accordingly, it might have worked. As it is, it's one big traffic jam.

They tried to eliminate stacks of doom but what they got instead is carpets of doom. So cumbersome.

If that happens, you are playing on too small of a map, and you are letting the AI run away like a freight train. If the AI has that many units, then they have too much gold, and someone is cheating the system. I have never had a game where it got that crowded.

I can understand not wanting CS's, but those act as buffers and also leads to fewer troops overall. Having them as allies also gives more room to put units. If you position them just right the AI can keep sending in suicide units and attack the CS without taking the city.

They could have solved the problem of the stacks of doom easily: if you put 2 units in one tile they merge, if you put 20 units in one tile they merge.

this concept was used in CivIII with the armies, and this can be perfected of course.

I was playing Civ 3 for the longest time thanks in no small way to all of Wyrmshadow's excellent work at creating units, but then I discovered the Realism Invictus mod for Civ 4 and I haven't looked back.

If you play on a top-sized map on top difficulty, it's basically a race against time to raze the world before the AI becomes a regenerating carpet.
