Which unit do you think is the most unless?

Rubbish.

Explorers are jetpacked goody hut poppers/enemy locators/city site finders. I Love Em
Warriors are Great for cheap marshal law, and eventual 10 shield cost riflemen, cheap expendable psuedo explorers.
Marines seem to fare better than Alpine troops, if I need the movement of alpine I build them, otherwise I'll go Marine.
Helicoptors are pretty bad come to think of it> if they get attacked, they die, period. They cost way too much for that ability.

I would love to use explorers in a game, but I just don't get the chance to. I picked them as my "most useless" because they are probably my least used, not least liked. By the time they're available, I've already explored my continent, and a few ships are already far off, sniffing along the coastlines. Usually I stow a none unit onboard for revealing the few inland squares, while the ship awaits it's return.

to me the most useless unit is the trireme. it has very low attack and defense and it can be lost at sea. of course if you were on a little island they would be useful, and if you were to make the lighthouse wonder it would be even more useful. but i never usually build the lighthouse and i never have been on a island so small to where i had to leave that early in the game.

trireme is great, unless you're afraid of expanding off your starting island

are you gonna waste advances going after navigation before you move off the main land?

it depends on what type of situation i'm in. if i was at war with a other civ that shared my island i probably wouldnt since i should be researching some weapons technology, but if i had nothing to do but expand or something, i might. I guess i would use the trireme if i was being overrun by the other civ. pack a few settlers in and run. but thats about only when i would use it.

I find that helicopters are next to useless as well. They damage when they move, and they die when attacked, always. Their attack isn't even that powerful against cities either. They are only useful for occupation and OCCASIONALLY naval support.

I've never once used Helicopters/Cruise Missiles

Ive used Chariots before, when I pop them in huts

I agree with ohwell. if i'm going to attack something by air, then i might as well use a bomber(or stealth) or fighter(or stealth). they have better attack numbers. yeah they need to refuel again but you could always have a carrier or if your in luck be close enough to use your citys, which is mostly the case.

explorers - cuz they siphon off a shield and can't attack for crap!

I love partisans, because I never build them (always NON)

I use explorers to open huts and for recon missions, they are cheap to come by and they only use your shields if you are in a Dem. or a Rep. or have too many units.
I never build CATAPULTS, too weak and I am always on the offense anyway. I never build helicopters, destroyers {I have seen them lose to frigates and ironclads.} I only build marines if I need them but usually do not. to me, the stuka dive bombers are a waste, they cost to much and have a short range sompared to the heavy bombers. I like to use blimps even though they have no attack strength, but ground units cannot kill them only fighters.

Its interesting how many people dump on Warriors. I put off a certain tech so I don't have to build Pikemen. I won't take it if offered and use @##$@ when I waste hut finding it. Warriors are the cheapest way in the game to maintain order. Then Lennies Lab will turn them into muskets for you.

All that being said, I am coming to realization that my style is downright odd in this group. I can be downright isolationist.

I think that Partisans are great if you get them for free! They are super for just fortifying around an enemy city. :D :D :D

But going back to warriors, I think they are the worst unit to ever have been invented!!!!

Why not send ONE warrior out, which in turn will explore all the huts possible, and bring out even better units then warriors?:viking:

10 shields (cost of one warrior) + Leo's = a rifleman, which is the cheapest unit on the board. I think riflemen are also one of the most under rated units in the game. I have always looked down on them as second-rate combat units good only for garrison duty until mech inf arrives, but, in the last GOTM game, I captured scads of them while bribing AI cities to revolt. Most of them were veterans, one of the few times I have seen the AI use barracks properly, and used on railroads to enhance their movement, they proved to be very effective attack units. Or if your into rush building new stuff, riflemen make a cheap source of shields, ie, for an investment of 10 shields in a warrior, who becomes a rifleman through Leo's, you have 20 shields available when you disband the rifleman. Thats a 100% return on your investment in the original warrior!

:tank:

The warrior is -one of the most precious units!
You need him for incremental buying!
I never build explorers.

I never usually build many military units in the first stages of the game. As i always play on diety level and on a huge map its very difficult to conquer many cities in the begining without heavy losses since units have low attack, production is very low (hence it takes much longer to build units of reasonable strength), unit movement is low and their is no infurstructure to 'move them' e.g. railroads.
I usually concentrate on economy and maintaining the peace until i can build Armour, Howitzers, Stlth Fighters, Mech. inf, AEGIS Cruisers and then if i cant win the space race i declare war and conquer my enemies one by one.
All other units are a joke and totally useless. Although Cruise Missiles can come in handy sometimes when attacking a particularly strong city (especially on an island-can't attack with howitzers). Battleships are good untill everyone else develops Rocketry and constantly pound your Battleships with Cruise Missiles. Other than that no other units besides those mentioned above have any significant or effective use in the later stages of the game.

When Rocketry comes, rush build vet Ageis cruisers to support your battleships, say 3-4 ageis for each battleship group and watch the AI waste all its production throwing cruise missiles at the group. The Battleship draws CMs like bees to honey and the ageis cruisers just swat em!! be sure to have a couple of destroyers arround to keep the subs away from your group too.

Its always better to have the AI waste its CMs on your ageis group than having it take potshots at your transports, which should also have ageis protection.

One thing I find really annoying...when I try to escort a Battleship or a Carrier with an AEGIS cruiser, the escorted unit is always the defender against missile attacks (probably because they are supposed to have a higher defence rating)! Am I the only one who experience this bug?
Fun to get this thread on top again after being gone for half a year...

it has 2 be cruise missiles. you spend ages building them, and then:
they only destroy one land unit in a city
it takes one to several to destroy various ships
they die if you leave them 'out 4 2 long'

RUBBISH

That is not a bug, that is the way it is supposed to work. The higher defense rating takes the first hit. Make sure the AEGIS is a Vet, and you will spash dozens of missiles.
