While We Wait: Part 5

Son of a ... Anyways, who here has a facebook!?

You don't want NESers as friends on Facebook. :p Well, a few of them are all right.

What're plasmids?

Basically rings of DNA in bacteria that code for (usually) a single trait. They replicate these rings, occasionally exchange them, and when they divide, both daughter cells usually get them. They're the way bacteria spread genes around, basically.

If I had a facebook, I wouldn't tell you guys. So you'll never know if I do or not. :p

It's a DNA capsule that basically enables asexual reproduction, from what little I remember from quiz bowl and the irate ranting of a few good biology student friends of mine.

EDIT: I am purposely keeping information that I know off of Wikipedia so that I can claim to know something that it does not. It makes me feel important.

EDIT: NVM

Oh, does anyone have any logical arguments to why biology is usually sexist?

I was talking about female empowerment. Daughter cells, hello? What, no sons?

As someone who's going to end up getting a biology degree whether he likes it or not, I can probably answer this.

My hypothesis is that biologists still feel sorry about Rosalind Franklin getting shafted for the Nobel Prize in favor of Watson and Crick, even though her X-Ray crystallography data led directly to the discovery of DNA. And on top of that, she died of radiation poisoning. Epic wins? I think not.

So, maybe they added some more female terms to break up the old boys club. You never know. ;)

Yeah, Watson and Crick were wads. At least, Watson was. Crick wasn't all that bad, I suppose. But Wilkins, Watson, and Crick won that Prize for more than just the double helix model.

Apparently jeps knows more people who act on Degrassi than he does viewers of the TV show, and he's Canadian. Excellent measure of the show as a whole, I think.

My name is not actually jeps, but i endorse this message!

So, this friend of mine has had this hollow chest for like his whole life (he's 18) and now the ribs are straightened out. You know how?

1. Lots of morphine
2. They break his ribs and then arranges them in a good position they should grow back together
3. They give him a sort of a fake skeleton to support it a bit
4. Lots of morphine
5. He gets home, will be on painkillers constantly (otherwise he would die from the pain)
6. It will still hurt, and he can't bend himself down for 3 months.

As terrible as it already sounds, get this... He is immune to morphine. His alternative drug took some time to work (He took it at phase 4), so he spent a night with no painkiller as well as broken ribs...

I have no idea how he got through it.

I thought it was because Nobel Prizes weren't given out posthumously?

That's insane. Mad props to your friend for sticking it out.

That would be the shaft, yeah. (Waits for joke about Rosalind Franklin's experiences with sexism.)

Come on sheep, you don't want to transfer some plasmids every now and then?

:mischief:

True but I do prefer to transfer to a deposit box than just to let it go to the wind.... if you can catch my drift mate.

I was wondering if anyone had noticed that :P Indeed I think overall for the world Obama will be better than that McCain fellow, not to mention the fact that everytime I heard the name 'McCain' it made me think of chips and frozen vegetables.
