I have decided that Naomi Klein and her "arguments" peppered as they are with disingenuous points, downright misrepresentation, ignorance, outright lies and bizarre revisionism should have been smothered at birth. I don't think I've read worse partisan hack - even Anne Coulter doesn't quite reach her level of self righteousness and pomposity - and I'm thick skinned, I can actually like Noam Chomsky at times and digest what he has to say. Klein makes Blair's spin look like he was bowling pace and manages to contort and twist her logic so far I'm surprised she can get up in the morning - by her reckoning up is down, right is left and the world dances to a demonic Milton Friedman inspired trill. If you have read Klein, sympathies with some of what she has to say about globalization et al. I implore you to read Danny Rodrick, he is at least intelligent, is honest, doesn't construe logic so far you could tie knots with it and offers a scathing criticism which doesn't resort to name calling and ignorance.

Agreed. The ending of the Union was due a series of unlucky events, some even being hilarious. Then again, difficult to diplomatically conquer a nation in civil war. :p

Playing devil's advocate here, but:

1- How could an unlucky nation establish the Union in the first place?

2- How come Norway consistently stayed Danish? Charles XI (I think) tried and failed to take a slice.

3- How come Denmark ever secured Livonia?

"OOC": Out of curiousity, what was so hilarious about it?

Because the Union was quite doable; the specific circumstances around the 14th century served Sweden to Denmark on a silver plate.

Norway wasn't hard to control since their heritage was based upon simple royal heritage; Sweden and Denmark, however, each elected their kings or queens. As the Norwegian kingdom's royal family died out into Denmark, they kinda became inherited by the Danish kings due to traditional Norwegian law. And Denmark treated Norway nicely, just like Denmark treated Sweden.

3- How come Denmark ever secured Livonia?

They lost it again, you know. Denmark was more powerful than Livonia when they conquered it; therefore they had on actual issues invading the area. Keeping it, however, was not doable for Danish idiocracy. I don't know the details about this though.

It's like the way we lost England. [/facepalm]

Swedish people thinking Denmark was spreading Middle Age Danish imperialism throughout Sweden when Denmark was actually trying to reduce the influence of the Hanseatic League. Most of the Swedish nobles replaced by Danes were Germans, you know. Also, when Sweden revolted against everyone including itself, Denmark was unable to surpress it with superior strength on several occations.

... look at Denmarks golden age its just so embarrassing?

Honestly, Denmark's history is mostly a it-could-have-been, some genuinely good parts in the Middle Ages aside (Valdemar Sejr, anyone? But even that could've gone so much better). Which is what makes it good for alternate histories, ofcourse.

It must be a stain on the national conscience to have a little brother - Sweden - stealing all the limelight. It must be grating in the extreme to know that, that little brother then surpassed you for a fair slug of history :(

At least we stopped them, eventually. Denmark should be more grateful. :p

Aye, but das before you did we managed to capture an intact Moscow something neither the French nor Germans managed to do during their respective goes at Russia. ;)

IIRC, at least the last Danish King of the Kalmar Union (Christian II) was not the nicest fellow to have as a ruler, well for Swedes anyway. Danes can only blame the resulting Swedish revolt on Christians actions... The Stockholm bloodbath, anyone?

What exactly is a "serious" NES defined by the people who mentioned it? I'm assuming that my NES doesn't fall into that selection since the people who want a serious NES aren't in mine. I was momentarily irked by that, though I can definitely admit that I don't always keep a AP press report attitude in my updates.

You mean the De la Gardie thing? The Poles did it better, IMHO. ;)

NESes where the research systems aren't so... gamey?

Olny North King's,Beej and the FFH NES count as real NES currently IMO.
