While We Wait: The Next Generation

I don't know if we have any comic readers on here, but I was just thinking, has anyone read the Batman story Arc No Man's Land? I remember it had a map in it of how Gotham was split between all the different super villains and gangs while Batman was absent.

Would anyone be interested in a mini-NES (small updates, simple rules) done with this? Players would take the role of Two-Face, Penguin, the Riddler etc and attempt to run illegal operations (gun running, casinos etc) and raid each others territories.

I found a picture of the map. If people were interested, I'd convert it to NES style and make it a little more interesting. (Add in some people not shown like The Joker, Riddler, possibly Lex Luthor)

Hmm... what is it exactly that you are proposing? What would happen if two mods infamous for overextending themselves tried working together? ;)

I'm interested.

Hmm, I'm not sure exactly :) I was thinking something fairly simple, like your earlier GeneNES. The collaboration would just be for the sake of collaborating, not that its so complex that two mods are actually needed!

OPEN LETTER ABOUT WWW THREAD

I know spam is bad, and there is a whole OT forum, but it seems we've swung to the other extreme and now people are scared to post here. From 5+ pages a day, to 0.

For 'global' users of civfanatics I can see the appeal of OT. But I choose to spend my very limited internet time on the NES forum, and I value the opinions and comments of people here, particularly given the calmer and more intellectual mood here. I don't necessarily want to post things in OT.

Is there any chance of going halfway with the restrictions? Allowing the unusual NES forum its own thread where moods and feelings of this unusual community can be expressed in controlled amounts of 'spam'?

While I don't have much sentiment to post in this thread personally, I agree with this. A particular forum may have a particular purpose, but if it can be adapted to several purposes it (as a rule) should.

Being the coward that I am, I didn't really want to voice out my thoughts on this but yes, I am in full agreement with Daft here.

From my own experience, OT is full of people with either no sense of humour or are just plain wacked. The original WWW threads were a safe place for NESers to bash each other, talk trash and other things within our own community without getting mired in the whole "Creation vs. Evolution", "Obama vs. McCain", "this vs. that" rubbish which seems to fill up all the threads in OT. That place is knee-deep in Hatorade.

A relaxation on the restrictions would definitely be ideal. That my first spam warning in the five years I've been on this forum came from the new WWW thread does make it seem a bit... sad.

I said seriously considering updating. When I don't seriously consider it, I don't do it.

This topic has been discussed in the mod forum and the sentiment there is that OT needs to be in the OT forum. Giving NESing its own special OT platform is seen as elitist and out of character with TF's philosophy. I do not forsee that changing any time soon.

A revival of NES chat might be a way to get around it. I suggest that if you want to discuss this further you take it to SF in the form of a general discussion about the value of the many small communities within CFC and how those communities need OT outlets that are not subject to the wild ravings and over the top posting of the general OT forum etc. etc. etc.

Yet, for some odd reason, you claim to be doing it (repeatedly claiming to be working on an update), which in conjunction with that post, gives you a seriously bad position. I don't have an issue with whether or not you were considering it, but rather your right to have posted that comment.

Given how many people are logged on at the moment, it's suprising how few posts there are...

Personally I am scared to post, due to the vast ramp up of moderator action lately.

NESing needs its own OT because our OT isn't generic OT discussion about religion etc.

Why not allow us to run free again, but the WWW threads get trashed once they reach 1000?

We're discussing overall posts, rather than posts AT THIS VERY MOMENT.

I wasn't trying to join the topic, but to start a seperate line of discussion.

I need to be up to speed. Would anyone here please be a kind philchickenist and give me a summary of major events from the past three months?

WWW had a moderator surge to stop rampant 'spam' (the inverted comma's tend to depend on which side of the fence your on). One mans spam is another mans carefully reasoned and thoroughly relevant criticism of the American political system. The 'surge' translated into more Moderator boots on the ground, which we can presume led to the reduction in 'spam' in the forums. It might also be linked to the 'spamic cleansing' of 'spammist' elements in WWW7(?) which then got closed to posting.

Crenzth then started WWW8(?) which was closed down for continuing the old 'spammist' ways. The mods were not in the business of negotiating. Crenzth and the community were warned by something to the effect that 'the next person who opens a WWW thread gets banned'. I'm yet to read the text of the ultimatum again but I wonder what would happen if the issuer broke his own ultimatum? If so is it possible if for him to ban himself (a test would be most appreciated)? The instigator of this 'surge' in moderator involvement remains unknown. Theories have been aired in secret as to who made the first contact but we are still not sure. The leader of the 'surge' Moderator Turner is still poking his nose in on occasion to make sure his child (where's the mother?) this WWW is still ticking along 'spam' free. This WWW is unique, in that it's apparently "The Next Generation" or somesuch of Turner. Neverthless its stated purpose is:

If you feel the need to spam/post off topic, we have an entire subforum provided for just such posting. Use it. Spamming this thread, or for that matter other NES threads, will be dealt with.

Which was endorsed by some rejected adamantly by others. Most of us stayed away with a mute look of horror and returned to our perfect little lives. In any case since the 'intervention in NESing affairs' firmly took root WWW has been lingering in the same zombie like state that Citibank finds itself - insolvent for want of posters -. Of course it doesn't help that its been rated as junk by the community and subsequently dumped from subscriptions faster than the drop in the Dow Jones.

We can't be sure but this 'unprecedented crisis' in confidence by the NESing community and a drop in posts and intellectual conversation could be linked! In any case as a certain well educated, state side, quiz bowler noted 'the forums are boring now' (or something to that effect).

But how long is this state of affairs which try a mans soul going to last? About as long as it takes for Bananalee and myself to be annoyed.

BJ also became a mod.

Moderator Action: Thread reopened.

Guys, I'm going to ask you to trust me on this one. There was a reason why Abaddon had a four month ban. It's not really for public discussion.

Suffice it to say, the new thread should not have been opened. That was a colossal misunderstanding. Y'all were told to take the discussion of the status of the threads out of here, not create a new on. I can see where the misunderstanding was. As such, Abaddon will still have to serve out his ban, but I have reset it to four days from now, as opposed to the four months it is.

In any event, I suggest we all move forward from this point. Please keep in mind the rules in general and the specific rules I mentioned in the OP, which was just a rehash of the forum rules anyways.

And please, any discussion, PM me. I am more than willing to discuss this privately.

Enjoy.
