Yes, yes, and I'm Persia...how many times has THAT particular metaphor been played out? :p

You are but one Persia; we are a confederation of many Spartas. :p

Eugh.. i'm considering canning my NES.. it doesnt seem to be generating much interest :(

Are people choosing not to play because if me? The setting? What?

Not really interested in Magic NESes, TBH.

Well, lots of silly people wait for a NES to get to a certain point before joining. Another factor could be that schoolwork and other RL stuff could be interfering with people joining. And of course, some people just don't appreciate magic NESes. :(

I personally really want to see your NES continue, mainly because it is fun. I also had a really awesome plot going along with Izawau and Iptsima.

I think the magic gimmick looks pretty cool. I worry that it doesn't really fit with the other empire-building gameplay mechanics, but I think that testing out that sort of thing for future development is a good idea. Honestly, what's keeping me away isn't the magic, but the other aspects of the NES - the fact that it's basically just another rapid expansion wargame. The updates and modding are good, but the rules are completely geared towards a thoughtless wargame. It's obvious that a couple of players are going to get wiped out early, then alliances will start forming, then it'll be a two-sided bloc war, betrayals and other wonkiness aside. If I want that sort of thing, I'll play Risk or something. If someone were to host a more detailed, thoughtful NES, whether or not magic was included, I'd be much more likely to join.

I've thought about doing this, but I don't really know if I'm good enough mod material to pull it off. And I always have the problem for modding a NES I want to play, and not actually mod.

Edit: And there's always the issue of how magic is manipulated, whether it's created, and its other characteristics that make Magic NESes a little difficult to run.

Exaclty. I kept things simple to try an ensure I could mod it. BUT you are completly right that it is a glorified RISK.

Hmm. I'll think on this.
If it does dodo, I would be launching something else.

How could I keep with simple rules, but make it less risk? Add more land?

Well, keep in mind that my diagnosis would only be entirely valid if all NESers were like myself. Super SuperPower NES, despite being if anything more risklike than yours, has tons of players and seems to be chugging along... somehow. I wouldn't be caught dead in it, but plenty of players seem to like that sort of thing. :p

If you do want to make it less risklike, though, I think there has to be a balance between different overall strategies. Make war really expensive and ultimately self-destructive to the warring nation, and make the most efficient route of empire building be peaceful and diplomatic. Include peacetime traderoutes, even if they have to be the ridiculously expoitable type that have fallen out of favor over the past couple of years. Add some peacetime spells, so that players can have fun with the magic system without needing to be at war all the time. If you're willing to make the game more complex, try modelling factors like the populace's dissent with disagreeable policies and such. At least, those seem like the most obvious steps to make a "better" NES, to me.

I don't know. I like what I call to myself the BS NESes, like the Super SuperPower NES simply because I can be ridiculous and have a good time.

But I also like the ones like your's Chand, and NK and Iggy. Unfortunately I cannot for some reason bring myself to join NK's at this point. (I would have loved to join at the start or close to it).

I find that they both serve a purpose and entertain me in different ways.

I feel pretty close to Adrogans in that regard. I like playing in a bit of both sides of NESing. I had been considering joining Abaddon's magic NES, but back when it started I was a bit busier than normal. I have gained more free time recently but I have already missed a good portion of it and I wonder if it would even be worth joinning at this point.

Adrogans you can join mine when it becomes more 'normal' in a few turns :p

No way! I'm african? I can make SO many more jokes now and they won't be racist!

Or is this some new altered-earth map NES where america's hat joins up with the puzzle piece?

war really expensive
Should be part of the design philosophy of any NES!

It would be a lot more interesting with debts, though. Maybe a DEMONIC DEBT of SOULS (to be collected in NEAR FUTURES) for Magic NESes? It will be WAY COOL.

Yeah, someone should really get cracking on that. But who would dare attempt such a feet as magnificant as that? ;)

Anyways, if something like that happened to my country in an NES, I'd find some loop-hole out of the debt. Or maybe I'd somehow trap demonic souls and send them back to where they came from as payment.

You have to think out of the box on stuff like this.

BirdNES 3 will feature both debt and expensive wars. It will also have two player bankers to charge outrageous rates for their cash!
