"Who's he?" asked Devin.

"Oh- that's Sergeant Wilkes. He's been in a lot of trouble lately."

As Devin heard about, Wilkes started to look like a very risky, but potential ally. Starting an Indian War was precisely what he wanted. He decided to go over to him, and talk to him.

(OOC: germanicus, can I play Wilke's personality out? If not, I'm okay with you deciding how he reacts to Devin)

OOC: You can play out Wilkes if you want, but just remember that Jacob and his group is just about to enter the town, then they have two saloons to search. ;)
 
"Hi"
"What do you want?"
"Are you Sergeant Wilkes?"
"What of it?"
"I've heard you started something up with the Indians?"
"Yeah- that I did."
"What happened?"

As Wilkes recounted his own version of the tale, Devin basically agreed on every point. Privately, he wasn't sure it was true. But he knew that agreeing would help make an ally.

"People talk about Manifest Destiny, but when it comes down to it they don't act on it!"
"Huh?"
"We shouldn't take trash from these Indians! We should get rid of them!"

As Devin continued with some rhethoric, he eventually persuaded Wilkes. After all, it was easy to get somebody to rationalise their own actions.

"Let's go out now and start an Indian War!"
"Agreed".

They walked out of the building together- straight into Jacob and Sergeant O'Callahan.
 
"Wilkes!" Shouted Captain Anderson. Wilkes seemed surprised to see them there, but that is to be expected when you are drunk...
"Wilkes, get your horse and go back to the fort, now!" Captain Anderson completely ignored the person next to him.
Wilkes turned around and headed for his horse, but instead of getting on, he turned around again this time holding his army issued rifle. "Anderson, you may be our commander, but those Indians must die!" With that he fired one round and jumped on his horse and sped off to the distance. Jacob quickly checked himself and found that he was not hit, and looked around, Sergeant O'Callahan is fine, but where was the Private. A weak groan was heard and Jacob immediatly saw the Private kneeling over and dropping to the ground, blood spilling from under him. Jacob rushed to the Private, as the town came alive, the first to arrive were those from the Saloon, then a deputy arrived, followed by another and finally the sheriff. Jacob looked at the Private and said, "You will live son." Even though no one will survive a gut wound. He turned to O'Callahan and told him to stay with the Private and get him to the doctor.
"Where are you going Cap'n?"
"Wilkes must pay for this."
"Sir, go to the fort and gather some men before you go."
"No time, the fort is 5 miles that way, and Wilkes is going the other way." Jacob was on his horse and he raced off. Another horse was in the distance, Jacob knew it was not Wilkes, maybe it was just a spooked horse or something.
 
Devin smiled hopefully- he had not been seen. Within a few minutes he persuaded somebody to let him borrow their horse (he didn't actually have one), and rushed off behind. He hoped he could help Wilkes to achieve his goal...

(OOC: Devin will get into the scene a few minutes after Captain Anderson does- probably too late, but that's acceptable)

William put the paper down with wide eyes.

“ ‘ey George!” he yelled from across the farm house. George Levenworth came into the room followed by Billy Don Weatherford.

“Look as this boys. “ He pointed at the article detailing the bank coach coming to Whitethorn. “Whaddaya say boys? I think we need a new fence.” He said with a smirk on his face.

“Get the others and mount up.” The two ranch hands turned to leave. “Oh and Billy, grab my rifle.”
 
I have been toying with the idea of making a character for this nes for awhile. I have decided now would be a good time to join.

Name: Best
Job: Bounty Hunter

Best is called Best for good reason. Few if any can match his skill with a revolver and he is good with a rifle too. No one knows were he comes from but Best thinks it was a small town, a back water town. Best remembers the day that changed his life and in some ways destroyed it.

It was a Sunday and Best and his parents had just returned from church. A gunman stepped out from the shadows near their front door and demanded that Best's parents hand over all their saving and Best's mother goes with the gunman. When Best's farther refuses to comply and starts calling for help he was shot twice in the head. Brain and blood and bone sprayed all over Best and his mother, she screamed, the guman then shot her five times in the chest and head. Once again Best was splattered in blood but he did not cry or scream. He just stood there rocking backwards and forwards. The gunman did not have the heart to murder a nine year old boy so he shot him in the shoulder and then knocked out with his gun butt. The hot barrel made contact with Best's face leaving him with a brutal scar across his starting at his right eyebrow then cutting the top of his nose and ending just below his eye.

Best went mad for several years but by the age of 15 he began to calm down again and return to sanity, that said Best is still not completely sane and never will be, when he recovered his sanity he made a vow to track down his parents' killer and to become a bounty hunter. Ten days later the killer was dead Best then began to train ready for his first job as a bounty hunter.

Soon Best proved himself but in the early days he soon learnt that being a 'good guy' doesn't pay so he started to take any jobs which came his way and money began to roll in.

Best came to Whitethorne to set up a home and to look for jobs. As the area as a pontenial for a lot of conflict he intends to stay for at least two years.

OOC: I will need a job before I can start posting more stories. So please give me one soon.
 
Welcome Vertinari118! I wont pick jobs for your characters, you can write a story about how he gets a job or you can have him already employed, but it seems you haven't chosen yet, so write about him finding a job. There are plenty of jobs open, he could be a bounty hunter part time and work for a ranch, could be a guard at the bank, or just about anything.
 
A lone rider steered his horse towards Whitethorne from the east, about 10 miles away. He wore a black cowboy hat, with a shotgun on his back and a Derringer on his side.

The "road", it could be called, was vacant, save one other man, walking towards the rider.

"Mornin', sir," the walking man said.

The rider ignored him.

"I reckon I know you from somewhere. Where you from, stranger?"

The rider paused his horse, and turned towards the man. His face was ragged, with a short, crisp brown beard and green eyes.

The walker gasped. "You...you're the Reb cavalryman, aren't ya? The one that killed that Unionist on the border...I saw your face on them wanted posters. Err...Valentine, yeah. Robert Valentine. They gotta big reward for ya!"

The rider seemed uninterrested. "What's it mean to you?"

The walker relaxed. "Don't worry, sir. I'm a reb at heart. Watch out, there are tons of 'em Unionists around here. The carpetbaggers."

"I know. Carpetbaggers, Mexicans, Indians and scalawags, the lot of 'em."

"They should be run out of the state."

"I plan on doin' that."

The walker looked at Valentine. "Well, sir, I happen to know that some of the ranchers along these parts tend to hate the lot of 'em. They're moving in by the dozens, taking the land and pastures."

Valentine smiled. "Perfect."

The walker ginned. "Follow me, sir, and I'll lead you to a true Texan rancher, who can provide some food and a bed. He'll like you."

It should be noted that a significant number of Confederates have gotten executed due to John Gun's attempt to assasinate the Sheriff and get away with it through being drunk...
 
The Hunt

I was in the saloon when I heard the news "Valentine is coming south." I could not belive my luck. I ran to the Sherrif's office and did a quick double check that he was wanted and how. The poster said alive only, I hate having to catch live ones but I can still do it. So I began to hunt for him down all the main roads and I employed a few youths to keep an eye open as well.

I saw him and he saw me. We were 30m apart, at a guess. I drew my gun and so did he. I stopped my horse and dived and he fired two shots. I scraped across my leg and the other hit Lucky, the horse, in the chest, she fell behind me dying. He has got me angry now so I fired a shot at his gun hand, it hit and his gun when flying up into the air. I ran forwards to bag him but he punched me hard in the face. I went down and he kicked me hard in the stomach, I was sick. Valentine then rode off. I would catch him for he had made this personal.
 
Jake Reynolds- Gunsmith.

Moved to Whitethorn during the civil war with his parents. His father was killed by Indians and his mother was beaten, raped and killed by Mexicans. He practiced becoming a gunslinger, and decided he would craft his own weapons. So he took up a local job in Whitethorn being the town gunsmith.
 
As the darkness continued to creep around Anderson, Jacob groaned, he would never find Wilkes at night, he was not a good tracker. He considered giving up and heading back to the fort before he realized, he could not remember which way they left the town! Jacob gasped, he was lost, and in hostile indian territory, bandits and banditos would love to jump on a lone cavalry officer. So Jacob was not only lost, but in danger too, the only weapon he had was his Henry repeating rifle, which had a full carbine but Jacob had one more carbine left, and a .45 colt pistol with no spare ammunition. His trusty horse, named Apache, was given to him by a friend back east who knew the local Apache Chief, at least the horse was a spirited and fast but worthless if he did not know where he was going.

Jacob walked around for a bit, Apache followed like a loyal dog, Jacob knelt to study something and decided he would spend the night there. At daybreak he would attempt to head back to town. He knew his men would be trying to find him at daybreak, hopefully they would run into each other out there, before the Indians or bandits do. Jacob placed the rifle next to him and tucked the pistol into the front of his pants, he then took off his cavalrymen jacket and wrapped it up and placed his head against it, he was fast asleep within 5 minutes. Apache snorted and walked off to get some water and food nearby, always listening for signs of an approaching person.
 
OOC: Introduced a third character because Devin was too much of a straw man argument against attitudes of the time.

The Wilkes Saga
Devin sighed. He'd gotten lost. If Wilkes got killed, then Plan A would have failed. At this rate, he'd have to go back to the town, and Wilkes was on his own. This was a humiliating situation...

Wilkes rode towards the Indians, confident. He hadn't gotten lost, and didn't know that his persuers had. His actions rationalised by what Devin had told him, he was going to start a war...

David
What people involved in the Wilkes saga didn't know was that there was somebody who honestly, without rationalisation, believed what Wilkes believed. David Smith, brother of Devin Smith, was a true believer of Manifest Destiny.

David was actually fairly virteous for a Manifest Destiny believer- he wanted Western settlement, but considered that the Indians would benefit more by civilisation. He believed that the civilised nations of the world, the United States among them, had as their common duty to civilise the world- and that the U.S was not taking it's fair share.

So he was determined to do what he could- and here, he could have an impact...
 
Is it o.k if I introduce a third character? It might be seen as unfair if I have too many characters at once.
 
"What in tardination!" cried a ranch hand, "Is that WIKES starting an INDIAN WAR"

A shower of hooves and gunshots, following an excited yelp of a cavalry officer and then a cry as he was wounded in the arm. The noise carried closer to the ranch, with a distinct figure running away, firing backwards and then, he being wounded, cried ,"It's gona be a mop'p indian war! Whip'm!"

"God he didn't!" cried 'Cap', "If he starts a war I'll get more business... Lad! Show them steel and that ranch-folks ain't with maruduring indians! Huzzah!"

From another direction a more steady hoovebeat came closer: It was Valentine.


(messing arround, you can fill in the blanks spots and the fight!)
