Who-2 Keith goes to the Moon.

Glad the fix worked, SW. I actually have no idea what Failed to Initialize Renderer means, but I've heard of other people having that problem.

Bede, I think that those signs and stuff on the strategy layer disappear after you leave the game...so...yeah...

Query: are food resources cumulative bonuses or singular like luxuries? If that's the case then a settler out of Shanghai to fish the northern peninsula is important.
I believe they are like luxuries and don't accumulate. However, when we meet other civs, they are always more than happy to trade extra food resources.

You have one of any resource, any extra are just trading surplus; just like Civ3. Certain buildings double their effectiveness:
Harbour: Fish, Clam, Crabs;
Granary: Wheat, Corn, Rice;
Grocer & Supermarket do the rest; I can't remember which does which though.

well, here goes nothing.

enter.
1- beijing settler > lib. settler goes down river.

2- MYST is in. no soup for us. go for POLY and :worship: also up sci to 100 (small loss)

3- build NANJING > galley, fishing boat emerges and i try to explore some. pasture sheep near Guangdzu.

4- nada

5- POLY in. still no go. try for MONO in 4. fishboat goes back to clams.

6- clam fishery opens. cottage after pasture.
barbs arrive from the south.

7- our first galley is ready :woohoo:
shanghai wants culture, instead its ordered to build galley 2.
Guangdzu workboat > rax,
barbs arrive at the gates of shanghai. i have a lonely warrior. :worship:

8- praying pays. MONO doesNOT  go for alpha.
Beijing lib > sword.

9- nada

10- chop some in prep for a cottage, destroy a barb warrior.

alpha in 6, -5gpt, 93 in bag.

its still all very confusing, but i guess ill learn.

I take it you were trying to found a religion, soul? Next time, click on those praying hands in the top right to see which religions have already been founded. ;)

I'm not sure if we need so many galleys, either. Remember that there are NO suicide galleys anymore, so we really only need to send out one in each direction.

ahem....
will now go shamefully into the closet with the manual and RTFM.

well, i guess 3 galleys will come in handy soon, us being stranded... alone... in the dark...

i just hope the city palcement is OK.
the advisor said it was a dandy place... :D

Alpha's a good run though... we need it for Maths, then Compass, then Optics (i.e. Caravels). That's probably as good beeline as any right now

Bede all resources including food resources are now tradeable so many fishes can lead to many trades. Let's get 'em hooked.
Our roster:
Eldar-- UP
Whomp-- on deck
Pliskenator--
The Grumpy Old Monk-- looks like an old pro already.
Soul Jive -- Buildin' us a few boats. :D

Daghieboy--Will let us know when he's out of boot camp though we're all learning here....
'Lil Grasshoppah-- On injured reserve till patch

Beijing, we have a problem:
Who-2_400BC.JPG

Dem's da reason we shouldn't be sending out unescorted settlers. There weren't any units anywhere near when this guy popped up.

Obelisks are for cheap border expansion. Stick with 'em where they're being put up.

Once Beijing has its Aqueduct, start getting some swords out to go get Nanjing back from the Barbs (that Axe will be tough to shift, with its +50% vs. melee units).

Research path has been set towards Optics. Keep it that way - we don't currently need more cities, or extra resources (nobody to sell to, and we won't be able to trade 'til Astronomy).

:bump:

Whomp, you know you're up?

And how many people have upgraded to 1.09? Would it mess things up if some people don't upgrade?

I upgraded to 1.09 this morning. No mention in it that save games will fall over... but there can be no harm in everyone patching, can there?

Yep, my saves work, as well. I was mainly wondering what would happen with the new costs for different things, like some of the techs. What if someone with the patch played, and started a tech, then the other person with the patch played. Would the tech cost change?

btw, the patch fixed my leaderhead problem! I can finally see Mao's smiling face. Still got black terrain, though. :(

OK sorry everyone. Thanksgiving stuff. I have half a day today so I will hit it today.

Pre-turn: Headed to optics and build some swords.
375 -- Nanjing taken by the nasty barbs.

350 -- Aqueduct finishes in Beijing and we start a sword. Guangzhou finishes an obliesk and starts rax.

250 --Hmm...these odds aren't so swift so I wait to see if their axeman on #6 (sorry about the number pad...Holly's nephew was playing the game and I t forgot to take them off) will attack after I move that northern sword on the FP to our gold hill. We need reinforcements anyhow since we will likely lose at least 1 sword on an attack of the city so I want 3 there.

Civ4ScreenShot0021.JPG

225 The axeman attacks our sword and he is severely injured but hangs on. He gets promoted to 30% city attack. Heal him for 2 turns.
I start the Hanging Gardens in Beijing.

175 Lib finishes in whiny Shanghai and starts a rax. A chop/cottage will accelerate this.

150 -- Everyone is in place. Bang the drum! Boomboomboomboom...boomboomboomboom...AHHHH!!!! ATTACK!!!

Civ4ScreenShot0024.JPG

First swordsman loses but his valiant effort leaves this.

Civ4ScreenShot0025.JPG

The second wins and we have Nanjing back in our hands and 16g pieces.

Summary
Not sure if the Hanging Gardens are the best idea but worst case we get gold out of the deal and max out research. We're quarrying the marble so we can consider some marble wonders. Our citizens whine too much. Somehow we need to give them life's luxuries at some point. In the meantime, let them work the mines. Now I know where that saying comes from "well gotta get back to the mines". It's because they grew too fast. :D

HG is a good idea. Anything that gives extra health is good. Esp as it doesn't expire.
